The current study aimed to determine the flow changes when the uses of weir hydraulic structure in an open channel hydraulic system. An experiment was conducted by using an open channel structure at the Hydrology System Station, Micro-pollutant Research Centre (MPRC), Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM). Two (2) different types of sharp-crested weir structures which are semi-circular and triangular weir are analyzed. The experiment is conducted at same initial flow rate which is 0.270m3/s for both types of weirs. All the data required in analysis of flow characteristic such that yo, y1, y2, y3, H and Q for upstream and downstream of weirs structure was recorded. The main objective was to evaluate the flow water surface profile and energy grade line downstream of weir using Hydraulic Model (HEC-RAS). Analysis of data was conducted for physically measured and using HEC-RAS model. The results revealed that the flow at downstream had lower Fr of 0.150 compared to upstream when uses of weirs. The relationship between downstream velocity and upstream flow shows the higher the upstream flow rate, the lower the downstream velocity. HEC-RAS result shows that the upstream energy grade elevation had higher percentage difference of 24.4% from physical analysis for semi-circle weir. HEC-RAS was an effective instrument for analyzing of flow behavior in open channel and capable in evaluating the flow characteristics changes when the uses of hydraulic structure in open channel

The study of floodplain is significant to human life and social economy. It can be seen that by using most computer models, locations of structures affected by floodwaters, such as bridges and roads cannot be effectively compared to the floodplain location in stream floodplain analysis. The purpose of this study is to develop an output of Hydrologic Engineering Center’s River Analysis System (HEC-RAS) hydraulic model and to enable one dimensional steady flow analysis. This study is applied to Sembrong river catchment area, located in Batu Pahat. Floodplain data features such as length of streams, bank position, streamline and cross-sections were used to produce river flow and its cross-sectional shape for each station along the study area. Total of 7 flow rate values were used to indicate an increase in the water level in order to accommodate the additional amount of water that flow into river. The results show that water will overflow into the floodplain at maximum flow rate of 24 m3 /s. The hydraulic model had indicated that 33 out of 65 stations were unable to accommodate the maximum flow rate and thus will led to flooding. By developing the hydraulic model, it clearly shows that the results are more reliable and the affected area can be easily identified. The developed flood model can be a very useful tool in flood management of Sembrong river in terms of river development planning, flood mitigation measures, flood evacuation planning and addressing public awareness. This study proved that HEC-RAS is one of effective instrument for analysis and modeling

Activated carbon is widely used in industrial wastewater treatment operation because of the effectiveness in removing the dye. As the conventional activated carbon on market nowadays is expensive, lots of research was done on agricultural materials to replace the activated carbon. Sugarcane bagasse is listed as one of the agricultural material alternatives. This review compiles the characterisation of sugarcane bagasse and several agricultural wastes-based activated carbon including proximate analysis, ultimate analysis, and activated carbon surface characteristic used to remove dye in textile wastewater. Nevertheless, the adsorption parameters are the main focus as it affecting the removal of dye. The expansion review regarding activated carbon performance implies that dye removal efficiency depends on the amount of adsorbent dosage, contact time, pH solution, dye concentration applied during the adsorption process. This review shows the need of thoughtful information on adsorption parameters with an expanded list of various types of agricultural-based activated carbon and various dye removal

Excessive release of textile wastewater with heavy metals into environment has posed a great problem to the natural water system. The efficiency of the adsorption process to remove heavy metals depend on the adsorbent. The commercial activated carbon is one of the most efficient adsorbent, but the limitation lies in the high cost. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the efficiency of sugarcane bagasse activated carbon modified by phosphoric acid as adsorbent for the removal of zinc (Zn) and Ferum (Fe) from the textile wastewater. The adsorption process was conducted using batch method as a function for pH (2-7), contact time (30 min to 24 h) and adsorbent dosage (0.6 to 6g). The final concentrations of the metal ions were determined by ICP-MS. The results revealed that the adsorption efficiency increased with the contact time, the optimum time was recorded after 2 h. The removal percentage of Zn and Fe associated with the adsorbent dosage due to the greater surface area with optimum value of 4.0 g. The increasing of pH from 2 to 6 correlated with high adsorption efficiency, with the optimum condition at pH 5. The maximum percentage removal of Fe, Zn was 80%. These findings indicated that the SBAC is an attractive alternative adsorbent material for the metal ions removal in textile wastewater

