    Game Assessment For Miltary Application

    The primary purpose of conducting this research was to establish game assessment guidelines and characteristics for integrating elected characteristics of games into ongoing instructional approaches. The cost of repurposing commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) games could offer a considerably lower cost alternative than the cost of creating a new instructional game developed for a specific instructional goal. The McNeese Game Assessment Tool (MGAT), created for the assessment of games in this usability study, is currently in a beta stage and was found to have potential for future game assessment. The overall assessment indicated that the tool was effective in analyzing game products for reuse potential and that the five instruments that make up the tool did meet the purpose of the design. However, the study also indicated that the instruments needed recommended modifications and further testing with a larger population group before the tool could be utilized. The assessment process identified in this study was a step forward in the area of game and simulation integration research. This study indicated that more research is needed in the area of instructional design to enhance instructional integration goals for future game, simulation and training applications

    Utilization and Documentation of Hospital Admission Depression Screening: A Quality Improvement Project

    Background: Connections between inflammation and the brain appear to be driving the development of depression in modern times. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is inherently a chronic inflammatory illness, and evidence supports a bidirectional relationship between CVD and depressive disorders. Depression is a mental health condition that is commonly comorbid in individuals with CVD, exacerbates other chronic diseases, and negatively affects health outcomes. Individuals with CVD are at a higher risk of experiencing depressive symptoms and developing depressive disorders than members of the public. Clinicians are not aware of the high levels of comorbidity between CVD and depression. Early detection of depressive symptoms can lead to better management, improving patient care and outcomes. Though the prevalence of depressive symptoms is higher in individuals with CVD, the signs and symptoms of depression are frequently overlooked and undocumented by clinicians, upon hospital admission and throughout hospital stays for individuals with cardiovascular events. Objective: The primary objective of the QI project was to assess the impact of an educational presentation focused on the comorbidity of depression and CVD, patient benefits of depressive symptom documentation, and the SIG-E-CAPS mnemonic on clinician knowledge, attitude, and behaviors regarding the subjects. Methods: Utilizing a pretest/posttest design, clinician knowledge levels, attitudes regarding and behaviors surrounding depression assessment upon admission for CVD were ascertained. Pretest responses were used in an educational session, then post session test responses were compared. Conclusion: Educational presentations containing evidence-based information about the links between depression and CVD as well as the benefits of depression screening and documentation to patient health increases the knowledge and attitudes of clinicians in a cardiac unit. The educational presentation also has positive impacts on the overall behaviors of clinicians and the likelihood of clinicians listening carefully for depressive symptoms expressed by patients and screening for depression upon admission. The results of the QI project can be used in further studies to justify the need for depression screening protocols upon admission of CVD patients

    The role of visual fields stimulus type, and type of mask upon facial recognition

    Two experiments were conducted to investigate time based hemispheric processing in a recognition task. In Exp. 1, 32 right handed subjects were tachistoscopially presented upright and inverted faces in the left or right visual field followed by either a gray or letter mask. In Exp. 2, 32 right handed subjects were tachistoacopically presented whole and half faces in the left or right visual field followed by either a gray or letter mask. Both experiments obtained a significant stimulus type by type of mask interaction. For Exp. 1, the mean number of correct responses for upright stimuli was greater following the gray mask than following the letter mask, whereas for inverted stimuli there is almost no difference between masks. For Exp. 2, the mean number of correct responses for whole faces was greater following the gray mask than following the letter mask, whereas for half face stimuli there was almost no difference between masks. No significant visual field differences were obtained in either experiment. It is concluded that whole upright faces are better recognized by configurational processes which take time to develop. When this time is disrupted by the use of a letter mask, as compared with a gray mask, performance decreases. In contrast, inverted or half faces are better recognized by piecemeal feature detection which does not require as much time a1 configurational processing. There is no difference in performance when processing time is disrupted by the letter or gray mask

    Selective Sharing is Caring: Toward the Design of a Collaborative Tool to Facilitate Team Sharing

    Temporary teams are commonly limited by the amount of experience with their new teammates, leading to poor understanding and coordination. Collaborative tools can promote teammate team mental models (e.g., teammate attitudes, tendencies, and preferences) by sharing personal information between teammates during team formation. The current study utilizes 89 participants engaging in real-world temporary teams to better understand user perceptions of sharing personal information. Qualitative and quantitative results revealed unique findings including: 1) Users perceived personality and conflict management style assessments to be accurate and sharing these assessments to be helpful, but had mixed perceptions regarding the appropriateness of sharing; 2) Users of the collaborative tool had higher perceptions of sharing in terms of helpfulness and appropriateness; and 3) User feedback highlighted the need for tools to selectively share less data with more context to improve appropriateness and helpfulness while reducing the amount of time to read
