Modelling Li+ Ion Battery Electrode Properties
We formulated two detailed models for an electrolytic cell with particulate electrodes based on a lithium atom concentration dependent Butler-Volmer condition at the interface between electrode particles and the electrolyte. The first was based on a dilute-ion assumption for the electrolyte, while the second assumed that Li ions are present in excess.
For the first, we used the method of multiple scales to homogenize this model over the microstructure, formed by the small lithium particles in the electrodes.
For the second, we gave rigorous bounds for the effective electrochemical conductivity for a linearized case.
We expect similar results and bounds for the "full nonlinear problem" because variational results are generally not adversely affected by a sinh term.
Finally we used the asymptotic methods, based on parameters estimated from the literature, to attain a greatly simplified one-dimensional version of the original homogenized model. This simplified model accounts for the fact that diffusion of lithium atoms within individual electrode particles is relatively much faster than that of lithium ions across the whole cell so that lithium ion diffusion is what limits the performance of the battery. However, since most of the potential drop occurs across the Debye layers surrounding each electrode particle, lithium ion diffusion only significantly affects cell performance if there is more or less complete depletion of lithium ions in some region of the electrolyte which causes a break in the current flowing across the cell. This causes catastrophic failure. Providing such failure does not occur the potential drop across the cell is determined by the concentration of lithium atoms in the electrode particles. Within each electrode lithium atom concentration is, to leading order, a function of time only and not of position within the electrode. The depletion of electrode lithium atom concentration is directly proportional to the current being drawn off the cell. This leads one to expect that the potential of the cell gradually drops as current is drawn of it.
We would like to emphasize that all the homogenization methods employed in this work give a systematic approach for investigating the effect that changes in the microstructure have on the behaviour of the battery. However, due to lack of time, we have not used this method to investigate particular particle geometries
A cross-cultural comparison of the link between modernization, anthropomorphism and attitude to wildlife
Anthropogenic pressure has significantly increased in the last decades, often enhancing conflicts at the humanndash;wildlife interface. Therefore, understanding peoplesrsquo; value orientations, attitudes and behavioural intentions towards wildlife is a crucial endeavour to reduce the occurrence of conflicts between humans and wildlife. Previous research in the USA has shown a consistent link between modernization and increased anthropomorphism (i.e., the tendency to attribute human mental or physical characteristics to other entities), leading to positive changes in value orientations, attitudes, and behavioural intentions towards wildlife. In this paper, we aimed to address whether this link is also present in other cultures, by testing participants (N = 741) in five different countries (Brazil, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, and Spain). Our study shows that while the positive link between anthropomorphism, positive attitudes and behavioural intentions towards wildlife is universal, the link between modernization and anthropomorphism is culturally mediated. In some countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Spain), modernization increased anthropomorphism, while in others modernization predicted no differences (Brazil) or even a decrease in anthropomorphism (Mexico), ultimately deteriorating individualsrsquo; attitude and behavioural intentions towards wildlife. These results call for caution when generalizing findings from western industrialized countries to inform conservation policies worldwide
CONIKS: Bringing Key Transparency to End Users
We present CONIKS, an end-user key verification service capable of integration in end-to-end encrypted communication systems. CONIKS builds on transparency log proposals for web server certificates but solves several new challenges specific to key verification for end users. CONIKS obviates the need for global third-party monitors and enables users to efficiently monitor their own key bindings for consistency, downloading less than 20 kB per day to do so even for a provider with billions of users. CONIKS users and providers can collectively audit providers for non-equivocation, and this requires downloading a constant 2.5 kB per provider per day. Additionally, CONIKS preserves the level of privacy offered by today’s major communication services, hiding the list of usernames present and even allowing providers to conceal the total number of users in the system
In vitro plant regeneration system for common bean ( Phaseolus vulgaris ): effect of N6-benzylaminopurine and adenine sulphate
A method for regeneration of the commercially important common bean (
Phaseolus vulgaris ) using N6-benzylaminopurine(BAP) and adenine
sulphate (AS) was established. Embryogenic axes of the Costa Rican
common bean cultivars Bribr\ued, Brunca, Guaym\ued, Huetar and
Telire were cultured on Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with
100 mgl-1 myo-inositol, 1 mgl-1 thiamine, 30 gl-1 sucrose, BAP (0, 5
and 10 mgl-1), AS (0, 20 and 40 mgl-1) and 8 gl-1 agar. Regardless of
the concentration of BAP and AS in the induction medium, the number of
shoots and leaves differed significantly among the common bean
cultivars evaluated. The higher average of shoots was obtained for
Brunca > Telire > Bribr\ued > Guaym\ued > Huetar.
Moreover, independently of the cultivar, the induction medium
supplemented with 5 mgl-1 BAP and 20 or 40 mgl-1 AS resulted in the
higher average of shoots formation. Culture of Bribr\ued, Brunca,
Guaym\ued, Huetar and Telire embryogenic axes on induction medium
supplemented with different BAP and AS resulted in a differential
response. Successful acclimatization of common bean in vitro plants
were achieved in the greenhouse, and plants appeared morphologically
normal. The regeneration system developed in this investigation for
this important crop could be a useful tool for the genetic modification
through mutagenesis or genetic transformation
Jambrina Gomez, A.; Barrachina Celda, TM.; Miró Herrero, R.; Verdú Martín, GJ.; Concejal, A.; Melara, J. (2012).
