    Crescimento individual de Heleobia piscium em populações naturais (Gastropoda: Cochliopidae) da Reserva Natural de usos múltiplos Ilha Martín García, Buenos Aires, Argentina

    The present work analyses the individual growth of Heleobia piscium in natural conditions in coastal drainage channels of the Multiple Use Natural Reserve Isla Martín García, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Isla Martín García is located in the Upper Río de la Plata, to the south of the mouth of the Uruguay river (34deg; 11′ 25″ S and 58° 15′ 38″ W). Monthly collections were made from July 2005 to July 2006 in the eastern part of the island (Arena Beach). The population of H. piscium showed a complex and dynamic structure of sizes during a long period of the annual cycle. Two cohorts could be detected. The Bertalanffy growth equation was: Lt = 6 (1-e -1.85 (t+0.38)) and Lt = 3.9 (1-e -0.19 (t+4.84)) for cohorts 1 and 2, respectively. The pattern of population growth displayed a staggered model, where the greatest growth is observed during the summer. The reproductive period occurred during six months, from the beginning of summer to middle of fall. Based on only one reproductive effort, this pattern is not similar to that of other cogeneric species already studied.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse

Martín García Island is located in the Upper Río de La Plata, to the south of the mouth of the Uruguay River (34° 11' 25 S and 58° 15'38 W). Monthly collections were made from August 2005 to December 2006. The size frequency of the U. concentricus population throughout the sampling period ranges from 1.2 to 8.3 m. The changes in the size frequencies throughout the months surveyed indicate a variable distribution pattern because of the increase and decrease in water flow, but we observed a peak in the frequency of individuals within the size range 3.5 to 4.5 mm in the population.     Heleobia piscium (d'Orbigny, 1835), a member of the Cochliopidae family found only in South America, is distributed from Entre Ríos, Delta del Paraná, and the littoral of the Río de la Plata down as far as to Punta Indio (Buenos Aires), the southernmost limit of the snail's geographical distribution. To date, little information is available regarding the reproductive cycle of species within this family either in Argentina or throughout South America. The present work analyzed the histology of the reproductive system of the gonochoric species H. piscium and determined the stages oogenesis and spermatogenesis under natural conditions. Specimens of H. piscium were collected in the Multiple-Use Natural Reserve Isla Martín García, located in the Upper Río de la Plata estuary to the south of the mouth of the Uruguay River. The gametogenic cycle in both sexes was found to consist of the following stages: early maturation, maturation, and evacuation. The maturation period was found to extend from January to October and evacuation of the gametes to start in November and end in February (summer in the Southern Hemisphere). The results indicated the H. piscium exhibit a reproductive cycle without a resting period.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse

    The radula of five species of South American Ampullariidae was analysed by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) with the purpose of enlarging new studies on the systematic of this family. The studied species were Pomacea canaliculata (Lamarck, 1822), Pomacea scalaris (d'Orbigny, 1835), Pomella (P.) megastoma (Gray, 1847), Asolene A.) platae (Maton, 1809) and Felipponea neritiniformis (Dall, 1919). The central tooth shows different attributes which provide the means for generic determination; the analysis of the central tooth, the lateral and marginal ones by SEM adds further information for species differentiation

    Una contribuciĂłn molecular al controvertido estatus taxonĂłmico de un grupo de caracoles dulceacuĂ­colas (Caenogastropoda: Rissooidea, Cochliopidae) distribuĂ­dos desde el desierto de los Andes centrales hasta la Patagonia

    For over 40 years malacologists have been discussing the taxonomical status of Heleobia species, an enigmatie genus from Cochliopidae family (Caenogastropoda: Rissooidea). As with other rissooidean families, the considerable character convergence and the paucity of anatomical synapomorphies has proved to be a problem in resolving cochliopid phylogenetic relations and establishing the validity of several nominal cochliopid species. Here we present a molecular contribution to solve the taxonomical status of one of the most abundant Southern South América cochliopid genera which has many endemic species. We report molecular evidence that supports three of the four Heleobia groups described for this región, the “australis”, “parchappii” and “piscium” groups. The fourth, the “hatcheri” group, belongs not to Heleobia but to a different genus which itself should not be considered as part of the family Cochliopidae but closely related to genus Potamolithus Pilsbry & Rush, 1896.Durante más de 40 años se ha discutido el estatus taxonómico de diversas especies del enigmático género Heleobia de la Familia Cochliopidae (Caenogastropoda: Rissooidea). Como sucede con otras familias de rissooideos, la abundancia de caracteres convergentes y la escasez de sinapomorfías anatómicas han representado un problema para resolver las relaciones filogenéticas de Cochliopidae y definir la validez de varias de las especies nominales de esta Familia. Presentamos aquí una contribución molecular tendiente a resolver el estatus taxonómico de uno de los más abundantes géneros de la porción meridional de Sudamérica que incluye varias especies endémicas. Nuestra evidencia molecular reconfirma tres de los cuatro grupos de Heleobia en los que se han agrupado las especies del género en esta región: “australis”, “parchappii” y “piscium”. El cuarto, el grupo “hatcheri ”, no pertenece a Heleobia sino a un género diferente que no debería ser considerado como integrante de la Familia Cochliopidae, sino estrechamente relacionado al género Potamolithus Pilsbry y Rush, 1896.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse

    Simulation of debris flows in the Central Andes based on Open Source GIS: Possibilities, limitations, and parameter sensitivity

    A GIS-based model framework, designed as a raster module for the OpenSource software GRASS, was developed for simulating the mobilization and motion ofdebris flows triggered by rainfall. Designed for study areas up to few square kilometres, thetool combines deterministic and empirical model components for infiltration and surfacerunoff, detachment and sediment transport, slope stability, debris flow mobilization, andtravel distance and deposition. The model framework was applied to selected study areasalong the international road from Mendoza (Argentina) to Central Chile. The inputparameters were investigated at the local scale. The model was run for a number of rainfallscenarios and evaluated using field observations and historical archives in combinationwith meteorological data. The sensitivity of the model to a set of key parameters wastested.     Biomphalaria peregrina (D’Orbigny, 1835) and Drepanotrema kermatoides (D’Orbigny, 1835) were first reported as hosts of Helobdella hyalina Ringuelet, 1942. Both are important species from the Río de La Plata river basin in Argentina. They are associated with macrophytes of lentic or semilentic environments.
