Understanding designer design activity; unconscious interaction between human cognition and behaviour in everyday product / Muhammad Jameel Mohamed Kamil
Product designers were expected to apply their hermeneutic as well as reflective design thinking skills to find a fit between technology and human behaviour interaction, including the notion of experiencecentred. However, due to dynamics of changes in technology and the way users interact with products, the past several years have witnessed a growing interest and enthusiasm for designing the product which explicitly emphasise on user behaviour and interaction. Therefore, the recent studies have been paying attention to critically understand the elements of interaction between human and product used in everyday life. Unfortunately, it has been profound that there are limited discussions were presented within a single coherent perspective of designers’ design thinking related to the Unconscious Interaction between Human Cognition and Behaviour (UIHCB) in everyday product. In other words, a little intention has been devoted on how the UIHCB in everyday product can aid designers’ design activity. Thus, the purpose of this research is to understand designer design activity towards the UIHCB in everyday product. The research objective is to determine the attributes of unconscious interaction in everyday life, what are their responses towards the UIHCB in everyday product, how their reflective practice can be described, and how does the understanding of UIHCB in everyday product helps to aid designers’ capabilities in generating product design ideations. Four research questions have been formulated to get a firm answer posed in this research. The main empirical effort for this thesis involved qualitative and quantitative research in gathering and analysed implicit and explicit designer’s knowledge
Research on the design of Chaoshan intelligent tableware based on digital image processing technology
Smart tableware is a tool produced along with smart catering. It is a smart food container designed based on the Internet of Things, cloud computing and artificial intelligence technology through new technologies and information technology. Based on digital image processing technology, this paper develops and designs smart tableware, introduces the digital image calibration principle and sampling quantification method adopted by Chaoshan smart tableware, and then uses image segmentation and binarization analysis, color digital image processing and analysis technology to explore The abstract beauty of Chaoshan smart tableware. The development of this creative product not only brings convenience to our use, but also a symbol of our cultural innovation
Unconscious interaction between human cognition and behaviour in everyday product: A study of product form entities through freehand sketching using design syntactic analysis
The development, advancement and critical study of design thinking challenges designers to explore every possible factor in high value innovative design concepts. Designers must expand their thinking parameters and seek values in design activities by analyzing all related factors in human behaviour. Moreover, the need for more communicable and stringent design development strategies of the product's conceptual ideation is increasing. Based on prior studies of human behaviour factors, the theory of unconscious interaction and cognition in human behaviour has shown its value as a guide for designers to create an innovative product design concept during sketching activities. In this paper, selected conceptual sketches generated from an understanding of the theory of unconscious interaction and cognition in human behaviour will be analyzed. This study aims is to analyze form elements and entities implemented by designers using design syntactic analysis as the main methodology. The ultimate goal is to identify which elements visualized (1) the superior gestalt consisting of form entities and form elements of the highest hierarchical (global) level of the product form; (2) the characteristic shapes which indicates the purpose and function of form aesthetics and (3) a signifying curve as a form ingredient which indicates the functional component of product form. The final section will discuss the result and the significance derived from the outcomes of the study. This includes the functional identifications and analysis of form aesthetics, the consistencies and uncertainty elements, and product concept reasoning
The implementation of polycaprolactone (PCL) as an eco-friendly material in toy design development
Due to a substantial impact of hazardous materials in toy design, numerous
toy companies have opted for an eco-friendly toy by promoting a legacy
of innovation rather than waste and degradation. Furthermore, one of
the most significant polymers for being recognised as a safe toy material
is Polycaprolactone (PCL). However, in Malaysia, the study of Malaysian
parent’s level of awareness in buying eco-friendly toys, their behaviour in
purchasing and managing toys at home, as well as the preferences of play
type for their children, is not widely discussed. Thus, forty (40) Malaysian
parents have participated in an online survey conducted by the research
team. The result of the study found that most Malaysian parents has a low
level of awareness in buying eco-friendly toys for their children, lack the
skills needed in handling broken or unused toys, and have selected criteria
to be considered when purchasing a toy. Furthermore, a set of semiworking toy design was successfully developed using PCL as a proposal for
potential future development and production. It is hoped that the outcome
of this study will contribute to inspire future toy designers to account for
Malaysian parent’s preferences when developing eco-friendly toys
The Value of Unconscious Human Behavior in Product Design Innovation
This paper evaluates a new perimeter of design thinking with respect to the value of unconscious human behavior, as well as the direction for the development of innovative product design. The paper reviews the literature on the value of unconscious human behavior in the design perspective. Freud’s theory of mind and Bargh’s model of the unconscious behavioral guidance system are being reviewed. Furthermore, four attributions of unconscious everyday human behaviors, which contribute in design concepts and ideation, are also being explored along with the model of obvious needs and latent needs in everyday life, which educate a designer about how unconscious human behavior could indicate user’s implicit need
Assessing Designers’ Perception, Analysis, and Reflective Using Verbal Protocol Analysis
This paper examines designers’ response toward the theory of uncon- scious interaction and cognitive of human behavior in the everyday product. During the Verbal Protocol Analysis (VPA) study, 30 designers were given four selected images which have been categorized into four attributes of unconscious interaction in everyday human behavior. At the same time, they were asked to verbally respond to following aspects: (1) their perception toward the attributes of the unconscious interaction of human behavior in everyday life; (2) their analysis on the given images; and (3) their reflection of those given images. The contribution of the study led to the identification of designers’ abilities to perceive, understand, analyze, and reflect in enhancing the value of an existing product by interpreting the design needs from the four attributes of unconscious interaction in everyday human behavior

Assessing the Attributes of Unconscious Interaction Between Human Cognition and Behavior in Everyday Product Using Image-Based Research Analysis
This paper’s objective is to critically assess the attributes of unconscious interaction between human cognition and behavior in the everyday product. During the study, a total of 30 images has been captured through natural observation. Using image-based research analysis as an approach, each image was critically assessed based on Burri’s theoretical framework of visual dimensions analysis. Nevertheless, a set of evaluation scheme was distributed to 30 Malaysian designers to obtain the reliability of the image analysis. The findings of the study indicate a significant descriptive characteristics analysis contained within different dimensions, which led to the identification of the attributes of unconscious interaction between human cognition and behavior in the everyday product. The implication of this study will help designers to widen their gaze on the possibilities of identifying user’s need during design thinking process by looking at the realms of unconsciousness and embodies human interaction

The Investigation of Designers’ Reflective Practice Activity Using Verbal Protocol Analysis
This paper intends to investigate the cognitive process of designers’ sketching activity based on their understanding towards the value of unconscious interaction and cognitive of human behavior in the everyday products. Using Verbal Protocol Analysis (VPA) as the main approach, four Malaysian designers from different levels of expertise worked on product design tasks in relation to four attributes of unconscious interaction in everyday human behavior. The VPA data were coded and analyzed based on Schon’s theoretical framework of reflective practice. At the end of the study, the descriptive analysis of each designers’ design activity was presented based on Andreasen’s level of abstraction. The result of the study illustrates remarkable strategies differences in the patterns of designer’s reflective practice during the conceptual design process. The implications of this study clarify the significance of these approaches in gaining insights into designers' reflective practice activity
