thesisThe lands of the Great Basin are often considered to be bleak, empty places without history or stories. When I was fifteen, my grandfather led me on a short journey around the center of the Pahvant Valley, a relatively small portion of the Great Basin. Using this trip as a frame, I illustrate the complexity of the place, exploring the biologic, geologic, as well as human history of the area. Simultaneously, I work to show the importance of memory in the creation of attachment and appreciation of people to a specific place
Familiesā roles in childrenās literacy in the UK throughout the 20th century
This paper explores the changing roles of families in childrenās developing literacy in the UK in the last century. It discusses how, during this time, understandings of reading and writing have evolved into the more nuanced notion of literacy. Further, in acknowledging changes in written communication practices, and shifting attitudes to reading and writ- ing, the paper sketches out how families have always played some part in the literacy of younger generations; though reading was frequently integral to the lives of many families throughout the past century, we consider in particular the more recent enhancement of childrenās literacy through targeted family programmes. The paper considers policy implications for promoting young childrenās literacy through work with families
TESS Hunt for Young and Maturing Exoplanets (THYME). VI. An 11 Myr Giant Planet Transiting a Very-low-mass Star in Lower Centaurus Crux
International audienceMature super-Earths and sub-Neptunes are predicted to be ā Jovian radius when younger than 10 Myr. Thus, we expect to find 5-15 R ā planets around young stars even if their older counterparts harbor none. We report the discovery and validation of TOI 1227b, a 0.85 Ā± 0.05 R J (9.5 R ā) planet transiting a very-low-mass star (0.170 Ā± 0.015 M ā) every 27.4 days. TOI 1227's kinematics and strong lithium absorption confirm that it is a member of a previously discovered subgroup in the Lower Centaurus Crux OB association, which we designate the Musca group. We derive an age of 11 Ā± 2 Myr for Musca, based on lithium, rotation, and the color-magnitude diagram of Musca members. The TESS data and ground-based follow-up show a deep (2.5%) transit. We use multiwavelength transit observations and radial velocities from the IGRINS spectrograph to validate the signal as planetary in nature, and we obtain an upper limit on the planet mass of ā0.5 M J. Because such large planets are exceptionally rare around mature low-mass stars, we suggest that TOI 1227b is still contracting and will eventually turn into one of the more common ā planets
