Effects of Private Insurance on Forest Landowners' Incentives to Sequester and Trade Carbon under Uncertainty: Impact of Hurricanes

    Get PDF
We evaluate incentives of forest landowners for sequestering and trading carbon, given the risk of carbon loss from hurricanes, and an opportunity to insure their losses. Results of simulation model reveal that the effect of hurricane risk depends on the variability of returns from carbon and timber and landowners' ability to mitigate risk by diversifying forest holdings across regions or transferring risk by purchasing insurance.Carbon Sequestration, Emissions Trading, Natural Disaster, Risk, Insurance, Risk and Uncertainty, Q54, Q58,

On Factorization of a Special type of Vandermonde Rhotrix

    Get PDF
Vandermonde matrices have important role in many branches of applied mathematics such as combinatorics, coding theory and cryptography. Some authors discuss Vandermonde rhotrices in the literature for its mathematical enrichment. Here, we introduce a special type of Vandermonde rhotrix and obtain its LR factorization, namely left and right triangular factorization which is further used to obtain the inverse of the rhotrix

On Circulant-Like Rhotrices over Finite Fields

Circulant matrices over finite fields are widely used in cryptographic hash functions, Lattice based cryptographic functions and Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). Maximum distance separable codes over finite field GF2 have vital a role for error control in both digital communication and storage systems whereas maximum distance separable matrices over finite field GF2 are used in block ciphers due to their properties of diffusion. Rhotrices are represented in the form of coupled matrices. In the present paper, we discuss the circulant- like rhotrices and then construct the maximum distance separable rhotrices over finite fields

Design and control of electronics based medical emergency system using a Quadcopter

    Get PDF
Thesedays, there are many incidents that lead to road accidents, some being very severe. These accidents sometimes even result in loss of many lives. One of the major reasons for this loss is the lack of timely first aid. In fact, we observed from our survey conducted at an RTO that most deaths during accidents occur, due to delay or lack of first aid. The project focuses on developing a prototype of the system which would cater to the need of medical emergencies that arise during road accidents. This will be accomplished by use of a quadcopter which will deliver the required first aid. With this project, we are attempting to bring about faster accessibility to the patient, than other present means of medical emergency system. In order to achieve this goal, various means of communication will be utilized. The use of a camera will help to view the accident site. This will help to considerably bring down the death rates caused due to lack of timely first aid during accidents

Use of iodine tincture in the management of wound dehiscence in operated mandibular fracture along with hardware salvage: a case report

    Get PDF
Mandibular fractures are one of the most common facial fractures. Depending on the severity, they are treated either by closed reduction or open reduction and internal fixation. Hardware exposure is one of the postoperative complications associated with the latter. Data involving decision regarding removal or salvage of hardware in such cases is lacking. We present a case of wound dehiscence with hardware exposure in an operated mandibular fracture, which was managed by placing tincture iodine dressing, thus obviating the need for hardware removal

Self-dual gravitational instantons and geometric flows of all Bianchi types

We investigate four-dimensional, self-dual gravitational instantons endowed with a product structure RxM_3, where M_3 is homogeneous of Bianchi type. We analyze the general conditions under which Euclidean-time evolution in the gravitational instanton can be identified with a geometric flow of a metric on M_3. This includes both unimodular and non-unimodular groups, and the corresponding geometric flow is a general Ricci plus Yang-Mills flow accompanied by a diffeomorphism.Comment: Latex, 12 pages; Final versio

Controlled laboratory test for the investigation of LNAPL contamination using a 2.0 GHz ground penetrating radar

Groundwater is an important source of fresh water and, consequently, its quality should be properly monitored. Different contaminants can be identified with different types of equipment and/or measurement procedures. Fuel oil contamination forms a "floating" layer over the water table, which has different electrical properties, therefore electromagnetic techniques can be used to image such contaminants. This paper presents a scale-laboratory test where a 2.0 GHz ground penetrating radar (GPR) is used to assess a controlled-fuel oil injection in a shallow sand tank setup. The test examined several scenarios involving different levels of water saturation and fuel oil contamination. The increase of water content produces a reduction of EM wave propagation velocity, moving some fixed/reference targets to higher reflection times. We use simplified relations to obtain approximated dielectric permittivity values, where the inverted results are consistent with those available in the literature for similar scenarios. Rather than suggesting a true quantitative procedure, these observations could be exploited in a qualitative long-term monitoring strategy in common field situations where a contaminant enters a soil matrix and moves through its pore spaces. Finally, the integration of GPR measurements with other monitoring techniques could increase the reliability of the interpretation and the sensitivity to the contaminant concentration
