Towards an Autopoietic Social Systems Theory of Leadership
Despite a long history of theoretical and operational study, there remains considerable debate around what leadership actually is. In this paper, I propose through a series of steps that leadership may be considered as an autopoietic social system (after the work of Nikolas Luhmann (Luhmann 2013)) that alternates its existence with the organisation system, with the transition between them taking place at junctures triggered by the grand uncertainty presented in the form of the ‘wicked problem’. This theoretical approach to the nature of leadership is demonstrated to accommodate existing theoretical approaches to leadership from across the range of schools of thought on the topic, and to create a framework for perceiving leadership as a transient state independent of individual leaders
PPC: an algorithm for accurate estimation of SNP allele frequencies in small equimolar pools of DNA using data from high density microarrays
Robust estimation of allele frequencies in pools of DNA has the potential to reduce genotyping costs and/or increase the number of individuals contributing to a study where hundreds of thousands of genetic markers need to be genotyped in very large populations sample sets, such as genome wide association studies. In order to make accurate allele frequency estimations from pooled samples a correction for unequal allele representation must be applied. We have developed the polynomial based probe specific correction (PPC) which is a novel correction algorithm for accurate estimation of allele frequencies in data from high-density microarrays. This algorithm was validated through comparison of allele frequencies from a set of 10 individually genotyped DNA's and frequencies estimated from pools of these 10 DNAs using GeneChip 10K Mapping Xba 131 arrays. Our results demonstrate that when using the PPC to correct for allelic biases the accuracy of the allele frequency estimates increases dramatically
Informing the personalisation of interventions for parents of children with conduct problems: a qualitative study
Background: Parenting programmes aim to alleviate behavioural problems in children, including conduct disorder. This study was part of a multi-phase mixed-methods project seeking to extend the reach of parenting programmes for the treatment of conduct problems through developing an evidence base to inform a personalised approach. It explored the narratives of parents of children with behavioural and conduct problems about parenting programmes to identify how such programmes could be personalised in order to extend their reach to parents and children who do not currently benefit.
Methods: Face-to-face semi-structured interviews with a purposive sample of 42 parents, who had different experiences of parenting programmes. Interviews were conversational and informed by a topic guide. Analysis of transcripts of audio-recorded interviews drew on inductive thematic approaches and was framed largely within a phenomenological perspective.
Results: Parents’ accounts demonstrated three themes: 1) a personalised approach needs to include the child; 2) a supportive school matters; and, 3) the programme needs to feel personal. Parents were more likely to have a positive experience at a parenting programme, and for their child to demonstrate positive behavioural changes, when they felt their concerns were validated within the group and they also felt supported by the child’s teachers. Parents whose children had been assessed prior to undertaking the programme were also more likely to perceive the programme to be beneficial, compared to parents who felt their child’s individual issues were never considered.
Conclusions: Our findings point to the potential for personalised approaches to extend the reach of parenting programmes to parents and children who do not currently benefit from such programmes. Important in personalising parenting programmes is assessing children before parents are referred, to directly work with children as well as parents, and to work collaboratively with parents and children to identify which families are most suited to group support or one-to-one support and how this may change depending on circumstances
Seasonal Expression of the Picocyanobacterial Phosphonate Transporter Gene phnD in the Sargasso Sea
In phosphorus-limited marine environments, picocyanobacteria (Synechococcus and Prochlorococcus spp.) can hydrolyze naturally occurring phosphonates as a P source. Utilization of 2-aminoethylphosphonate (2-AEP) is dependent on expression of the phn genes, encoding functions required for uptake, and C–P bond cleavage. Prior work has indicated that expression of picocyanobacterial phnD, encoding the phosphonate binding protein of the phosphonate ABC transporter, is a proxy for the assimilation of phosphonates in natural assemblages of Synechococcus spp. and Prochlorococcus spp (Ilikchyan et al., 2009). In this study, we expand this work to assess seasonal phnD expression in the Sargasso Sea. By RT-PCR, our data confirm that phnD expression is constitutive for the Prochlorococcus spp. detected, but in Synechococcus spp. phnD transcription follows patterns of phosphorus availability in the mixed layer. Specifically, our data suggest that phnD is repressed in the spring when P is bioavailable following deep winter mixing. In the fall, phnD expression follows a depth-dependent pattern reflecting depleted P at the surface following summertime drawdown, and elevated P at depth
