Geometrical Defects in Josephson Junction Arrays
Dislocations and disclinations in a lattice of Josephson junctions will
affect the dynamics of vortex excitations within the array. These defects
effectively distort the space in which the excitations move and interact. The
interaction energy between such defects and excitations are determined and
vortex trajectories in twisted lattices are calculated. Finally, possible
experiments observing these effects are presented.Comment: 26 pages including 5 figure
Thermomechanical design criteria for ceramic-coated surfaces
Some early history of ceramic applications is presented. Finite element modeling of components to determine service and fabrication loads found inelastic behavior and residual stresses to be significant to component life. Inelastic behavior mitigates peak strains but enhances residual strains. Results of furnace, Mach 0.3 burner, and engine tests are discussed and categorized into design criteria (loading, geometry, fabrication, materials, analysis, and testing). These design rules and finite element analyses are brought to bear on two test cases: turboshaft engine seals, and rocket thrust chambers
Transition times in the Landau-Zener model
This paper presents analytic formulas for various transition times in the
Landau-Zener model. Considerable differences are found between the transition
times in the diabatic and adiabatic bases, and between the jump time (the time
for which the transition probability rises to the region of its asymptotic
value) and the relaxation time (the characteristic damping time of the
oscillations which appear in the transition probability after the crossing).
These transition times have been calculated by using the exact values of the
transition probabilities and their derivatives at the crossing point and
approximations to the time evolutions of the transition probabilities in the
diabatic basis, derived earlier \protect{[}N. V. Vitanov and B. M. Garraway,
Phys. Rev. A {\bf 53}, 4288 (1996)\protect{]}, and similar results in the

SAFEGUARDS AND NONPROLIFERATION CONSIDERATIONS RELEVANT TO FUELS REFABRICATION AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
Early in the Fuels Refabrication and Development (FRAD) program, it was recognized that safeguards and nonproliferation design criteria were needed to provide guidance to equipment, process, and facility designers. This need was highlighted by the recent attention given safeguards and proliferation. Because of this heightened concern, it was found that design criteria that adequately address safeguards and nonproliferation do not now exist. For this reason, a three-day workshop was convened to attempt to collect and organize existing information regarding design criteria. This document is a result of that undertaking and the subsequent efforts required to structure the information. In summary, it was found that domestic and international goals and objectives are reasonably well established. Goals and objectives for evaluating the proliferation resistance of a facility are less firmly defined. A listing of design criteria for domestic and international safeguards has not been compiled. This document presents a summary of considerations that must be incorporated into design criteria but stops short of developing a comprehensive list of design criteria. One is certainly needed and should be funded as a follow-on effort. Following the development of the design criteria, the next logical steps are the development of evaluation methodologies and acceptance criteria. These also were proposed as logical follow-on activities which would be needed before a major FRAD design activity could be initiated
Interaction of suppressor of cytokine signalling 3 with cavin-1 links SOCS3 function and cavin-1 stability
YesEffective suppression of JAK–STAT signalling by the inducible inhibitor “suppressor of
cytokine signalling 3” (SOCS3) is essential for limiting signalling from cytokine receptors.
Here we show that cavin-1, a component of caveolae, is a functionally significant SOCS3-
interacting protein. Biochemical and confocal imaging demonstrate that SOCS3 localisation to
the plasma membrane requires cavin-1. SOCS3 is also critical for cavin-1 stabilisation, such
that deletion of SOCS3 reduces the expression of cavin-1 and caveolin-1 proteins, thereby
reducing caveola abundance in endothelial cells. Moreover, the interaction of cavin-1 and
SOCS3 is essential for SOCS3 function, as loss of cavin-1 enhances cytokine-stimulated
STAT3 phosphorylation and abolishes SOCS3-dependent inhibition of IL-6 signalling by cyclic
AMP. Together, these findings reveal a new functionally important mechanism linking
SOCS3-mediated inhibition of cytokine signalling to localisation at the plasma membrane via

Massive skyrmions in quantum Hall ferromagnets
We apply the theory of elasticity to study the effects of skyrmion mass on
lattice dynamics in quantum Hall systems. We find that massive Skyrme lattices
behave like a Wigner crystal in the presence of a uniform perpendicular
magnetic field. We make a comparison with the microscopic Hartree-Fock results
to characterize the mass of quantum Hall skyrmions at and investigate
how the low temperature phase of Skyrme lattices may be affected by the

Characterisation and properties of a small cell lung cancer cell line and xenograft WX322 with marked sensitivity to alpha-interferon.
Controversy exists as to whether interferons usefully influence the growth of epithelial carcinomas. A small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) cell line, WX322, has been derived which is greater than 1000-fold more sensitive to alpha-interferon (IFN) when grown in agar than other reported SCLC cell lines. The WX322 line has been characterised to prove its epithelial origin and its chemosensitivity compared with that of the NCI-H69 small cell line. The WX322 cell line expresses neuroendocrine and epithelial markers and possesses a morphology consistent with SCLC origin. A concentration of 5 IU ml-1 of IFN produced 50% inhibition of colony formation in agar in the WX322 line, whereas a concentration of greater than 10(5) IU ml-1 was required to produce a comparable effect with the NCI-H69 cell line. In contrast, WX322, possessed similar sensitivity to NCI-H69 cells when exposed to a range of cytotoxic agents. Analysis of the cell cycle indicated that IFN increased the percentage of cells in the G0/G1 phase for the WX322 cell line but increased the percentage in S phase for the NCI-H69 line. Growth of the xenograft, from which the cell line was derived, was also inhibited by IFN at doses greater than 10(5) IU/mouse/day. The WX322 cell line whether grown in agar or as a xenograft shows an unusually high sensitivity to IFN and provides an interesting model for studying mechanisms of IFN cytotoxicity to epithelial cells
