    An Ontology Based Method to Solve Query Identifier Heterogeneity in Post-Genomic Clinical Trials

    The increasing amount of information available for biomedical research has led to issues related to knowledge discovery in large collections of data. Moreover, Information Retrieval techniques must consider heterogeneities present in databases, initially belonging to different domains—e.g. clinical and genetic data. One of the goals, among others, of the ACGT European is to provide seamless and homogeneous access to integrated databases. In this work, we describe an approach to overcome heterogeneities in identifiers inside queries. We present an ontology classifying the most common identifier semantic heterogeneities, and a service that makes use of it to cope with the problem using the described approach. Finally, we illustrate the solution by analysing a set of real queries

    Drosophila melanogaster mutant tan

    Drosophila melanogaster gene tan was originally discovered in the early 20th century as a mutant strain lacking the dark pi gment pattern of wild-type (wt) f lies and, therefore, showing a light yellowish brown color (McEwen, 1918). Flies lack ing Tan function also exhibited abnormalities in vision (Benzer, 1967; Inoue et al. , 1988; True et al. , 2005), and tan males displayed an abnormal courtship behavior (Cook, 1980; Tomkins et al. , 1982). tan 1 ( t 1 ) and tan 3 ( t 3 ) alleles were found as spontaneous mutations, t 3 mutant being apparently lighter than t 1 (Brehme, 1941). tan is the structural gene for N- β -alanyldopamine hydrolase (NBAD-hydrolase or Tan protein), the enzyme that generates dopamine (DA) from NBAD (Wright, 1987; True et al. , 2005). Tan is expressed as a precursor protein of 43.7 kDa. Th is precursor is clea ved into two subunits of 29.9 and 13.8 kDa that apparently conform together a he terodimeric active protein (Wagner et al. , 2007). The enzyme that generates NBAD from DA, th e opposite reaction to the one catalyzed by Tan, is the NBAD-synthase or E bony protein (Wright, 1987; Pérez et al ., 1997), which is codified by the gene ebony . Since both Tan and Ebony ar e involved in cuticle tanni ng, carcinine re gulation, and NBAD metabolism in nervous tissue (Wright, 1987; Pérez et al. , 1997, 2004; Hovemann et al. , 1998; Borycz et al. , 2002; True et al. , 2005), it has been suggested that they function together in a system regulating the levels of dopamine during cuticle sclerotization a nd histamine in the visual metabolism (Borycz et al. , 2002; Pérez et al. , 2010). During the last few years, several publicati ons appeared regarding NBAD-synthase (Wappner et al ., 1996a, b; Pérez et al ., 1997, 2002, 2004, 2010; Hovemann et al. , 1998; Borycz et al. , 2002; Wittkopp et al., 2002; Schachter et al ., 2007), but very little is known about tan (True et al. , 2005; Wagner et al. , 2007).     PVF1/PVR signaling and apoptosis promotes the rotation and dorsal closure of the Drosophila male terminalia

    The Drosophila adult male terminalia originate from the genital disc. During the pupal stages, the external parts of terminalia evert from two ventral stalks; the everted left and right dorsal halves fuse at the dorsal midline. At the same time the male terminalia perform a 360 clockwise rotation. Several mutations are known to affect the rotation of the male terminalia, while none is known to affect dorsal closure. We show here that the Pvf1 gene, encoding one of the three Drosophila homologues of the mammalian VEGF/PDGF growth factors, is required for both processes. Males either mutant for Pvf1 or bearing a dominant negative form of Pvr or stasis (stai), the unique PVF receptor, do not complete either rotation or dorsal closure. Pvf1 expression in the genital disc is restricted to the A8 cells. However, PVF1/PVR signaling influences A8, A9 and A10 cells, suggesting that the PVF1 protein diffuses from its source. Flies hemizygous for the apoptotic genes hid, reaper and grim, or mutant for puckered which encodes a phosphatase that down-regulates the n-Jun-N terminal kinase pathway, lead to the same phenotypes as mutations in PVF1/PVR. Our results indicate that PVF1/PVR signaling functions not only in apoptotic phenomena but are also required during rotation and dorsal closure of the Drosophila male genital disc.Fil: Macias, Ana Maria.     El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar el proceso de reclutamiento y selección de personal en las empresas, tratando tanto los procesos de reclutamiento y selección “tradicionales”, explicando de forma detallada las principales fuentes de reclutamiento, las ventajas e inconvenientes del reclutamiento interno y del externo y las fases y técnicas más habituales del proceso de selección, además de la acogida del trabajador que finalmente resulte contratado, así como también se realiza un análisis de las nuevas tendencias de reclutamiento y selección de personal que están desarrollando las empresas en los últimos años (reclutamiento 2.0). De forma menos extensa, en los últimos puntos del trabajo se incluye un esquema del marco legal que deben tener en cuenta las empresas en todo lo relativo a la contratación de trabajadores, un ejemplo real del proceso de reclutamiento llevado a cabo por ManpowerGroup y finalmente las conclusiones obtenidas tras la realización del trabajo.Grado en Relaciones Laborales y Recursos Humano

    Concurrent characterization of surface diffusion and intermixing of Ge on Si: A classical molecular dynamics study