The physical fitness profiles of specialist policing teams
Aim: To profile the fitness of two groups of Australian Specialist Police.Design: Retrospective Cohort StudyMethod: De-identified data of 17 male specialist police officers from two specialist police response groups (Riot Squad (RS) and Police Tactical Group (PTG)) were provided. Data included demographics (age, height, and weight), strength (1 Repetition Maximum (1RM) bench press, deadlift, pull-up + Body Weight (BW), and squat), speed (0-10m acceleration & 10-20m peak velocity), agility (box agility drill), aerobic capacity (30-15 Intermittent Fitness Test) and power (bench throw and countermovement jump).Results: There were no significant differences in demographics, although officers from RS were, on average, older (1.45yrs, p=0.390), shorter (-2.04cm, p=0.15), and lighter (-3.43kg, p=0.55) than PTG officers. PTG officers had significantly greater strength (1RM deadlift = 38.50kg, p= 0.001, 95% CI [17.62-59.38], 1RM squat = 34.00kg, p< 0.001, 95% CI [16.6-51.5], 1RM bench press = 26.83kg, p=0.004, 95% CI [9.8-43.8]) andquicker acceleration (0.11sec, p=0.032, 95% CI [0.01-0.21]) than RS officers. Both groups performed at a level comparable to elite athletes for most other measures.Conclusion: Specialist police possess high levels of aerobic fitness, strength, acceleration, and power, with subtle differences between units, thought to be due to varying occupational roles. This study provides benchmarks for selection, return-to-work practices and maintenance programs for health professionals working within these units
Student fears of oral presentations and public speaking in higher education: A qualitative survey
Oral presentations and public speaking are an important aspect of the student experience in the United Kingdom higher education. Many modules (self-contained units normally within a programme of study) use presentations as a form of assessment and require students to verbally engage in small and large group settings to enhance learning. Previous research evidence has indicated that many students experience fear in public speaking. The aims of this qualitative survey were two-fold. First, it sought to gather further insight into the fears experienced and strategies used by students who fear public speaking, including oral presentations. The second objective was to determine whether their fear affected their experience of higher education. A qualitative survey comprising four open-ended questions was completed by 46 undergraduate and postgraduate students with a fear of public speaking from the University of the West of England (UWE), Bristol. All participants were attending one of the Stand Up and Be Heard (SUBH) UWE library-based workshops for fear of public speaking. Thematic analysis was used to identify the following six themes, namely: fear of being judged, physical symptoms, uncertainty about the topic, negative effect on university experience, practice and preparation, and more practical support needed. The results of this survey identify the specific fears students have in public speaking and provide evidence of the overall negative effect on their higher education experience. This survey provides further evidence that higher education institutions should acknowledge public speaking fear among some students and provide more support in oral presentation assessments
Evaluation of approaches for identifying population informative markers from high density SNP Chips
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Genetic markers can be used to identify and verify the origin of individuals. Motivation for the inference of ancestry ranges from conservation genetics to forensic analysis. High density assays featuring Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) markers can be exploited to create a reduced panel containing the most informative markers for these purposes. The objectives of this study were to evaluate methods of marker selection and determine the minimum number of markers from the BovineSNP50 BeadChip required to verify the origin of individuals in European cattle breeds. Delta, Wright's F<sub>ST</sub>, Weir & Cockerham's F<sub>ST </sub>and PCA methods for population differentiation were compared. The level of informativeness of each SNP was estimated from the breed specific allele frequencies. Individual assignment analysis was performed using the ranked informative markers. Stringency levels were applied by log-likelihood ratio to assess the confidence of the assignment test.