    Acculturative Stress and Latino Depression: The Mediating Role of Behavioral and Cognitive Resources

    Although research has found that acculturative stress is significantly associated with adverse psychological adjustment among Latinos, the mechanism by which this relationship exists is not clearly understood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of behavioral and cognitive resources—active coping and self-efficacy, respectively—as mediators of the relationship between acculturative stress and depression among a sample of Latina/o adults (N = 469). Multiple mediator analysis indicated that active coping partially mediated the relationship between acculturative stress and depression symptom severity. The indirect relationship of acculturative stress to depression symptom severity through self-efficacy was not significant. The results suggest that acculturative stress directly relates to Latino psychological adjustment, and lower behavioral active coping partially accounts for this relationship. Results are discussed in the context of culturally based stress and coping models, wherein the relationship between stressors and subsequent psychological adjustment is influenced by the degree of fit between stressor demands and individuals’ resources. Implications for treatment and theory are discussed

    On points at infinity of real spectra of polynomial rings

    Let R be a real closed field and A=R[x_1,...,x_n]. Let sper A denote the real spectrum of A. There are two kinds of points in sper A : finite points (those for which all of |x_1|,...,|x_n| are bounded above by some constant in R) and points at infinity. In this paper we study the structure of the set of points at infinity of sper A and their associated valuations. Let T be a subset of {1,...,n}. For j in {1,...,n}, let y_j=x_j if j is not in T and y_j=1/x_j if j is in T. Let B_T=R[y_1,...,y_n]. We express sper A as a disjoint union of sets of the form U_T and construct a homeomorphism of each of the sets U_T with a subspace of the space of finite points of sper B_T. For each point d at infinity in U_T, we describe the associated valuation v_{d*} of its image d* in sper B_T in terms of the valuation v_d associated to d. Among other things we show that the valuation v_{d*} is composed with v_d (in other words, the valuation ring R_d is a localization of R_{d*} at a suitable prime ideal)

    On the Pierce-Birkhoff Conjecture

    This paper represents a step in our program towards the proof of the Pierce--Birkhoff conjecture. In the nineteen eighties J. Madden proved that the Pierce-Birkhoff conjecture for a ring Aisequivalenttoastatementaboutanarbitrarypairofpointsis equivalent to a statement about an arbitrary pair of points \alpha,\beta\in\sper\ Aandtheirseparatingideal and their separating ideal ;werefertothisstatementastheLocalPierce−Birkhoffconjectureat; we refer to this statement as the Local Pierce-Birkhoff conjecture at \alpha,\beta.Inthispaper,foreachpair. In this paper, for each pair (\alpha,\beta)with with ht()=\dim A,wedefineanaturalnumber,calledcomplexityof, we define a natural number, called complexity of (\alpha,\beta).Complexity0correspondstothecasewhenoneofthepoints. Complexity 0 corresponds to the case when one of the points \alpha,\betaismonomial;thiscasewasalreadysettledinalldimensionsinaprecedingpaper.Hereweintroduceanewconjecture,calledtheStrongConnectednessconjecture,andprovethatthestrongconnectednessconjectureindimensionn−1impliestheconnectednessconjectureindimensionninthecasewhen is monomial; this case was already settled in all dimensions in a preceding paper. Here we introduce a new conjecture, called the Strong Connectedness conjecture, and prove that the strong connectedness conjecture in dimension n-1 implies the connectedness conjecture in dimension n in the case when ht()islessthann−1.WeprovetheStrongConnectednessconjectureindimension2,whichgivestheConnectednessandthePierce−−Birkhoffconjecturesinanydimensioninthecasewhen is less than n-1. We prove the Strong Connectedness conjecture in dimension 2, which gives the Connectedness and the Pierce--Birkhoff conjectures in any dimension in the case when ht()lessthan2.Finally,weprovetheConnectedness(andhencealsothePierce−−Birkhoff)conjectureinthecasewhendimensionofAisequalto less than 2. Finally, we prove the Connectedness (and hence also the Pierce--Birkhoff) conjecture in the case when dimension of A is equal to ht()=3,thepair, the pair (\alpha,\beta)isofcomplexity1and is of complexity 1 and A$ is excellent with residue field the field of real numbers

    Discrimination, Acculturation, Acculturative Stress, and Latino Psychological Distress: A Moderated-Mediational Model

    Prior research has found that perceived discrimination is associated with adverse mental health outcomes among Latinos. However, the process by which this relationship occurs remains an understudied area. The present study investigated the role of acculturative stress in underlying the relationship between perceived discrimination and Latino psychological distress. Also examined was the ability of acculturation to serve as a moderator between perceived discrimination and acculturative stress. Among a sample of Latino adults (N = 669), moderated mediational analyses revealed that acculturative stress mediated the perceived discrimination-psychological distress relationship, and that the link between perceived discrimination and acculturative stress was moderated by Anglo behavioral orientation but not Latino behavioral orientation. The findings are discussed within a stress and coping perspective that identifies the psychological consequences associated with perceived discrimination and acculturative stress

