Interplay between the electrical transport properties of GeMn thin films and Ge substrates
We present evidence that electrical transport studies of epitaxial p-type
GeMn thin films fabricated on high resistivity Ge substrates are severely
influenced by parallel conduction through the substrate, related to the large
intrinsic conductivity of Ge due to its small bandgap. Anomalous Hall
measurements and large magneto resistance effects are completely understood by
taking a dominating substrate contribution as well as the measurement geometry
into account. It is shown that substrate conduction persists also for well
conducting, degenerate, p-type thin films, giving rise to an effective
two-layer conduction scheme. Using n-type Ge substrates, parallel conduction
through the substrate can be reduced for the p-type epi-layers, as a
consequence of the emerging pn-interface junction. GeMn thin films fabricated
on these substrates exhibit a negligible magneto resistance effect. Our study
underlines the importance of a thorough characterization and understanding of
possible substrate contributions for electrical transport studies of GeMn thin

Electron beam driven alkali metal atom source for loading a magneto-optical trap in a cryogenic environment
We present a versatile and compact electron beam driven source for alkali
metal atoms, which can be implemented in cryostats. With a heat load of less
than 10mW, the heat dissipation normalized to the atoms loaded into the
magneto-optical Trap (MOT), is about a factor 1000 smaller than for a typical
alkali metal dispenser. The measured linear scaling of the MOT loading rate
with electron current observed in the experiments, indicates that electron
stimulated desorption is the corresponding mechanism to release the atoms.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Impact of fire on leaf nutrients, arthropod fauna and herbivory of native and exotic eucalypts in Kings Park, Perth, Western Australia
The vegetation of Kings Park, near the centre of Perth, Western Australia, once had an overstorey of Eucalyptus marginata (jarrah) or Eucalyptus gomphocephala (tuart), and many trees still remain in the bushland parts of the Park. Avenues and roadsides have been planted with eastern Australian species, including Eucalyptus cladocalyx (sugar gum) and Eucalyptus botryoides (southern mahogany), both of which have become invasive. The present study examined the effect of a recent burn on the level of herbivory on these native and exotic eucalypts. Leaf damage, shoot extension and number of new leaves were measured on tagged shoots of saplings of each tree species in unburnt and burnt areas over an 8-month period. Leaf macronutrient levels were quantified and the number of arthropods on saplings was measured at the end of the recording period by chemical knockdown. Leaf macronutrients were mostly higher in all four species in the burnt area, and this was associated with generally higher numbers of canopy arthropods and greater levels of leaf damage. It is suggested that the pulse of soil nutrients after the fire resulted in more nutrient-rich foliage, which in turn was more palatable to arthropods. The resulting high levels of herbivory possibly led to reduced shoot extension of E. gomphocephala, E. botryoides and, to a lesser extent, E. cladocalyx. This acts as a negative feedback mechanism that lessens the tendency for lush, post-fire regrowth to outcompete other species of plants. There was no consistent difference in the levels of the various types of leaf damage or of arthropods on the native and the exotic eucalypts, suggesting that freedom from herbivory is not contributing to the invasiveness of the two exotic species
Quantum state transfer in arrays of flux qubits
In this work, we describe a possible experimental realization of Bose's idea
to use spin chains for short distance quantum communication [S. Bose, {\it
Phys. Rev. Lett.} {\bf 91} 207901]. Josephson arrays have been proposed and
analyzed as transmission channels for systems of superconducting charge qubits.
Here, we consider a chain of persistent current qubits, that is appropriate for
state transfer with high fidelity in systems containing flux qubits. We
calculate the fidelity of state transfer for this system. In general, the
Hamiltonian of this system is not of XXZ-type, and we analyze the magnitude and
the effect of the terms that don't conserve the z-component of the total spin.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure
Multi-band quantum ratchets
We investigate directed motion in non-adiabatically rocked ratchet systems
sustaining few bands below the barrier. Upon restricting the dynamics to the
lowest M bands, the total system-plus-bath Hamiltonian is mapped onto a
discrete tight-binding model containing all the information both on the intra-
and inter-well tunneling motion. A closed form for the current in the
incoherent tunneling regime is obtained. In effective single-band ratchets, no
current rectification occurs. We apply our theory to describe rectification
effects in vortex quantum ratchets devices. Current reversals upon variation of
the ac-field amplitude or frequency are predicted.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letter
Transcription Factor Efg1 Shows a Haploinsufficiency Phenotype in Modulating the Cell Wall Architecture and Immunogenicity of Candida albicans
The Candida albicans transcription factor Efg1 is known to be involved in many different cellular processes, including morphogenesis, general metabolism, and virulence. Here we show that besides its manifold roles, Efg1 also has a prominent effect on cell wall structure and composition, strongly affecting the structural glucan part. Deletion of only one allele of EFG1 already results in severe phenotypes for cell wall biogenesis, comparable to those with deletion of both alleles, indicative of a severe haploinsufficiency for EFG1. The observed defects in structural setup of the cell wall, together with previously reported alterations in expression of cell surface proteins, result in altered immunogenic properties of strains with compromised Efg1 function. This is shown by interaction studies with macrophages and primary dendritic cells. The structural changes in the cell wall carbohydrate meshwork presented here, together with the manifold changes in cell wall protein composition and metabolism reported in other studies, contribute to the altered immune response mounted by innate immune cells and to the altered virulence phenotypes observed for strains lacking EFG1

U Memorijalnom centru Buhenvald septembra 2000. godine održan je simpozij o Holokaustu, genocidu i drugim oblicima državnog terora u XX veku. Na osnovu izlaganja na tom skupu direktor Memorijalnog centra, prof.dr. Folkhard Knige i prof. Norbert Fraj, priredili su zbornik u kome brojni autori iz različitih zemalja obrađuje temu ne samo zločina, nego i raznih mogućnosti i različite prakse sećanja na njega. Učesnici tog skupa su u 29 eseja za ovaj zbornik prilagodili, odnosno, dopunili svoja izlaganja uzimajući u obzir i nastalu diskusiju o nekim vidovima kulture sećanja i osvetljavanja Holokausta. Jedan od tih eseja je "Odsjaj" Buhenvalda
A comparison of the autecology of two seed-taking ant genera, Rhytidoponera and Melophorus
Members of the genus Rhytidoponera and, to a lesser extent, certain Melophorus spp. are keystone mutualists for the dispersal of seeds in the southwest of Western Australia, with important ramifications for the ecology and speciation of plants in this biodiversity hotspot. For this reason, it is important to understand the autecology of the relevant ant species and the way in which they interact with plant seeds. This paper addresses key aspects of the ecology of three such ant species, Rhytidoponera violacea (Forel), R. inornata Crawley and Melophorus turneri perthensis Wheeler. Data are presented on their geographic distribution, seasonality of foraging, diurnal activity, response to fire, nest site preference, nest structure, colony size, feeding habits, foraging response to seed availability, and seedling emergence from nests. The role of all three species as seed dispersers is confirmed, and all three species have ecologies that are well-suited for dispersal and survival of native plant seeds. Preservation of this interaction is important for the conservation of plants, and it is fortuitous that all three species are able to survive disturbance and return to rehabilitated areas. However, the smaller R. inornata, and to a lesser extent, the larger R. violacea, are vulnerable to invasive ant [Pheidole megacephala (Fabricius)] incursions. M. turneri perthensis is able to coexist with the invasive ant unless this is at high densities, probably as a result of its ability to forage during high temperatures when the invasive species is inactive
