Perceptions of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the work of science journalists: global perspectives

    Get PDF
The article presents the results of a survey of science journalists from six world regions about their work during the COVID-19 pandemic. The responses show perception of increasing workload for most participants. Local scientists and peer-reviewed articles are the main sources. According to the respondents, scientists have become more available during the pandemic. The use of preprint articles was a frequent practice, but a considerable proportion declared they did not adopt different procedures when reporting them. Most also said they take fake news into account when writing their stories.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Using Lean to Counteract Complexity

    Get PDF
Based on a literature review and drawing from the experience of lean implementation in multipleconstruction projects, this paper explores the notion that simplicity and integrality might be crucial for anyproduction system seeking to develop competences against variations derived from both internal andexternal sources. A discussion using different systems thinking approaches is conducted to provide a betterunderstanding of the volatile behaviour of complex organizations. The aim is to encourage initiatives thataddress organizational simplicity and integrality in construction projects and, more important, to highlightthe important role of lean tools and principles for this endeavour

A Project-Based View of the Link Between Strategy, Structure and Lean Construction

Currently, there is a good understanding that companies do not obtain satisfactoryresults when lean practices are implemented alone. The benefits can only be realizedby making a substantial number of organizational changes, which in turn need to becoherent with the business strategy. However, contextual factors drive companies toadopt different business strategies, organizational structures and bundles ofproduction practices. Consequently, the sequence and content of businessdevelopment projects aimed to implement and test lean construction practices canvary according to each firm's internal characteristics and conjunctural needs. This paper argues that lean implementation is not an isolated event, but part of aneffort to create a strategy-structure alignment. Moreover, because leanimplementation is conducted through different internal projects, it is also argued thatprojects constitute the link between business strategy, organizational structure andlean processes. A model is proposed to explain the role that projects play ininterlinking strategy, structure and processes. In doing so, the authors hope to bringawareness to the bigger changes behind lean implementation and to the challenges ofbuilding "finely-tuned" organizations for specific missions

Counting Majorana zero modes in superconductors

A counting formula for computing the number of (Majorana) zero modes bound to topological point defects is evaluated in a gradient expansion for systems with charge-conjugation symmetry. This semi-classical counting of zero modes is applied to some examples that include graphene and a chiral p-wave superconductor in two-dimensional space. In all cases, we explicitly relate the counting of zero modes to Chern numbers.Comment: 21 pages, 3 figure

Non-invasive mechanical joint loading as an alternative model for osteoarthritic pain

OBJECTIVE: Mechanisms responsible for osteoarthritic pain remain poorly understood and current analgesic therapies are often insufficient. We have characterized and pharmacologically tested the pain phenotype of a non-invasive mechanical joint loading (MJL) model of osteoarthritis thus providing an alternative murine model for osteoarthritic pain. METHODS: The right knees of male mice (12-week-old, C57BL/6) were loaded at 9N or 11N (40 cycles, three times/week for two weeks). Behavioural measurements of limb disuse, mechanical and thermal hypersensitivity were acquired before MJL and monitored for six weeks post-loading. The severity of articular cartilage lesions was determined post-mortem with the OARSI grading scheme. Furthermore, 9N-loaded mice were treated for four weeks with diclofenac (10mg/kg), gabapentin (100mg/kg) or anti-Nerve Growth Factor (3mg/kg). RESULTS: Mechanical hypersensitivity and weight-bearing worsened significantly in 9N- and 11N-loaded mice two weeks post-loading compared to baseline values and non-loaded controls. Maximum OA scores of ipsilateral knees confirmed increased cartilage lesions in 9N- (2.8±0.2) and 11N-loaded (5.3±0.3) mice compared to non-loaded controls (1.0±0.0). Gabapentin and diclofenac restored pain behaviours to baseline values after two weeks of daily treatment, with gabapentin being more effective than diclofenac. A single injection of anti-NGF alleviated nociception two days after treatment and remained effective for two weeks with a second dose inducing stronger and more prolonged analgesia. CONCLUSION: Our results show that MJL induces OA lesions and a robust pain phenotype that can be reversed using analgesics known to alleviate OA pain in patients. This establishes the use of MJL as an alternative model for osteoarthritic pain
