Abstract Analysis of ethanol using copper and nickel sheet electrodes by cyclic voltammetry (CV) method has been carried out. The linear correlations between ethanol concentrations with current density were recorded for both electrodes. The results, of the study showed that the correlation coefficient using Cu electrode was r = 0.9957 and limit of detection of 0.5% (v/v) comparatively, by Ni electrode the correlation coefficient of obtained r = 0.9956 with the same limit of detection with Cu electrode. As a conclusion, it can be made that Cu electrode was a better electrode compared to Ni electrode for analyzing of ethanol using CV method, however it was observed that Cu electrode was easily oxidized by the formation of metal oxide on the electrode surface compared to Ni electrode. Introduction Alcohols in so many beverages require to be analyzed for the purpose of observation, health and commerce. The most used method for the determination of ethanol in beverages is based on the separation of compound by distillation for further measurement of a physical property such as the specific gravity. Instrumental methods such as liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, near and mid-spectroscopy, fluorimetry and colorimetry have also been describe

The saying ‘seeing is believing’ describes the curious nature of man to see things far smaller than can be perceived with the naked eye. It has been known for over 2000 years that glass bends light. Since then, many innovations have been made to manipulate light bending through different shapes of clear glass. These innovations paved the way for the development of the optical lens

THREE DIMENSIONAL SIMULATION OF SUSPENSION FLOW IN A MOLD CAVITY

ABSTRACT This paper presents three-dimensional simulation of fiber suspension flows in a cavity using the Finite Volume Method (FVM). The numerical simulation model described makes it possible to predict the propagation of the fiber-polymer solution and fiber orientation during the filling phase. Therefore, the objective of the work is to develop a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model to simulate and characterize the fiber suspension flow in three dimensional cavities. The model is intended to describe the fiber orientation distribution in three dimensional mold cavities. The continuity, momentum, energy and the fiber orientation equations are solved using the FVM. The flow is considered to be incompressible, non-isothermal, transient, and to behave as non-Newtonian fluid. A numerical analysis is presented to illustrate the application of the FVM to dilute suspension flows in injection molding processes. The volume-of-fluid method is employed to describe the flow of the two incompressible, immiscible phases, i.e., liquid suspension and air. Since the flow is a non-Newtonian, the Cross model is used to describe the shear-thinning behavior of the suspension. The governing equations of the flow and the fiber are implemented and solved by means of the open source code OpenFOAM. The evolution equation of the fiber orientation contains a fourth order orientation tensor which is approximated in terms of second order tensor through the use of appropriate closure rules. In this study the Hybrid closure model of Advani and Tucker is used to approximate the fourth order orientation tensor. To validate the numerical algorithm, test cases of suspension flow in a rectangular cavity are modeled for different fiber-polymer matrices. The numerical results are compared with available experimental findings and with those of Newtonian flows

EP Based Optimization for Estimating Synchronizing and Damping Torque Coefficients

    Get PDF
Abstract: This paper presents Evolutionary Programming (EP) based optimization technique for estimating synchronizing torque coefficients, K s and damping torque coefficients, K d of a synchronous machine. These coefficients are used to identify the angle stability of a system. Initially, a Simulink model was utilized to generate the time domain response of rotor angle under various loading conditions. EP was then implemented to optimize the values of K s and K d within the same loading conditions. Result obtained from the experiment are very promising and revealed that it outperformed the Least Square (LS) method and Artificial Immune System (AIS) during the comparative studies. Validation with respect to eigenvalues determination confirmed that the proposed technique is feasible to solve the angle stability problems

Somatic copy-neutral loss of heterozygosity and copy number abnormalities in Malaysian sporadic colorectal carcinoma patients

ABSTRACT. Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in many countries, including Malaysia. The accumulation of genomic alterations is an important feature of colorectal carcinogenesis. A better understanding of the molecular events underlying the stages of colorectal carcinogenesis might be helpful in the detection and management of the disease. We used a commercially available singlenucleotide polymorphism genotyping array to detect both copy number abnormalities (CNAs) and copy-neutral loss of heterozygosity (LOH) in sporadic colorectal carcinomas. Matched tumor and normal tissues of 13 colorectal carcinomas (Dukes' stages A-D) were analyzed using a 250K single nucleotide polymorphism array. An additional assay was performed to determine the microsatellite instability status by using the National Cancer Institute-recommended BAT-26 panel. In general, copy number gain (92.3%) was most common, followed by copy number loss (53.8%) and copy-neutral LOH (46.2%). Frequent CNAs of gains and losses were observed on chromosomes 7p, 8, 13q, 17p, 18q, and 20q, and copy-neutral LOH was observed on chromosomes 2, 6, 12, 13q, 14q, 17, 20p, 19q, and 22q. Even though genomic alterations are associated with colorectal cancer progression, our results showed that DNA CNAs and copy-neutral LOH do not reflect disease progression in at least 50% tumors. Copy-neutral LOH was observed in both early and advanced tumors, which favors the involvement of these genomic alterations in the early stages of tumor development

Abstract. ISO 14649 standard, commonly recognized as STEP-NC is a data model interface for computer numerical controllers. STEP-NC goes much further that G codes and has a more comprehensive data model that overcomes the lack of process information in ISO 6983 files (G codes programming). The STEP compliant approach brings the possibility to integrate the machine controller to the overall enterprise information network, with the intention of having bi-directional data flow. This will provide the novel capability for upstream feedback of information from the numerical controller to the design and process areas in the process planning and manufacturing. This paper presents the key concepts of the proposed STEP Convertor of the STEP-CNC Mapping System. The objective of the main system is to take a generic STEP file as the input to drive a CNC machine tool. The main system is broken down into two main sub-systems, STEP Convertor and STEP-NC Translator. This paper will focus solely on the information structure and conceptualization of the STEP Convertor
