The purpose of this literature review was to
evaluate if it should be avoided to keep the cow
and calf together after birth because of the risk of
transmission of infectious pathogens from the cow to
the preweaning calf. The sources of transmission of
common infections in newborn calves are described.
E.coli, rotavirus, bovine coronavirus, Clostridium spp.,
Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia and Eimeria spp. are
ubiquitous, and infected calves can excrete extreme
numbers of microorganisms and cause contamination
of the environment. According to the literature, microorganisms in the environment represent a higher risk
than adults for transmission to the newborn, and hygienic
measures and good passive immune status of the
newborn are important prophylaxes. Transplacental
transmission of bovine virus diarrhea virus may cause
persistently infected individuals, which represent the
most important route of viral shedding. Mycoplasma
bovis usually cause infection in newborn calves with
the pathogen often transmitted from the environment.
The importance of the cow for direct transmission to
the calf is dubious. Resent research has demonstrated
that Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis
can be spread by bio-aerosols, and that intrauterine
infection is quite common. Some authors suggest that
separation of the dam and calf might be less effective
in preventing the spread of this infection than previously
anticipated. The authors’ conclusion is that cows
in Norway do not represent a greater risk of transmission
of pathogens to the newborn calf than the other
calves and young animals in the herd
Gi kalven mer melk!
Calf rearing in organic dairy production
Organic farmers utilize a wide variety of practices for suckling and separation of cows and calves, and experiences vary. This constitutes an important resource for finding and testing management practices that may improve animal
welfare and diminish stress at separation. Farmers’ increased awareness of their animals’ behaviours may
provide improvements in welfare and production in the years to come
Improving welfare for dairy cows and calves at separation.
The results indicate that both the intensity and extent of the behavioural reaction to separation is alleviated when cow and calf are separated with physical contact. In dairy herds practicing suckling systems, fence-line separation may increase cow and calf welfare compared to separation into pens allowing merely auditory contact
Velferd hos storfe
Sudden exposure to warm water causes Instant behavioural responses indicative of nociception or pain in Atlantic salmon
Thermal treatment has become the most used delousing method in salmonid aquaculture. However, concerns have been raised about it being painful for the fish. We studied the behavioural response of Atlantic salmon acclimated to 8°C when transferred to temperatures in the range 0–38°C. Exposure time was 5 min or until they reached the endpoint of losing equilibrium and laying on their side, a sign of imminent death. At temperatures below 28°C, none of the fish reached endpoint within the 5-min maximum. At 28°C four of five fish reached endpoint, and fish reached endpoint more rapidly as temperature increased further. Fish transferred to temperatures above 28°C had higher swimming speed immediately after transfer and maintained a high swimming speed until just before loss of equilibrium. Their behaviour was from the start characterised by collisions into tank walls and head shaking. Just before loss of equilibrium they started breaking the surface of the water, swimming in a circle pattern and in some instances displayed a side-wise bending of their body. In other words, salmon transferred to temperatures above 28°C showed instant behavioural responses indicative of nociception or pain.publishedVersio
Welfare Criteria in Reindeer Husbandry
The aim of this project was to identify different factors that might affect welfare of reindeer and that could be implemented in the production systems, on pasture, in fences, at the slaughterhouse, through product marking and future quality systems.
In later years there has been an increased focus on animal health and welfare in reindeer production. Negative focus has been enhanced by media with reports of low carcass weights, especially in Finnmark, and with reduced meat quality and bad reputation for the reindeer industry as a result. Animal stress during handling has in addition to this, been shown to give negative effects on meat quality and shelf life. Using simple and practical welfare indicators, the welfare of other production animals in agriculture have been systematically evaluated. If a similar system for the assessment of reindeer welfare could be developed, it would contribute to a economic and cultural sustainable industry. Food chains, processers and consumers demand large carcasses of good quality. With a documentation of good animal welfare throughout the value chain, the marketing of reindeer products would be improved and markets could also expand.
Animal welfare could be defined as “the individual’s subjective experience of its mental and physical condition as regards its attempt to cope with its environment”. Welfare indicator will thus be a selection of simple, easy to measure factors or conditions of the animal and/or the production environment. The challenge was here to suggest correct factors that also were practically adjusted to the animal species and the needs of the reindeer industry. A good welfare indicator will tell a lot about the animals welfare, it is easy to measure and is measured the same by different observers. Welfare indicators can be measured on the animal itself (animal based indicators) and its living environment (resource based indicators). Production parameters (carcass weights and –composition) may be included, but with careful interpretation. Good production results and nice carcasses are not a guarantee for good animal welfare per se, while low calving percentage, small and skinny carcasses definitively may indicate deficiencies in the animal environment.
Modern reindeer production involves many benefits regarding animal welfare compared to animal production in agriculture. The reindeer are allowed to range free on pastures all year round where they can utilize nature resources, without the limiting factors of a barn environment and its limitations on instincts and natural behaviour. Norwegian reindeer are also relatively healthy and have few infectious diseases in the current population.
Based on other standardized forms with checkboxes developed for agriculture, the researchers in the present project have suggested a selection of questions that may be used for self-control and documentation of good management in the reindeer herd throughout the year. These questions are not comprehensive but meant as a first draft. Other checkpoints and questions might be more relevant for other local conditions and needs. A review of the flock twice a year can reveal both strengths and weaknesses of own management and motivate for improvements where most needed. If questions are formulated correctly, they may also raise awareness on rules and regulations and function as advice on how flock management could be optimized. Such documentation may in turn be used as a tool when applying for subsidies or preventive measures from the government administration. Slaughter houses may also use the documentation as criteria for good quality and give extra price for meat that is suited for distribution as fresh produce
FARMERS TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR HERD HEALTH DEVELOPMENT – STABLE SCHOOLS AS A TOOL FOR DAIRY HEALTH AND WELFARE PLANNING IN EUROPE
Achieving and maintaining a high herd health and welfare status is an important aim in organic livestock farming. The different conditions between countries call for models that are relevant for different farming types that can be integrated into local practice. In stable schools, farmers take responsibility for health and welfare planning by identifying issues, setting goals and acting to improve the health situation based on farm-specific data e.g. milk production. This paper reviews the results from intervention studies that used the FFS approach for animal health and welfare planning, providing an overview of on-going activities and their implementation into advisory situations in selected European countries.
Research studies with stable schools as an intervention tool showed improvements regarding the specific project aim on the majority of the participating farms. Farmers and facilitators were convinced of the approach and benefits for dairy herds. Farmers’ attitude and attention towards theirs herds and their ownership of the process appear to be crucial success factors for herd health and welfare situations. In some European countries this method has been implemented in advisory practice and in other regions there are promising opportunities
