    Get PDF
Communities of a riverside neighbourhood are essential in developing rivers into a sustainable environmental feature. However, their lack of awareness towards flooding and river pollution interferes with the river's sustainability. The disconnection with nature impairs sustainability; consequently, the river's value degrades. The awareness can be improved upon by focusing on riverside neighbourhoods. The residents would have some level of awareness due to living sustainably with the river environment. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the living experiences of a riverside neighbourhood's residents from a social perspective. Data were obtained through semi-structured questionnaires given to 121 residents, a focus group discussion and personal interviews. The questionnaires' responses were exported and analysed using Principal Component Analysis in SPSS to identify significant components that were pertinent to the aim. Six components were found and were clarified into three themes: 'river issues', 'river management' and 'river neighbourhood as a shared environment'. It has been found that exposure to river issues resulted in the residents exercising their resources to overcome those issues, and the cooperation between the residents and the stakeholder was essential in maintaining and achieving a sustainable river environment. The residents' connection with their neighbourhood was exemplified through their familiarity and neighbourliness. In conclusion, insight into the residents' experiences would provide a better understanding of river neighbourhoods, which stakeholders could consider in decision-making and planning to ensure the connection with nature is sustained

    Get PDF
Prawirotaman is an urban village called kampung that has changed into a tourist village since the 1980s. Tourism development has evoked changes in social spaces and the community. There has been a phenomenon of territorial deprivation leading to the privatization of space. Hence, this research used a qualitative approach to identify how the privatization of space influenced the forming of social spaces within the kampung. Data were collected through observation and interviews to understand the transformation of social space and residents’ social activities changes. These methods were conducted in the afternoon or after Asr prayer until before Maghrib prayer, focusing on transition areas. Next, the analysis used behaviour mapping assisted by ArcGIS to show the nodes of residents' social activities and visual-spatial analysis to understand the transformation of social spaces. This research resulted that the space privatization impacted the forming of kampung social spaces that were influenced by 1) residents' daily movement, 2) connectivity and openness of the transition area, 3) gathering habits, and 4) availability of social space in the transition area. The space privatization did not reduce residents' opportunities for social activities; nevertheless, it stimulated residents to form their social spaces continuously. The research found the important factors that form social space in the urban village. The finding also contributed to sustaining the urban villages, particularly those that have transformed into tourist villages

The block policy caused by COVID-19 has made public life researchers cannot conduct their studies. However, in recent years, fewer public life studies have proposed new tools to reduce human job involved in data collection process. Hence, this article has proposed a new way to collect public life studies data: watching TikTok live streaming. This research aims to test the reliability of this new data collection method by comparing the contents of Hutong residents' public lives from field research and TikTok live streaming. The researcher conducted an ethnographic investigation in Hutong. In the field research process, the researcher used observation to collect data and recorded it by taking photos and taking notes. While watching TikTok, the researcher selected four anchors who often conduct live streaming in Hutongs to watch and recorded the data by taking screenshots. Data from two different collection methods was analyzed by thematic analysis separately. Results show that the data obtained by watching TikTok live streaming is more comprehensive than that obtained by field research; besides, using TikTok to collect data can sufficiently reduce the input of human jobs. The researcher thought the social function of TikTok may provide more help for data collection. Hence this study advised future research to test the reliability of conducting interviews using TikTok
