Establishing links between organizational climate, employee well-being and historical patient outcomes
This research undertaken in collaboration with Queensland Health analysed the links between dimensions of workplace climate/employee well-being contained in a number of
Queensland Health databases, including the Patient Satisfaction Survey, the Clinical Incident database, the compliments and complaints database, the Variable Life Adjusted Display (VLAD) Database and the Better Workplaces
Staff Opinion Survey database. Queensland Health sought to identify in what ways workplace climate is related to patient outcomes using existing datasets collected within the Queensland Health Centre for Healthcare Improvement. The process of establishing links involved matching aggregated data for specific facilities (where possible), or failing that, larger facilities (e.g. Hospital), or the Health Service District. Once the datasets had been matched on location or facility, correlations were calculated between the aggregated scores. The results demonstrated links between the data sets. These links showed that a better workplace climate is associated with greater reported numbers of clinical incidents, especially âno harmâ clinical incidents. There was also a link between workplace climate and patient compliments/complaints which show that unsolicited compliments received from patients and their families are clearly related to a number of positive aspects of workplace climate (workplace morale, role clarity, and appraisal and recognition) and individual
morale. The results linking workplace climate and patient satisfaction showed that there is a strong positive relationship between overall patient satisfaction and role clarity, and a negative relationship between overall patient satisfaction and both workplace distress and
excessive work demands. While these results relate to historical data and therefore should not be construed to reflect the current state of operation within Queensland Health, they are still indicative of some very important
relationships. This is the first study to demonstrate that more positive clinical management practices, better perceptions of the workplace climate and better employee
well-being are a reflection of a better incident reporting and learning culture in a health care organization, ultimately resulting in improved patient outcomes
Cluster Development Test 2: An Assessment of a Failed Test
On 31 July 2008 the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Crew Exploration Vehicle Parachute Assembly System team conducted the final planned cluster test of the first generation parachute recovery system design. The two primary test objectives were to demonstrate the operation of the complete parachute system deployed from a full scale capsule simulator and to demonstrate the test technique of separating the capsule simulator from the Low Velocity Air Drop pallet used to extract the test article from a United States Air Force C-17 aircraft. The capsule simulator was the Parachute Test Vehicle with an accurate heat shield outer mold line and forward bay compartment of the Crew Exploration Vehicle Command Module. The Parachute Test Vehicle separated cleanly from the pallet following extraction, but failed to reach test conditions resulting in the failure of the test and the loss of the test assets. No personnel were injured. This paper will discuss the design of the test and the findings of the team that investigated the test, including a discussion of what were determined to be the root causes of the failure
Floppy swimming: Viscous locomotion of actuated elastica
Actuating periodically an elastic filament in a viscous liquid generally
breaks the constraints of Purcell's scallop theorem, resulting in the
generation of a net propulsive force. This observation suggests a method to
design simple swimming devices - which we call "elastic swimmers" - where the
actuation mechanism is embedded in a solid body and the resulting swimmer is
free to move. In this paper, we study theoretically the kinematics of elastic
swimming. After discussing the basic physical picture of the phenomenon and the
expected scaling relationships, we derive analytically the elastic swimming
velocities in the limit of small actuation amplitude. The emphasis is on the
coupling between the two unknowns of the problems - namely the shape of the
elastic filament and the swimming kinematics - which have to be solved
simultaneously. We then compute the performance of the resulting swimming
device, and its dependance on geometry. The optimal actuation frequency and
body shapes are derived and a discussion of filament shapes and internal
torques is presented. Swimming using multiple elastic filaments is discussed,
and simple strategies are presented which result in straight swimming
trajectories. Finally, we compare the performance of elastic swimming with that

Economics of education research: a review and future prospects
In this paper we offer an appraisal of the economics of education research area, charting its history as a field and discussing the ways in which economists have contributed both to education research and to education policy-making. In particular, we highlight the theoretical and methodological contributions that economists have made to the field of education during the last 50 years. Despite the success of the economics of education as a field of inquiry, we argue that some of the contributions made by economists could be limited if the economics of education is seen as quite distinct from the other disciplines working in the field of education. In these areas of common interest, economists need to work side by side with the other major disciplines in the field of education if their contribution to the field is to be maximised, particularly in terms of applying improved methodology. We conclude that the study of education acquisition and its economic and social impact in the economics of education research area is very likely to remain a fertile research ground. Acknowledgement
