    Simulating accelerated atoms coupled to a quantum field

    We show an analogy between static quantum emitters coupled to a single mode of a quantum field and accelerated Unruh-DeWitt detectors. We envision a way to simulate a variety of relativistic quantum field settings beyond the reach of current computational power, such as high number of qubits coupled to a quantum field following arbitrary non-inertial trajectories.     Suppression of collisional shifts in a strongly interacting lattice clock

    Optical lattice clocks have the potential for extremely high frequency stability owing to the simultaneous interrogation of many atoms, but this precision may come at the cost of systematic inaccuracy due to atomic interactions. Density-dependent frequency shifts can occur even in a clock that uses fermionic atoms if they are subject to inhomogeneous optical excitation [1, 2]. Here we present a seemingly paradoxical solution to this problem. By dramatically increasing the strength of atomic interactions, we suppress collisional shifts in lattice sites containing NN > 1 atoms; strong interactions introduce an energy splitting into the system, and evolution into a many-particle state in which collisions occur is inhibited. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach with the JILA Sr lattice clock by reducing both the collisional frequency shift and its uncertainty by more than a factor of ten [3], to the level of 10−1710^{-17}. This result eliminates the compromise between precision and accuracy in a many-particle system, since both will continue to improve as the particle number increases.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure

    Realizing Exactly Solvable SU(N) Magnets with Thermal Atoms

    We show that nn thermal fermionic alkaline-earth atoms in a flat-bottom trap allow one to robustly implement a spin model displaying two symmetries: the SnS_n symmetry that permutes atoms occupying different vibrational levels of the trap and the SU(NN) symmetry associated with NN nuclear spin states. The high symmetry makes the model exactly solvable, which, in turn, enables the analytic study of dynamical processes such as spin diffusion in this SU(NN) system. We also show how to use this system to generate entangled states that allow for Heisenberg-limited metrology. This highly symmetric spin model should be experimentally realizable even when the vibrational levels are occupied according to a high-temperature thermal or an arbitrary non-thermal distribution.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures (including supplemental materials

    Stochastic Aggregation: Scaling Properties

    We study scaling properties of stochastic aggregation processes in one dimension. Numerical simulations for both diffusive and ballistic transport show that the mass distribution is characterized by two independent nontrivial exponents corresponding to the survival probability of particles and monomers. The overall behavior agrees qualitatively with the mean-field theory. This theory also provides a useful approximation for the decay exponents, as well as the limiting mass distribution.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure

    An Analysis of Resting-State Functional Transcranial Doppler Recordings from Middle Cerebral Arteries

    Functional transcrannial Doppler (fTCD) is used for monitoring the hemodynamics characteristics of major cerebral arteries. Its resting-state characteristics are known only when considering the maximal velocity corresponding to the highest Doppler shift (so called the envelope signals). Significantly more information about the resting-state fTCD can be gained when considering the raw cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) recordings. In this paper, we considered simultaneously acquired envelope and raw CBFV signals. Specifically, we collected bilateral CBFV recordings from left and right middle cerebral arteries using 20 healthy subjects (10 females). The data collection lasted for 15 minutes. The subjects were asked to remain awake, stay silent, and try to remain thought-free during the data collection. Time, frequency and time-frequency features were extracted from both the raw and the envelope CBFV signals. The effects of age, sex and body-mass index were examined on the extracted features. The results showed that the raw CBFV signals had a higher frequency content, and its temporal structures were almost uncorrelated. The information-theoretic features showed that the raw recordings from left and right middle cerebral arteries had higher content of mutual information than the envelope signals. Age and body-mass index did not have statistically significant effects on the extracted features. Sex-based differences were observed in all three domains and for both, the envelope signals and the raw CBFV signals. These findings indicate that the raw CBFV signals provide valuable information about the cerebral blood flow which can be utilized in further validation of fTCD as a clinical tool. © 2013 Sejdić et al