    Producción CientíficaThe surface diffusion and intermixing of Ge ad-atoms over Si (001) 2 × 1 substrates using classical molecular dynamics (CMD) simulations are characterized here. Several interatomic potentials, parametrizations, and parameter mixing rules are contemplated. A novel simulation scheme is devised to characterize the effective frequency of surface diffusion and intermixing events overcoming the inherent difficulties related to their interdependency in heteroepitaxial systems. The effective energy barriers of these events encompass different atomistic mechanisms weighted by their occurrence probabilities. The overall description of surface diffusion and intermixing based on Stillinger–Weber (SW) potential is in agreement with ab initio calculations and experimental observations, though some atomistic details differ. This study is extended to Si(001) substrates with stressed Ge monolayers grown on top. It is found that Ge ad-atom dynamics is accelerated with respect to the case of the pure Si substrate and that diffusion across dimer rows is mainly mediated by the atomic exchange of the Ge ad-atom with a Ge atom on the surface.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (Project No. TEC2017-86150-P)Junta de Castilla y León (Project No. VA097P17

    Catecholamine-β-alanyl ligase in the medfly Ceratitis capitata

    Dopamine (DA) and norepinephrine (NE) derivatives play an important role in the sclerotization and pigmentation of insect cuticles by serving as precursors for cuticular cross-linking. Protein preparations from prepupae of the medfly, Ceratitis capitata, were able to conjugate beta-alanine with DA producing N-beta-alanyldopamine (NBAD) or with NE, synthesizing N-beta-alanylnorepinephrine (NBANE). The latter reaction has been demonstrated for the first time. Apparent kinetic parameters were obtained for both substrates, DA (V(max)=30.7+/-6.0 pmol min(-1) mg(-1); K(m)=29.5+/-3.5 microM) and NE (V(max)=16.1+/-6.6 pmol min(-1)mg(-1); K(m)=89.0+/-8.3 microM). The same protein seems to be responsible for both enzymatic activities, judging from several criteria like identical behavior under heat inactivation as well as identical Mg2+ and Mn2+ dependent stimulation and Co2+ inhibition. Furthermore, the melanic mutants niger of C. capitata and ebony(4) of D. melanogaster, known to be defective for NBAD synthase, were also unable to synthesize NBANE. The protein preparation acylated tyrosine with much less efficiency, to produce sarcophagine (beta-alanyltyrosine). Strikingly, extracts from the melanic mutants were unable to synthesize sarcophagine. Our results strongly suggest that the enzymatic activity previously known as NBAD synthase is in fact a novel catalytic protein showing broad substrate specificity.     Influence of micromechanics in composite panels buckling loads

An accurate knowledge of these critical buckling loads is essential for structural design. In all cases of buckling of panels, critical loads increases with the increase in the thickness of the panel, however, more economical solutions can be obtained by keeping the thickness of the plate as small as possible and increasing the stability by considering micromechanical aspect such as: fiber orientation relative to axial direction, fiber aspect ratio or fiber volume fraction.     Audience Attention and Emotion in News Filmed with Drones: A Neuromarketing Research

    Emotional journalism is being driven by audiovisual technology such as drones, also known as unmanned aerial vehicles, which have demonstrated their usefulness in transforming objective news into news stories from a new visual perspective, facilitating access to dangerous or difficult places. They also allow for greater immersion by an audience that has become an active participant in the news, and they contribute to the storytelling of communication despite the risk to privacy and security that their misuse might entail. The aim of this research is to determine the differences in attention and intensity of the emotions experienced when viewing two pieces of audiovisual news: One was filmed with the technological support of a drone, and the other was produced in the conventional way. The techniques of eye tracking and galvanic skin response were used in 30 Spanish university students. The results suggest that attention was focused on the most spectacular visual elements, although the images filmed with a drone received a higher concentration of attention from the subjects, and this attention was spread throughout the entire image, which demonstrates that drones enhance the effectiveness of panoramic images with natural landscapes. The greatest emotion generated by viewing the images recorded with drones was statistically significant, but it was limited exclusively to these particular scenes, and not to the entire recording of the news

    Affective neuroscience of ADHD: current data and future directions

    Universidad de MálagaEl trastorno por déficit de atención con hiperactividad (TDAH) es un trastorno de origen neurobiológico complejo y heterogéneo que se caracteriza no sólo por sus disfunciones cognitivas sino también por la existencia de importantes alteraciones afectivas, tanto motivacionales como emocionales. Sin embargo, los correlatos neurobiológicos que subyacen a las disfunciones afectivas del TDAH apenas han sido explorados, en comparación con la extensa investigación llevada a cabo sobre los mecanismos neurales implicados en sus principales déficit cognitivos (atención, inhibición de respuesta y memoria de trabajo). Este trabajo revisa las recientes investigaciones que han explorado las bases neurales involucradas en las alteraciones motivacionales y emocionales mostradas por las personas con TDAH. Asimismo, se discuten las implicaciones prácticas derivadas de los resultados de estos estudios y se proponen nuevas líneas de investigación desde la Neurociencia afectiva.Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a complex and heterogeneous disorder that is characterized not only by cognitive deficits but also by affective dysfunctions, both motivational and emotional. Nevertheless, the neural bases of affective dysfunctions have barely been explored in relation to this disorder, in contrast to extensive research that examined the neural correlates of its main cognitive deficits (attention, response inhibition and working memory). This article reviews the available data regarding the neurobiological substrates of motivational and emotional alterations showed by children, adolescents and adults with ADHD.
