Figuring out the untranslatable: traces of Twombly

The intertwining of languages, such as writing and visual expression, can enrich our understanding of the translation process and also its limits and obscure areas – the untranslatable. Visual art can therefore become a fruitful resource for an inquiry into translation. Accordingly, an artist like Cy Twombly, one of the most literary visual artists, can provide clues about the enigmas of translation or at least attempt to uncover them in the form of images. Twombly includes words and phrases in his paintings with various degrees of legibility from a great diversity of writers, along with spots and scribbles that are not part of any code. All of this reveals a way of evoking texts and stories covering a wide range of different cultural groups although predominantly classic. The poet Octavio Paz recognized in Twombly the attributes of a “universal translator”. It is also this path that we will explore and put to test in Twombly’s work but just to a certain extent, in which the search for universality becomes a myth, impossibility, or incomprehension. As Ricoeur says in his study on translation “we know that no universal language can be able to reconstruct its undefined diversity” (Ricouer 2005, 45). Twombly’s poetic dimension is probably not universal from the point of view of a perfect language but through the vagueness of the writing in his paintings, which leaves room for imagination and challenges the translation process. “Poetry, and not just poetry, but nature - seasons, vegetation - all of this is transformed, translated into image” (Paz 1995, 182).info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Analysis of the Auction and Continuous Intraday Electricity Markets of the MIBEL

The scope of this work is to analyse the continuous intraday market in the Iberian Electricity Market, from its beginning in June 2018 until the end of 2020, covering energy prices, volume of energy traded, clearing agents and the influence of the different generation technologies for energy production. The results of this analysis are then compared with the results of both the day-ahead and the auction intraday markets

Conceptual progression hypothesis study about asexual reproduction and germination in plant reproduction

This work aims the understanding of how the conceptual progression on plants reproduction presents itself to the primary school students. Was made a exploratory study (Arnal et al., 2001) to select three students for the instrumental case study (Stake, 2000) and performed in-depth interviews (Arksey & Knight, 1999). From the conceptions collected was builted an Progression Hypothesis presented according to nineteen categories and three levels of conceptualisation. Dissertação de mest., Gestão e Desenvolvimento de Destino Turísticos, Faculdade de Economia, Univ. do Algarve, 2013O presente Relatório de Atividade Profissional, elaborado com vista à obtenção do grau de Mestre em Gestão e Desenvolvimento de Destinos Turísticos pela Faculdade de Economia da Universidade do Algarve, está dividido em dois grandes eixos. O primeiro eixo, diz respeito ao tema selecionado para desenvolvimento e discussão nas provas. Optei por desenvolver um tema relacionado com o setor de cruzeiros, por ser a área de atuação que nos últimos anos tem vindo a ganhar cada vez maior importância na minha atividade profissional e por considerar que Portimão e o Algarve têm muito a ganhar com o desenvolvimento deste sector na região. Este tema, cujo título é Porto de Portimão – Análise das Oportunidades de Crescimento, tem por objetivo analisar as oportunidades de crescimento do Porto de Portimão face ao contexto nacional e internacional do setor de cruzeiros, concretizando o primeiro eixo ao longo de 4 capítulos. O primeiro é a introdução, seguido do enquadramento da indústria de cruzeiros, no qual se contextualiza a oferta e a procura, quer em termos internacionais, quer em termos nacionais. A análise às oportunidades de crescimento, no qual se analisa as tendências de crescimento do setor e oportunidades para o Porto de Portimão, incluindo necessidades de investimento, é o terceiro capítulo. O quarto capítulo é a conclusão. O segundo eixo, refere-se à descrição detalhada do Curriculum Vitae, no qual comprovo a experiência e a minha atividade profissional. O Curriculum Vitae está organizado em seis elementos, nomeadamente percurso académico; atividade profissional; publicações e comunicações em palestras e seminários; prémios ou distinções recebidas; participação ou representações, em associações internacionais e nacionais; outras competências, ao nível vi do domínio de línguas e cultura geral; e discussão crítica da evolução da sua experiência profissional. Link between viral infection and autoimmunity in primary Sjögren’s syndrome: clues from lymphocytic profile and ebv antibodies

