    Spin-lattice coupling mediated giant magnetodielectricity across the spin reorientation in Ca2FeCoO5

    The structural, phonon, magnetic, dielectric, and magneto dielectric responses of the pure bulk Brownmillerite compound Ca2FeCoO5 are reported. This compound showed giant magneto dielectric response (10%-24%) induced by strong spin-lattice coupling across its spin reorientation transition (150-250 K). The role of two Debye temperatures pertaining to differently coordinated sites in the dielectric relaxations is established. The positive giant magneto-dielectricity is shown to be a direct consequence of the modulations in the lattice degrees of freedom through applied external field across the spin reorientation transition. Our study illustrates novel control of magneto-dielectricity by tuning the spin reorientation transition in a material that possess strong spin lattice coupling.Comment: 7 pages, 12 figure

    Does sea level pressure modulate the dynamic and thermodynamic forcing in the tropical Indian Ocean?

    Three areas, the north Indian Ocean (NIO), the equatorial Indian Ocean (EIO) and the south Indian Ocean (SIO), were chosen over the tropical Indian Ocean to investigate the dependency of sea surface temperature (SST), wind speed (WS) and sea level pressure (SLP) on latent heat flux (LHF). The dynamic and thermodynamic behaviour of the tropical Indian Ocean was studied from the trends of the scatter represented by the mean and standard deviation of LHF, WS and humidity gradient, q s - q a, D q, binned in 1°C SST interval plotted against SST. The direct linear relationship of LHF with SST reverses at some point to display an inverse relationship when the atmosphere is coupled with the ocean. The point at which the reversal takes place marks the threshold SST which appears to have an inherent relationship with the SLP, especially when the ocean-atmosphere system is coupled. North of 5° S, the LHF peaks at the threshold SST of 27.5°C and decreases gradually on either side. The resemblance of the SST-LHF curve of SIO and EIO to that of the equatorial Pacific Ocean can be attributed to the fact that both regimes fell under the same pressure band that covers the equatorial Pacific. Shifting of LHF maxima to a lower SST regime as SLP increases is noticed at southern and northern latitudes, while such a regime shift is not noticed at the equator. This phenomenon can be attributed to relatively weaker air-sea coupling and subsequent lower LHF production at the EIO

    Patterns in Southeast Florida Coral Reef Community Composition

    The Southeast (SE) Florida coral reef system is the northern extension of the Florida reef tract. This high latitude system lies offshore a heavily populated and urbanized coast and therefore is affected by numerous environmental and anthropogenic stressors. Using annual monitoring data collected in 2004, the southeast lorida reef community was analyzed to investigate patterns in community composition in various habitat types. Data was collected by SCUBA divers who conducted a 30m2 belt transect survey at 24 sample sites offshore Broward County (SE), Florida. Sites ranged in depth range from six to 18 meters. The 24 sites occurred on five different reef habitat categories: ridge-shallow, colonized pavement-shallow, linear inner reef, linear middle reef, and linear outer reef. These sites were established for the Broward County Board of County Commissioners and Environmental Protection and Growth Management Department, Biological Resources Division, in order to monitor Broward County coral communities and sedimentation rates in relation to possible effects from a beach renourishment project.     A Systematic Literature Review of Individuals\u27 Perspectives on Privacy and Genetic Information in the United States

    Concerns about genetic privacy affect individuals\u27 willingness to accept genetic testing in clinical care and to participate in genomics research. To learn what is already known about these views, we conducted a systematic review, which ultimately analyzed 53 studies involving the perspectives of 47,974 participants on real or hypothetical privacy issues related to human genetic data. Bibliographic databases included MEDLINE, Web of Knowledge, and Sociological Abstracts. Three investigators independently screened studies against predetermined criteria and assessed risk of bias. The picture of genetic privacy that emerges from this systematic literature review is complex and riddled with gaps. When asked specifically are you worried about genetic privacy, the general public, patients, and professionals frequently said yes. In many cases, however, that question was posed poorly or only in the most general terms. While many participants expressed concern that genomic and medical information would be revealed to others, respondents frequently seemed to conflate privacy, confidentiality, control, and security. People varied widely in how much control they wanted over the use of data. They were more concerned about use by employers, insurers, and the government than they were about researchers and commercial entities. In addition, people are often willing to give up some privacy to obtain other goods. Importantly, little attention was paid to understanding the factor-sociocultural, relational, and media - that influence people\u27s opinions and decisions. Future investigations should explore in greater depth which concerns about genetic privacy are most salient to people and the social forces and contexts that influence those perceptions. It is also critical to identify the social practices that will make the collection and use of these data more trustworthy for participants as well as to identify the circumstances that lead people to set aside worries and decide to participate in research