Floods are the most frequent type of natural disaster and occur when heavy precipitation for days or even weeks. Floods will cause extensive destruction, resulting in loss of life and disruption to personal property and vital infrastructure for public health. In this study, HEC-RAS model was used to identify the flood prone area and to determine cross section at floodplain area along the stream network. The study was conducted in the area Muar, Johor. The methodology involved collection of parameters such as length of stream, lateral & elevation of coordinates, streamline and flow data to perform a hydraulic simulation. Different value of flowrate had been used by using the manning equation to estimate the drainage or channel capability to manage the flowrate. The number of station for each cross section need to locate in order to simulate the cross section along the river or channel. Meanwhile, the result outcome will show the cross section for each station. From the result, the analysis of the cross section include with the affected area of floodplain was identified. According to the hydraulic model generated by HEC-RAS software, 7 of 20 stations found will be flood for the 10 years return period since they were unable to accommodate the water flow. By doing this research, the flood model will be developed and HEC-RAS software is one of the tool that can analyse and model for the floodplain area. In a meantime, the government can control and give an early warning about the flood incident

Abstract At present, research on forecasting unpredictable weather such as heavy rainfall is one of the most important challenges for equipped meteorological center. In addition, the incidence of significant weather events is estimated to rise in the near future due to climate change, and this situation inspires more studies to be done. This study introduces a rainfall model that has been developed using selected rainfall parameters with the aim to recognize rainfall depth in a catchment area. This study proposes a rainfall model that utilizes the amount of rainfall, temperature, humidity and pressure records taken from selected stations in Peninsular Malaysia and they are analyzed using SPSS multiple regression model. Seven meteorological stations are selected for data collection from 1997 until 2007 in Peninsular Malaysia which are Senai, Kuantan, Melaka, Subang, Ipoh, Bayan Lepas, and Chuping. Multiple Regression analysis in Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) software has been used to analyze a set of eleven years (1997 – 2007) meteorological data. Senai rainfall model gives an accurate result compared to observation rainfall data and this model were validating with data from Kota Tinggi station. The analysis shows that the selected meteorological parameters influence the rainfall development. As a result, the rainfall model developed for Senai proves that it can be used in Kota Tinggi catchment area within the limit boundaries, as the two stations are close from one another. Then, the amounts of rainfall at the Senai and Kota Tinggi stations are compared and the calibration analysis shows that the proposed rainfall model can be used in both areas.&nbsp

A Review on the Causes, Effects and Mitigation of Climate Changes on the Environmental Aspects

Abstract Climate change is often used interchangeably with the term global warming but, it is a much broader term which includes global warming and some other climate changes that are observed on our planet over the last few decades. In recent time climate change impacts are being felt, the average global temperature is on the rise every decade since the 1970s. Sea ice and glaciers are disappearing, rising sea levels, species are becoming extinct, droughts that render landscape more susceptible to wildfires, changing seasons and severe weather events are becoming more common. These are problems primarily caused by the emission of greenhouse gases into the environment that results to rise in global temperature. There seems to be a consensus among scientist, researchers and all other stakeholders that climate change is already happening and primarily caused by human activities, a few disagree with this view and attribute climate change as a natural phenomenon. The objective of this paper is to (i) introduce climate change in our world today, (ii) enumerate significant causes of climate change in our environment, as well as the effects (iii), suggest ways the impact of climate change due to GHG emissions and other contributors can be mitigated