RESUMO: A Síndrome de Sjögren primária (pSS) é uma doença sistémica autoimune caracterizada pela presença de infiltrados linfocitários nas glândulas exócrinas, predominantemente nas glândulas salivares e lacrimais. Ocorre principalmente em mulheres, onde os rácios de incidência feminino/masculino estão entre 10:1 e 20:1. Mulheres com mais de 50 anos de idade são mais afetadas. Os sintomas principais desta condição são: xerostomia (boca seca), keratoconjuctivitis sicca (secura dos olhos com inflamação), e secura de outras superfícies mucosas (pele, vagina e epitélio do aparelho respiratório). Vários vírus têm sido associados à pSS. O vírus Epstein-Barr (EBV) tem sido um forte candidato para o despoletar da epitelite autoimune presente na pSS. No entanto, não existe um causador viral estabelecido da epitelite autoimune em pSS. O presente estudo demonstrou um perfil linfocítico que indica hiperatividade da célula B, limitação da célula Breg e alterações na célula T, nomeadamente nas células T circulantes que possuem um fenótipo caracteristicamente folicular. Estas alterações podem apontar para a existência de um agente viral subjacente causador de uma resposta imune desregulada, uma vez que alterações semelhantes estão presentes num contexto de infeção viral. De facto, pacientes com pSS apresentam uma percentagem aumentada de soros positivos de IgG anti-EBV EA-D, que poderá apontar para o envolvimento do EBV na pSS. Assim, é necessário mais trabalho para estabelecer um causador viral em pSS. Para acrescentar a este estudo, mais anticorpos para antivirais podem ser avaliados, nomeadamente, anti-citomegalovirus, anti-vírus T linfotrópico humano, antihepatite C entre outros. Chamamos a atenção para as células T foliculares para uma possível ligação entre infeção viral e pSS. Estudos adicionais com modelos animais podem ser cruciais na compreensão do papel destas células em ambos os contextos e identificação de mecanismos e padrões de diferenciação similares e a falha dos mecanismos de tolerância.ABSTRACT: Primary Sjögren’s Syndrome (pSS) is a chronic systemic autoimmune disease characterized by lymphocytic infiltration of the exocrine glands, predominantly the salivary and lachrymal glands, leading to damage and secretory impairment. It occurs mainly in women, with ratios of incidence female/male are between 10:1 and 20:1. Women over 50 years of age are the most affected. The main symptoms of this condition are xerostomia (dry mouth), keratoconjunctivitis sicca (ocular dryness with corneal damage), and dryness of other mucosal surfaces (skin, vagina and respiratory epithelium). Extraglandular manifestations frequently occur, especially inflammatory articular and cutaneous manifestations, as well as less common and more serious involvement such as neuropathy, nephritis, vasculitis or lymphoma. Several viruses have been associated with pSS. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has been a strong candidate for the triggering of autoimmune epithelitis occurring in pSS. There isn’t, however, an established viral trigger for SS autoimmune epithelitis. Our study revealed a lymphocytic profile indicating B cell hyperactivity, Breg impairment and T cell alterations, namely in circulating T cells with follicular-like phenotype. These changes can be attributed to an underlying viral agent triggering an unregulated response. Indeed, pSS patients presented a higher percentage of positive serum for anti-EBV EA-D IgG, which might point towards a role of EBV in pSS. Still, more work is required to establish a definite viral trigger for pSS. Adding to this study, more antiviral Abs can be assessed, namely, against CMV, human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV), HCV and others. We call the attention towards follicular T cell subsets for a possible link between viral infection and pSS. More studies using animal models can be paramount in the understanding of follicular T cells roles in both contexts and identify similar mechanisms and differentiation patterns and a breakdown of tolerance mechanisms
