Larval development of the freshwater shrimp Pseudopalaemon amazonensis Ramos-Porto was studied in the laboratory based on the offspring of ovigerous females collected in a small "terra-firme" forest stream near Manaus, Brazil. Ovigerous females with a mean total length of 36.5 ± 1.9 mm carried 13-19 eliptical, yolk-rich eggs measuring 2.55 ± 0.16 x 1.64 ± 0.11 mm. The larval period consisted of 3 benthie stages and the larvae accomplished metamorphosis after 7-8 days without feeding. The newly-hatched larva had sessile eyes and all appendages, except for the uropods; chelipeds were present as uniramous buds, but walking legs were fully developed and functional. Descriptions and illustrations of the 3 larval and first juvenile stages are presented.

There is considerable confusion in the literature regarding the systematic position and distribution of two pseudothelphusid crabs originally described as Potamocarcinus reflexifrons Ortmann, 1897 and Potamocarcinus reflexifrons fittkaui Bott, 1967, and now included in the genus Fredius Pretzman, 1965, as F. reflexifrons and F. fittkaui. Study of numerous specimens from recent collections, together with a critical analysis of the data published in the literature, shows that both taxa could be easily separated by gonopodal characters. The two species occupy discrete areas of distribution along the main axis of the Amazon River and in the upper Rio Negro Basin, respectively, with an overlap in the Atlantic Guianas. It is postulated that they originated from a common ancestor, through a process of vicariance, in the two areas observed at present. Permeability of barriers allowed their further occupancy of the Atlantic Guianas after the marine regressions in this area.Há uma considerável confusão na literatura a respeito da posição sistemática e distribuição de duas espécies de caranguejos pseudotelfusídeos originalmente descritos como Potamocarcinus reflexifrons Ortmann, 1897 e Potamocarcinus reflexifrons fittkaui Bott, 1967, atualmente incluídos no gênero Fredius Pretzmann, 1965 como F. reflexifrons e F. fittkaui.

Description of a new genus and species of Pseudothelphusidae Ortmann, 1893 (Decapoda: Brachyura) from Panama, and new records and remarks on the zoogeography of Trichodactylus quinquedentatus Rathbun, 1893 (Trichodactylidae) in Central America

A collection of freshwater crabs from Central America resulted in the description of a new genus and two new species of pseudothelphusid crabs from Panama, and the record of the trichodactylid Trichodactylus quinquedentatus Rathbun, 1893 from Honduras and Panama. A new monotypic genus, Emberacarcinus n. gen., is erected to accommodate Potamocarcinus darienensis Magalhães, Campos & Turkay, 2013. The two new species and can be distinguished from their respective congeners by the structures of the male first gonopods: Ptychophallus bilobatus n. sp. has a bilobed mesial process whereas Potamocarcinus tapirrhynchus n. sp. exhibits a mesial process as a stout, rounded projection obliquely directed apical-cephalically and partially fused to the mesial lobe of the apical crest. The taxonomic affinities of both species with their closest congeners are treated, and the zoogeographic implication of the new records of T. quinquedentatus in Central America is discussed. © The Author(s) 2019

The oocyte development in Macrobrachium amazonicum(Heller, 1862), a freshwater palaemonid shrimp from Central Amazonia is described. This process is similar to thatof Macrobrachium acanthurus(Wiegmann, 1836). The earliest phases occupy the inner ovarian region, while the vitellogenic and the mature phases are found in the outer one. Both post-ovu-latory follicles and follicular cells morphologies are also described and illustrated.É descrito o desenvolvimento ovocitário em Macrobrachium amazonicum(Heller, 1862), um camarão dulcícola da família Palaemonidae da Amazônia Central.

First confirmed report of a primary freshwater crab (Brachyura: Pseudothelphusidae) associated with bromeliads in the Neotropics

Bromeliads can hold water in their axils, which can harbor an astonishing diversity of macro invertebrates, including decapod crustaceans. Except of a casual report from Trinidad, true freshwater crabs in these phytotelmata have been found exclusively in the Old World, and observations in the New World of crabs associated with bromeliads have been limited to sesarmid crabs, non-primary freshwater crabs that generally do not breed in freshwater. Here we report the presence of a true, or primary, freshwater crab in water-filled axils of a bromeliad in the Neotropics. Immature specimens of the pseudothelphusid crab provisionally identified as Epilobocera cf. gilmanii (Smith, 1870) were collected from inside the bromeliad Hohenbergia penduliflora (A. Richard) Mez. in western Cuba. Pseudothelphusid crabs have developed additional respiratory structures, which make them suitable candidates for a life in phytotelmic microhabitats. It is still uncertain whether in Cuba these crabs actually breed in phytotelmata or only use this microhabitat during their early life stages. © 2016 by The Crustacean Society.
