Federal Programs that Protect Young Children's Health
An investment in children's health is an investment in our country's economic health. Infants and toddlers, whose bodies and brains are in their most rapid period of growth, are uniquely vulnerable to even shortterm deprivation. Ensuring that they have the basic physiologic building blocks for healthy bodies and minds is not only the right thing to do -- it is the smart thing to do. Research has shown that children who suffer from poor nutrition, unstable housing and inadequate home heating have a greater likelihood of poor health, a higher risk of developmental delays and, in some cases, an increased risk of hospitalization
Food Insecurity Rates Rise Steeply with Recession
Children's HealthWatch finds that the prevalence of food insecurity in a five-city sample of low-income families with young children increased from 18.5 percent to 22.6 percent between 2007 and 2008. This is the largest year-to-year change seen in the dataset since 2001. The increase is an indication of the economic hardships facing low-income families with young children. This data suggests that we are likely to see significant increases in food insecurity when the U.S. Department of Agriculture issues its own statistics for 2008 in late fall

Shannon entropies of atomic structure factors, off-diagonal order and electron correlation
Shannon entropies of one- and two-electron atomic structure factors in the
position and momentum representations are used to examine the behavior of the
off-diagonal elements of density matrices with respect to the uncertainty
principle and to analyze the effects of electron correlation on off-diagonal
order. We show that electron correlation induces off-diagonal order in position
space which is characterized by larger entropic values. Electron correlation in
momentum space is characterized by smaller entropic values as information is
forced into regions closer to the diagonal. Related off-diagonal correlation
functions are also discussed
Using stepped-care approaches within internet-based interventions for youth anxiety: Three case studies.
Background
There are a lack of clear guidelines for the dissemination of Internet-based cognitive behaviour therapy (ICBT) for childhood and adolescent anxiety in routine care. While self-guided ICBT has greater reach than therapist-guided ICBT, it is plagued by problems of low program adherence and many young people are not successfully treated. It is important that we identify models of ICBT that are accessible, but provide the right support, at the right time to those who need it. Stepped-care models of ICBT offer one potential solution.
Objective
This case study examined the application of stepped-care within an ICBT intervention for childhood and adolescent anxiety, in which young people were stepped up from self-guided to therapist-guided ICBT.
Methods
Three case studies are presented and include young males (aged 11–12 years) who participated in BRAVE Stepped-Care, a new ICBT program incorporating two treatment steps: Step 1 – five sessions of self-guided ICBT and Step 2 – five sessions of therapist-guided ICBT. Participants completed diagnostic assessments at pre- and post-treatment, along with a battery of self-report questionnaires. Step-up requirements were determined at a mid-treatment assessment. Treatment response was determined by change on diagnostic severity and presence of diagnosis and changes in self-reported anxiety symptoms (through T-scores and Reliable Change Indices).
Results
In-depth examination of the three case studies showed that decisions to step-up from Step 1 to Step 2 were complex and required consideration of program engagement and adherence, as well as changes on self-reported anxiety, behavioural indicators of anxiety and parent perspectives. Results showed that non-responders at mid-treatment who were stepped-up to therapist-guided ICBT after Step 1 were able to increase engagement and response to treatment in Step 2, such that they were free of their primary anxiety diagnosis at post-treatment.
Conclusions
The findings highlight the importance of early assessment of engagement and non-response within self-guided ICBT programs for youth anxiety and the positive changes that can subsequently occur when therapist-guidance is introduced mid-treatment for non-responders. The efficacy of stepped-care ICBT models needs to be confirmed in larger randomised controlled trials
The Bulk RS KK-gluon at the LHC
We study the possibility of discovering and measuring the properties of the
lightest Kaluza-Klein excitation of the gluon in a Randall-Sundrum scenario
where the Standard Model matter and gauge fields propagate in the bulk. The
KK-gluon decays primarily into top quarks. We discuss how to use the final states to discover and probe the properties of the KK-gluon.
Identification of highly energetic tops is crucial for this analysis. We show
that conventional identification methods relying on well separated decay
products will not work for heavy resonances but suggest alternative methods for
top identification for energetic tops. We find, conservatively, that resonances
with masses less than 5 TeV can be discovered if the algorithm to identify high
tops can reject the QCD background by a factor of 10. We also find that
for similar or lighter masses the spin can be determined and for lighter masses
the chirality of the coupling to can be measured. Since the energetic
top pair final state is a generic signature for a large class of new physics as
the top quark presumably couples most strongly to the electroweak symmetry
breaking sector, the methods we have outlined to study the properties of the
KK-gluon should also be important in other scenarios.Comment: 21 pages, 13 figure
Correlations in a two-dimensional Bose gas with long range interactions
We study the correlations of two-dimensional dipolar excitons in coupled
quantum wells with a dipole -- dipole repulsive interaction. We show that at
low concentrations, the Bose degeneracy of the excitons is accompanied by
strong multi-particle correlations and the system behaves as a Bose liquid. At
high concentration the particles interaction suppresses quantum coherence and
the system behaves similar to a classical liquid down to a temperature lower
than typical for a Bose gas. We evaluate the interaction energy per particle
and the resulting blue shift of the exciton luminescence that is a direct tool
to measure the correlations. This theory can apply to other systems of bosons
with extended interaction.Comment: 11 pages including 2 figure

Practical dispersion relations for strongly coupled plasma fluids
Very simple explicit analytical expressions are discussed, which are able to
describe the dispersion relations of longitudinal waves in strongly coupled
plasma systems such as one-component plasma and weakly screened Yukawa fluids
with a very good accuracy. Applications to other systems with soft pairwise
