    A correlational study examining the relationship between invented spelling and beginning reading

    This research study was designed to investigate correlations between invented spelling patterns and beginning reading for low-performing and on-level boys and girls in kindergarten. Two research questions were examined: (1) Is there a statistically significant relationship between invented spelling as displayed in task and reading skills as measured by DIBELS? and (2) Does the performance displayed in task and reading skills as measured by DIBELS differ significantly for boys and girls in kindergarten? Student performance data was gathered using extant school Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) benchmarks at collected at midyear of kindergarten. It was hypothesized that kindergarten students who scored below DIBELS benchmark at midyear would not perform as well as kindergarten students who scored on or above DIBELS benchmark at midyear on the invented/temporary spelling and reading tasks. It was further hypothesized that gender would not significantly affect task and beginning reading performance as measured by DIBELS for the kindergarten students in this study. Data revealed on-level kindergarten participants performed significantly better than low-performing kindergarten participants on the invented/temporary spelling and word-learning tasks. However, there was very little or no statistical correlation between performance among male and female participants on the temporary spelling tasks and the word-learning tasks

    Evaluating a Method to Estimate Mediation Effects With Discrete-Time Survival Outcomes

    The utility of evaluating mediation effects spans across research domains. The model facilitates investigation of underlying mechanisms of event timing and, as such, has the potential to help strengthen etiological research and inform intervention work that incorporates the evaluation of mediating variables. In order for the analyses to be maximally useful however, it is critical to employ methodology appropriate for the data under investigation. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate a regression-based approach to estimating mediation effects with discrete-time survival outcomes. We empirically evaluate the performance of the discrete-time survival mediation model in a statistical simulation study, and demonstrate that results are functionally equivalent to estimates garnered from a potential-outcomes framework. Simulation results indicate that parameter estimates of mediation in the model were statistically accurate and precise across the range of examined conditions. Type 1 error rates were also tolerable in the conditions studied. Adequate power to detect effects in the model, with binary X and continuous M variables, required effect sizes of the mediation paths to be medium or large. Possible extensions of the model are also considered

    A computational reconstruction of Papio phylogeny using Alu insertion polymorphisms

    © 2018 The Author(s). Background: Since the completion of the human genome project, the diversity of genome sequencing data produced for non-human primates has increased exponentially. Papio baboons are well-established biological models for studying human biology and evolution. Despite substantial interest in the evolution of Papio, the systematics of these species has been widely debated, and the evolutionary history of Papio diversity is not fully understood. Alu elements are primate-specific transposable elements with a well-documented mutation/insertion mechanism and the capacity for resolving controversial phylogenetic relationships. In this study, we conducted a whole genome analysis of Alu insertion polymorphisms unique to the Papio lineage. To complete these analyses, we created a computational algorithm to identify novel Alu insertions in next-generation sequencing data. Results: We identified 187,379 Alu insertions present in the Papio lineage, yet absent from M. mulatta [Mmul8.0.1]. These elements were characterized using genomic data sequenced from a panel of twelve Papio baboons: two from each of the six extant Papio species. These data were used to construct a whole genome Alu-based phylogeny of Papio baboons. The resulting cladogram fully-resolved relationships within Papio. Conclusions: These data represent the most comprehensive Alu-based phylogenetic reconstruction reported to date. In addition, this study produces the first fully resolved Alu-based phylogeny of Papio baboons
