The impact of sex ratio and economic status on local birth rates

Human mating and reproductive behaviour can vary depending on various mechanisms, including the local sex ratio. Previous research shows that as sex ratios become female-biased, women from economically deprived areas are less likely to delay reproductive opportunities to wait for a high-investing mate but instead begin their reproductive careers sooner. Here, we show that the local sex ratio also has an impact on female fertility schedules. At young ages, a female-biased ratio is associated with higher birth rates in the poorest areas, whereas the opposite is true for the richest areas. At older ages, a female-biased ratio is associated with higher birth rates in the richest, but not the poorest areas. These patterns suggest that female–female competition encourages poorer women to adopt a fast life-history strategy and give birth early, and richer women to adopt a slow life-history strategy and delay reproduction

Strategic Doing Leading Complex Collaborations

Amidst spikes in violence, lead poisoning and a collapsing economy, teams of committed civic leaders and residents have been rebuilding their neighborhoods in new ways. Oddly, the spark began with a failed grant proposal. Using Strategic Doing, a discipline incubated at Purdue, residents are now designing and guiding their own complex collaborations to confront wildly wicked problems. This session will introduce you to Strategic Doing and how a unique partnership between Purdue and Michigan State has opened new pathways for the residents of Flint. Strategic Doing teaches us how to form complex collaborations quickly, keep them on track toward measurable outcomes and make adjustments as we learn by doing. A mainstream function of NTAS is to serve as a quasi-trade show for collegiate and flight academy providers, updating them each year on the latest in equipment and training support; often focusing on time-critical support; as we did most recently on ADS-B Out implementation in 2015. Panelists are asked to present new aircraft features & capabilities, progress on ADS-B update for both new and retrofit application from NTAS 2015, new & novel equipment and administrative applications, and training support for ADS-B in academic, tablet, computer, and simulation delivery
