    Single-carrier frequency domain equalization using subband decomposition for optical wireless communications

    Optical wireless communication is intended to be applied into indoor and visual distance high-rate data transmission, which is complementary to radio frequency communications. There are specific problems and requirements in optical wireless communications compared with radio frequency communications. Single-carrier frequency domain equalization (SCFDE) is a transmission scheme which has been considered as an alternative of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM), because it has most of the advantages of OFDM and avoids the problems of OFDM. Subband decomposition is a multi-resolution signal analysis and synthesis method, using quadrature mirror filter (QMF) bank to convert time-domain signal to frequency-domain subbands. As a time-to-frequency transform, subband decomposition technique can be employed to frequency domain equalization. Compared with the commonly used discrete Fourier transform (DFT), subband transform is more flexible and efficient to compensate the fading of frequency-selective channels. This thesis includes the theories of SCFDE, subband decomposition, subband equalization, and optical wireless transmission scheme. Also, simulations are given to demonstrate the processing of signals and the implementation of equalizers. The results show that the transmitted signal can be effectively equalized to compensate the channel fading, and the transmission scheme is appropriate for optical wireless communications

    This is one of a series of papers exploring the stability speed of one-dimensional stochastic processes. The present paper emphasizes on the principal eigenvalues of elliptic operators. The eigenvalue is just the best constant in the L2L^{2}-Poincar\'e inequality and describes the decay rate of the corresponding diffusion process. We present some variational formulas for the mixed principal eigenvalues of the operators. As applications of these formulas, we obtain case by case explicit estimates, a criterion for positivity, and an approximating procedure for the eigenvalue.Comment: 45 pages; Front. Math. China, 201

    Benefits and Costs of Restriction: A Comparison of Unrestricted, Restricted Gift Card Spending and Cash Spending

    Archival data of unrestricted and restricted gift card transactions was compared with national level consumer spending data from both the U.S. and Canada to investigate the similarities and differences in purchase pattern. The objective for this comparison was to investigate the motivational power of unrestricted gift card compared to cash rewards, restricted gift card and other hedonic tangible incentive. Through results interpretation, the data supported the hypotheses that people perceive and use unrestricted gift card as a cash carrying medium rather than a tangible reward. A restricted gift card that is hedonic by design constrains its recipients to hedonic purchase and removes the guilt and eliminates the justification process. The results also suggested that the elimination of justification seems to be associated to not only the hedonic dimension of goods/services but also transaction size

    Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) Aided Multi-User Networks: Interplay Between NOMA and RIS

    This article focuses on the exploitation of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) in multi-user networks employing orthogonal multiple access (OMA) or non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), with an emphasis on investigating the interplay between NOMA and RIS. Depending on whether the RIS reflection coefficients can be adjusted only once or multiple times during one transmission, we distinguish between static and dynamic RIS configurations. In particular, the capacity region of RIS aided single-antenna NOMA networks is characterized and compared with the OMA rate region from an information-theoretic perspective, revealing that the dynamic RIS configuration is capacity-achieving. Then, the impact of the RIS deployment location on the performance of different multiple access schemes is investigated, which reveals that asymmetric and symmetric deployment strategies are preferable for NOMA and OMA, respectively. Furthermore, for RIS aided multiple-antenna NOMA networks, three novel joint active and passive beamformer designs are proposed based on both beamformer based and cluster based strategies.     Direct Observation of Quadrupolar Strain Fields forming a Shear Band in Metallic Glasses

    For decades, scanning/transmission electron microscopy (S/TEM) techniques have been employed to analyze shear bands in metallic glasses and understand their formation in order to improve the mechanical properties of metallic glasses. However, due to a lack of direct information in reciprocal space, conventional S/TEM cannot characterize the local strain and atomic structure of amorphous materials, which are key to describe the deformation of glasses. For this work, 4-dimensional-STEM (4D-STEM) is applied to map and directly correlate the local strain and the atomic structure at the nanometer scale in deformed metallic glasses. Residual strain fields are observed with quadrupolar symmetry concentrated at dilated Eshelby inclusions. The strain fields percolate in a vortex-like manner building up the shear band. This provides a new understanding of the formation of shear bands in metallic glass