Synchronization of active mechanical oscillators by an inertial load
Motivated by the operation of myogenic (self-oscillatory) insect flight
muscle, we study a model consisting of a large number of identical oscillatory
contractile elements joined in a chain, whose end is attached to a damped
mass-spring oscillator. When the inertial load is small, the serial coupling
favors an antisynchronous state in which the extension of one oscillator is
compensated by the contraction of another, in order to preserve the total
length. However, a sufficiently massive load can sychronize the oscillators and
can even induce oscillation in situations where isolated elements would be
stable. The system has a complex phase diagram displaying quiescent,
synchronous and antisynchrononous phases, as well as an unsual asynchronous
phase in which the total length of the chain oscillates at a different

Towards ubiquitous accessibility: capability-based profiles and adaptations, delivered via the semantic web
The continuing proliferation of mobile devices, content and applications presents barriers to the mainstreaming of Assistive Technologies (ATs), despite their potential utility for users in demanding situations or with minor-to-moderate impairments. We have previously proposed that user profiling based on human rather than machine-oriented capabilities, coupled with a shift from conspicuous ATs to considering a broader range of adaptations presents opportunities for platform and AT vendors to support many more users. However there has not been a standard, consistent and, most importantly, straightforward way to deliver these benefits. We propose that this delivery gap can be bridged by using the semantic web and related technologies, so the potential benefits of the capability-based approach may be realised
Piloting a holistic information culture program: The experience of CETYS Universidad system of libraries
This article presents the staff, structure, methods and preliminary results from the pilot of a holistic information literacy program developed in the System of Libraries of CETYS Universidad in Mexico. âInformation Culture Developmentâ (ICD) is driven by action research (AR) and the concept of information culture (IC), comprised of information literacy (IL), digital literacy (DL), and research competences. ICD aims at developing these competences and supporting reflection and improvement upon university practices related to curriculum, teaching, and research. ICDâs initiatives and products were divided into four axes: a) curriculum and learning support, b) information and digital literacies development, c) research and scientific communication support, and d) evaluation and communication of results. ICDâs pilot involved workshops and activities framed within an AR perspective and a mixed methods approach. Preliminary results determine the success of activities with academics and students regarding their strengths and weaknesses in IC-related competencies
Analysing the role of job, interpersonal, and personal affective resources in alleviating anxiety and depression at work
Aim: Recent research has highlighted the importance of personal and job-related resources in sustaining employee engagement and motivation, and reducing burnout and ill-health. Following the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) approach which distinguishes between two related constructs (engagement and burnout) and indicates how these are differentially related to motivational and health outcomes in the workplace, the current study analysed interpersonal resources and job resources to determine how these work to alleviate anxiety and depression in the workplace.
Design: A latent modelling approach was used to specify the theoretical model which contained two types of interpersonal resources (supervisor and co-worker support), two types of job resources (control and income), two affective personal resources (PA and NA), anxiety and depression. The final model was also simultaneously tested across subgroups representing those with lower and higher working hours.
Method: Data were collected from a web-based survey of 416 employed Australians.
Results: The multigroup SEM with measurement weights, structural weights and structural covariances constrained to be equal across groups was a good fit to the data with Chi square = 55.682, df = 43, p = .09, GFI = .97, CFI = .99, RMSEA = .03. Job resources exerted an indirect (beneficial) effect on depression through PA confirming the importance of control as a contributor to positive affective well-being. Interpersonal resources exerted multiple indirect (beneficial) effects on depression through PA, NA, and anxiety indicating that these multiple pathways are all important in alleviating anxiety and depression, primarily through reducing negative affective well-being. These beneficial effects are evident for both those with lower and higher working hours.
Conclusion: Supportive work climates may be particularly effective in reducing anxiety and depression when they are combined with other work factors that enhance employeesâ sense of control. This study also highlights that personal affective resources are the immediate precursors to anxiety and depression in the workplace
