Beyond the mincer equation: the internal rate of return to higher education in Colombia

    Get PDF
In order to present an estimation of the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) to higher education in Colombia we take advantage of the methodological approach provided by Heckman, Lochner and Todd (2005). Trying to overcome the criticism that surrounds interpretations of the education coefficient of Mincer equations as being the rate ofreturn to investments in education we develop a more structured approach of estimation, which controls for selection bias, includes more accurate measures of labor income and the role of education costs and income taxes. Our results implied a lower rate of return than the ones found in the Colombian literature and show that the Internal Rate ofReturn for higher education in Colombia lies somewhere between 0.074 and 0.128. The results vary according to the year analyzed and individual´s gender. This last result reinforces considerations regarding gender discrimination in the Colombian labor market.Education returns, Mincer Equation, Internal Rate of Return, Colombia

APORTACIONES DE A. AGUSTÍN Y G. FAERNO (MSS. 7901-2 BN) A LA ENMIENDA DE LOS FRAGMENTOS DE L. POMPINIO

The author of this article analyzes the metrical and critical emendations written by the humanists A. Agustín (1517-1586) and G. Faerno (1510-1561) to the text of L. Pomponius' 'Atellanae'. These unpublished notes, which may be found in the mss. 7901-2 from the BN of Madrid ('Fragmenta veterum latinorum scriptorum'), constitute the first attempt to put in order the extant fragments of the earlier latin poets. Unfortunately, this project remained unfinished, probably due to the publication of H. Estiènne's 'Fragmenta' (1564). In spite of the lack of a historical methodology, their research for the best and more appropriate 'lectiones', according to the general sense and the metrical structure of each fragment, leads our humanists to propose accurate conjectures still surviving in modern editions, though ascribed to later scholars. In other cases, their comments, which are no more than approximations and provisional answers, can help us to correct or, at least, to find out some errors in the textual tradition. The author of this article analyzes the metrical and critical emendations written by the humanists A. La “desprotección” del suelo rústico frente a la ocupación ilegal. El caso del Cerro de San Miguel

    Get PDF

    Get PDF
In several studies exposure to the media and attention to their political contents have been proven to be explanatory factors in the development of political attitudes among citizens, ranging from the generation of political knowledge to a contribution towards the development of greater citizen involvement and participation in the system. A central element of political attitudes is the level of political sophistication, given that it shows the public’s knowledge about the political system as well as their level of interest in matters relating to politics. To measure the relationship between communicative variables and the development of political sophistication, a representative survey of the population of the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey in the post-electoral context of 2012 was carried out. The results show how media attention is the main explanatory variable in the strengthening of political sophistication among citizens, although its impact is produced through mediation by interpersonal conversation

Discovering Business Models for Software Process Management - An Approach for Integrating Time and Resource Perspectives from Legacy Information Systems

    Get PDF
Business Process Management (BPM) is becoming the modern core to support business in all type of organizations and software business is not an exception. Software companies are often involved in important and complex collaborative projects carried out by many stakeholders. Each actor (customers, suppliers or government instances, among others) works with individual and shared processes. Everyone needs dynamic and evolving approaches for managing their software projects lifecycle. Nevertheless, many companies still use systems that are out of the scope of BPM for planning and control projects and managing enterprise content (Enterprise Content Management, ECM) as well as all kinds of resources (ERP). Somehow systems include scattered artifacts that are related to BPM perspectives: control and data flow, time, resource and case, for example. It is aimed to get interoperable BPM models from these classical Legacy Information Systems (LIS). Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) allows going from application code to higher-level of abstraction models. Particularly, there are standards and proposals for reverse engineering LIS. This paper illustrates LIS cases for software project planning and ECM, looking at time and resource perspectives. To conclude, we will propose a MDE-based approach for taking out business models in the context of software process management.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TIN2013-46928-C3-3-

An integrated content modeling approach for educational modules

    Get PDF
Educational modules – concise units of study capable of integrating theoretical/practical contents and supporting tools – can be seen as relevant mechanisms to facilitate the student’s apprenticeship. The establishment of processes and modeling approaches should ease the cooperative work to create, reuse and evolve educational modules, taking also into account the impact on the learning process. There are initiatives to address the problem of modeling educational contents, but none of them provides a complete set of features addressing the conceptual, instructional and didactic perspectives. Moreover, these initiatives do not consider a systematic process for developing educational modules. In this work we summarize the main aspects of a standardized process for developing educational modules we have proposed, focusing on the modeling activity for structuring the learning contents. An integrated modeling approach is presented and its application is illustrated by the development of an educational module for the software testing domain. The material produced has been applied and preliminarily evaluated in terms of the student's attitude toward content, usability and navigational aspects.Education for the 21 st century - impact of ICT and Digital Resources ConferenceRed de Universidades con Carreras en Informática (RedUNCI