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A 95% assignment success rate for the 384 individually genotyped animals was achieved with < 80, < 100, < 140 and < 200 SNP markers (with increasing stringency threshold levels) across all the examined methods for marker selection. No further gain in power of assignment was achieved by sampling in excess of 200 SNP markers. The marker selection method that required the lowest number of SNP markers to verify the animal's breed origin was Wright's F<sub>ST </sub>(60 to 140 SNPs depending on the chosen degree of confidence). Certain breeds required fewer markers (< 100) to achieve 100% assignment success. In contrast, closely related breeds require more markers (~200) to achieve > 95% assignment success. The power of assignment success, and therefore the number of SNP markers required, is dependent on the levels of genetic heterogeneity and pool of samples considered.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>While all SNP selection methods produced marker panels capable of breed identification, the power of assignment varied markedly among analysis methods. Thus, with effective exploration of available high density genetic markers, a diagnostic panel of highly informative markers can be produced.</p
The Early Optical Afterglow of GRB 030418 and Progenitor Mass Loss
The ROTSE-IIIa telescope and the SSO 40 inch (1.0 m) telescope, both located at Siding Spring Observatory, imaged the early-time afterglow of GRB 030418. In this report, we present observations of the early afterglow, first detected by the ROTSE-IIIa telescope 211 s after the start of the burst and only 76 s after the end of the gamma-ray activity. We detect optical emission that rises for ∼600 s, slowly varies around R = 17.3 mag for ∼1400 s, and then fades as a power law of index α = -1.36. Additionally, the ROTSE-IIIb telescope, located at McDonald Observatory, imaged the early-time afterglow of GRB 030723. The behavior of this light curve was qualitatively similar to that of GRB 030418, but 2 mag dimmer. These two afterglows are dissimilar to other afterglows such as GRB 990123 and GRB 021211. We investigate whether or not the early afterglow can be attributed to a synchrotron break in a cooling synchrotron spectrum as it passes through the optical band, but we find that this model is unable to accurately describe the early light curve. We present a simple model for gamma-ray burst emission emerging from a wind medium surrounding a massive progenitor star. This model provides an effective description of the data and suggests that the rise of the afterglow can be ascribed to extinction in the local circumburst environment. In this interpretation, these events provide further evidence of the connection between gamma-ray bursts and the collapse of massive stars.This work has been supported by NASA grants NAG5-

Home self-administration of intravenous antibiotics as part of an outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy service: a qualitative study of the perspectives of patients who do not self-administer
Objectives: This study aimed to use a theoretical approach to understand the determinants of behaviour in patients not home self-administering intravenous antibiotics. Setting: Outpatient care: included patients were attending an outpatient clinic for intravenous antibiotic administration in the northeast of Scotland. Participants: Patients were included if they had received more than 7 days of intravenous antibiotics and were aged 16 years and over. Twenty potential participants were approached, and all agreed to be interviewed. 13 were male with a mean age of 54 years (SD +17.6). Outcomes: Key behavioural determinants that influenced patients’ behaviours relating to self-administration of intravenous antibiotics. Design: Qualitative, semistructured in-depth interviews were undertaken with a purposive sample of patients. An interview schedule, underpinned by the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF), was developed, reviewed for credibility and piloted. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Data were analysed thematically using the TDF as the coding framework. Results: The key behavioural determinants emerging as encouraging patients to self-administer intravenous antibiotics were the perceptions of being sufficiently knowledgeable, skilful and competent and that self-administration afforded the potential to work while administering treatment. The key determinants that impacted their decision not to self-administer were lack of knowledge of available options, a perception that hospital staff are better trained and anxieties of potential complications. Conclusion: Though patients are appreciative of the skills and knowledge of hospital staff, there is also a willingness among patients to home self-administer antibiotics. However, the main barrier emerges to be a perceived lack of knowledge of ways of doing this at home. To overcome this, a number of interventions are suggested based on evidence-based behavioural change techniques
Data integration in eHealth: a domain/disease specific roadmap
The paper documents a series of data integration workshops held in 2006 at the UK National e-Science Centre, summarizing a range of the problem/solution scenarios in multi-site and multi-scale data integration with six HealthGrid projects using schizophrenia as a domain-specific test case. It outlines emerging strategies, recommendations and objectives for collaboration on shared ontology-building and harmonization of data for multi-site trials in this domain
