Stability and control of the Gossamer human powered aircraft by analysis and flight test
The slow flight speed, very light wing loading, and neutral stability of the Gossamer Condor and the Gossamer Albatross emphasized apparent-mass aerodynamic effects and unusual modes of motion response. These are analyzed, approximated, and discussed, and the resulting transfer functions and dynamic properties are summarized and compared. To verify these analytical models, flight tests were conducted with and electrically powered Gossamer Albatross II. Sensors were installed and their outputs were telemetered to records on the ground. Frequency sweeps of the various controls were made and the data were reduced to frequency domain measures. Results are given for the response of: pitch rate, airspeed and normal acceleration from canard-elevator deflection; roll rate and yaw rate from canard-rudder tilt; and roll rate and yaw rate from wing warp. The reliable data are compared with the analytical predictions

Active Object Localization in Visual Situations
We describe a method for performing active localization of objects in
instances of visual situations. A visual situation is an abstract
concept---e.g., "a boxing match", "a birthday party", "walking the dog",
"waiting for a bus"---whose image instantiations are linked more by their
common spatial and semantic structure than by low-level visual similarity. Our
system combines given and learned knowledge of the structure of a particular
situation, and adapts that knowledge to a new situation instance as it actively
searches for objects. More specifically, the system learns a set of probability
distributions describing spatial and other relationships among relevant
objects. The system uses those distributions to iteratively sample object
proposals on a test image, but also continually uses information from those
object proposals to adaptively modify the distributions based on what the
system has detected. We test our approach's ability to efficiently localize
objects, using a situation-specific image dataset created by our group. We
compare the results with several baselines and variations on our method, and
demonstrate the strong benefit of using situation knowledge and active
context-driven localization. Finally, we contrast our method with several other
approaches that use context as well as active search for object localization in

The1997 Scottish referendum : an analysis of the Scottish referendum
Referendums are rare events in the United Kingdom. Only one UK-wide referendum has been held - on membership of the European Community (as it then was) in 1975 - and before 1997 there had been only three other significant referendums: in 1973, in Northern Ireland, on the constitutional position of the province, and in 1979, in Scotland and Wales, on proposals for devolution. Thus the scarcity of cases available for study in itself makes the 1997 referendum on a Scottish parliament worthy of close attention. In addition, however, the fact that Scottish voters were asked to vote on, not one, but two questions - whether or not they were in favour of a Scottish parliament and whether such a parliament should have tax-varying powers - made the Scottish referendum unique among the (admittedly few) referendums that have been held in Britain
Archetypal analysis of galaxy spectra
Archetypal analysis represents each individual member of a set of data
vectors as a mixture (a constrained linear combination) of the pure types or
archetypes of the data set. The archetypes are themselves required to be
mixtures of the data vectors. Archetypal analysis may be particularly useful in
analysing data sets comprising galaxy spectra, since each spectrum is,
presumably, a superposition of the emission from the various stellar
populations, nebular emissions and nuclear activity making up that galaxy, and
each of these emission sources corresponds to a potential archetype of the
entire data set. We demonstrate archetypal analysis using sets of composite
synthetic galaxy spectra, showing that the method promises to be an effective
and efficient way to classify spectra. We show that archetypal analysis is

Potential for measuring the longitudinal and lateral profile of muons in TeV air showers with IACTs
Muons are copiously produced within hadronic extensive air showers (EAS)
occurring in the Earth's atmosphere, and are used by particle air shower
detectors as a means of identifying the primary cosmic ray which initiated the
EAS. Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs), designed for the
detection of gamma-ray initiated EAS for the purposes of Very High Energy (VHE)
gamma-ray astronomy, are subject to a considerable background signal due to
hadronic EAS. Although hadronic EAS are typically rejected for gamma-ray
analysis purposes, single muons produced within such showers generate clearly
identifiable signals in IACTs and muon images are routinely retained and used
for calibration purposes. For IACT arrays operating with a stereoscopic
trigger, when a muon triggers one telescope, other telescopes in IACT arrays
usually detect the associated hadronic EAS. We demonstrate for the first time
the potential of IACT arrays for competitive measurements of the muon content
of air showers, their lateral distribution and longitudinal profile of
production slant heights in the TeV energy range. Such information can provide
