    SMEs and BIM in preparation for 2016: a case study.

    The UK Government has mandated the use of Level 2 Building Information Modelling (BIM) on all publicly funded projects above Ă‚ÂŁ5 million by 2016. As a major construction client, the government would hope to see the widespread adoption of BIM throughout the industry as the requirements disseminate through the supply chain. The drive towards this target has been accompanied by much publicised advances in the information technology associated with BIM but while many larger firms in the construction industry are well advanced in their plans to implement the government plans, a large proportion of SMEs are not so well prepared for the deadline. The National Federation of Builders (2012) found that 81% of SMEs have either no familiarity or a vague familiarity with the levels of BIM. Findings such as this have led to fears of an emerging two tier industry. This study aims to determine the extent of readiness of SMEs to meet the requirements using a live case study, and examines the barriers that such firms working in this environment may encounter. The case study emphasises the benefits of the adoption of a collaborative mindset, underpinned by IT tools, which is the concept behind the government definition of BIM. However, research has shown that significant barriers still exist among SMEs to the adoption of BIM and this has been borne out by findings in this case study, though potential solutions to some of the issues are suggested

    An Analysis of the Statewide Shortage of ABA Professionals in New York

    Support services for many Autistic students in schools is critical. Behavior analysts are one type of service provider who offer support services in and outside of school settings to Autistic students. As behavioral support services are increasing in educational settings, it is important to ensure there are a sufficient number of professionals trained to provide high quality and compassionate support. However, there may not be enough state licensed providers to meet the growing need of students across the state of New York (NY). The supply of state licensed behavior analysts (LBAs) was calculated for the state of NY, its six regions, and its 62 individual counties to assess the shortage of providers. County level public data were used to compare the per capita supply of LBAs using caseload guidelines. The supply of LBAs did not meet the supply benchmark at the aggregate level or in any of the state’s six regions. Only four of the state\u27s 62 counties met the LBA supply benchmark. Shortages of service providers limit accessibility to support services and high caseloads can impact service quality. Suggestions for changes that may increase accessibility to behavior analytic supports and services in NY to those seeking services are discussed

    The CIV-MgII Kinematics Connection in <z>~0.7 Galaxies

    We have examined Faint Object Spectrograph data from the Hubble Space Telescope Archive for CIV 1548,1550 absorption associated with 40 MgII 2796,2803 absorption-selected galaxies at 0.4 < z < 1.4. We report a strong correlation between MgII kinematics, measured in 6 km/s resolution HIRES/Keck spectra, and W_r(1548); this implies a physical connection between the processes that produce "outlying velocity" MgII clouds and high ionization galactic/halo gas. We found no trend in ionization condition, W_r(1548)/W_r(2796), with galaxy-QSO line-of-sight separation for 13 systems with confirmed associated galaxies, suggesting no obvious ionization gradient with galactocentric distance in these higher redshift galaxies. We find tentative evidence (2-sigma) that W_r(1548)/W_r(2796) is anti-correlated with galaxy color; if further data corroborate this trend, in view of the strong CIV-MgII kinematics correlation, it could imply a connection between stellar populations, star formation episodes, and the kinematics and ionization conditions of halo gas at z~1.Comment: Accepted to Astrophysical Journal Letters; 4 pages; 3 figures; emulateapj.st

    Motivational factors influencing farming practices in northern Ghana

    Socio-economic factors that influence the adoption of management practices and technologies by farmers have received wide attention in the adoption literature, but the effects of socio-psychological farmer features such as perceptions and motivations have been analysed to a lesser extent. Using farm household survey data from three regions in northern Ghana, this study explores farmers’ motivations and perceived adoption impediments for three sustainable intensification practices (SIPs): improved maize varieties, cropping system strategies, and combined SIPs (i.e. improved maize and cropping system strategies), and the effect of motivational factors on decisions to adopt SIPs. First, explorative factor analysis (EFA) was used in identifying factors of motivations and impediments for adoption of SIPs. Then, a multinomial logit model was used to analyze the effect of socio-economic farm characteristics and motivational factors on farmers’ decisions to adopt SIPs. EFA identified three motivational factors: personal satisfaction, eco-diversity and eco-efficiency, which differed in importance between the three regions. Across these regions, higher scores for aspects of personal satisfaction were associated with lower interest in improved maize varieties compared to cropping system strategies, while the opposite was true for eco-efficiency which was related to a stronger preference for improved maize varieties. Uncertainty, absence of social support, and resource constraints were identified as impediment factors. The logit model demonstrated that extension services seemed to support the use of improved maize varieties more than the implementation of cropping system strategies. We conclude that motivational factors significantly influence farmer adoption decisions regarding sustainable intensification practices and should be considered systematically in combination with socio-economic farm features and external drivers to inform on-farm innovation processes and supporting policies.</p

    Disc formation in turbulent massive cores: Circumventing the magnetic braking catastrophe

    We present collapse simulations of 100 M_{\sun}, turbulent cloud cores threaded by a strong magnetic field. During the initial collapse phase filaments are generated which fragment quickly and form several protostars. Around these protostars Keplerian discs with typical sizes of up to 100 AU build up in contrast to previous simulations neglecting turbulence. We examine three mechanisms potentially responsible for lowering the magnetic braking efficiency and therefore allowing for the formation of Keplerian discs. Analysing the condensations in which the discs form, we show that the build-up of Keplerian discs is neither caused by magnetic flux loss due to turbulent reconnection nor by the misalignment of the magnetic field and the angular momentum. It is rather a consequence of the turbulent surroundings of the disc which exhibit no coherent rotation structure while strong local shear flows carry large amounts of angular momentum. We suggest that the "magnetic braking catastrophe", i.e. the formation of sub-Keplerian discs only, is an artefact of the idealised non-turbulent initial conditions and that turbulence provides a natural mechanism to circumvent this problem.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted by MNRAS Letters, updated to final versio