    Against Game Theory

    People make choices. Often, the outcome depends on choices other people make. What mental steps do people go through when making such choices? Game theory, the most influential model of choice in economics and the social sciences, offers an answer, one based on games of strategy such as chess and checkers: the chooser considers the choices that others will make and makes a choice that will lead to a better outcome for the chooser, given all those choices by other people. It is universally established in the social sciences that classical game theory (even when heavily modified) is bad at predicting behavior. But instead of abandoning classical game theory, those in the social sciences have mounted a rescue operation under the name of “behavioral game theory.” Its main tool is to propose systematic deviations from the predictions of game theory, deviations that arise from character type, for example. Other deviations purportedly come from cognitive overload or limitations. The fundamental idea of behavioral game theory is that, if we know the deviations, then we can correct our predictions accordingly, and so get it right. There are two problems with this rescue operation, each of them is fatal. (1) For a chooser, contemplating the range of possible deviations, as there are many dozens, actually makes it exponentially harder to figure out a path to an outcome. This makes the theoretical models useless for modeling human thought or human behavior in general. (2) Modeling deviations are helpful only if the deviations are consistent, so that scientists (and indeed decision makers) can make predictions about future choices on the basis of past choices. But the deviations are not consistent. In general, deviations from classical models are not consistent for any individual from one task to the next or between individuals for the same task. In addition, people’s beliefs are in general not consistent with their choices. Accordingly, all hope is hollow that we can construct a general behavioral game theory. What can replace it?     Microaggressions and Psychological Functioning among High Achieving African-Americans: A Mixed-Methods Approach

    Racial microaggressions and their influence on mental health were examined among African American doctoral students and graduates of doctoral programs. Using a mixed-methods approach, the current study first identified the types of microaggressions reported by African American participants (N = 97) and then investigated the mechanism by which these experiences influence mental health over time with a separate sample of African Americans (N = 107). The qualitative findings revealed three categories of microaggressions including Assumption of Criminality/Second-Class Citizen, Underestimation of Personal Ability, and Cultural/racial Isolation. The quantitative analyses found support for a moderated-mediational model by which Underestimation of Personal Ability was associated with greater perceived stress at one-year follow-up, which in turn was related to greater depressive symptoms. Active coping was found to moderate the racial microaggression-perceived stress link such that individuals who endorse active coping behaviors reported lower perceived stress. These findings are discussed in terms of practical and theoretical implications regarding the role of racial micro-aggressions in the lives of high-achieving African Americans and the mechanisms by which these experiences contribute to mental health problems

    Can We Build Behavioral Game Theory?

    The way economists and other social scientists model how people make interdependent decisions is through the theory of games. Psychologists and behavioral economists, however, have established many deviations from the predictions of game theory. In response to these findings, a broad movement has arisen to salvage the core of game theory. Extant models of interdependent decision-making try to improve their explanatory domain by adding some corrective terms or limits. We will make the argument that this approach is misguided. For this approach to work, the deviations would have to be consistent. Drawing in part on our experimental results, we will argue that deviations from classical models are not consistent for any individual from one task to the next or between individuals for the same task. In turn, the problem of finding an equilibrium strategy is not easier but rather is exponentially more difficult. It does not seem that game theory can be repaired by adding corrective terms (such as consideration of personal characteristics, social norms, heuristic or bias terms, or cognitive limits on choice and learning). In what follows, we describe new methods for investigating interdependent decision-making. Our experimental results show that people do not choose consistently, do not hold consistent beliefs, and do not in general align actions and beliefs. We will show that experimental choices are inconsistent in ways that prevent us from drawing general characterizations of an individual’s choices or beliefs or of the general population\u27s choices and beliefs.     Polyanhydride particle platform for design of novel influenza vaccines

    Vaccines remain the most effective medical intervention to disease in which effective vaccines are available. Designing vaccines that elicit protective immunity while minimizing adverse events is difficult. Exacerbating the challenges of vaccine design is the increased emphasis on using pure preparation of antigens that alleviate safety concerns but also show decreased potency. Therefore the need for safe adjuvants to boost immunity of subunit immunizations is great. This work demonstrates the capability of a novel bio-erodible polyanhydride particle platform to enhance humoral and cellular immunity. Encapsulation of 25 ”g of Ovalbumin (Ova) antigen in microparticles elicits humoral immune responses equivalent to 1600, 400, and 100 ”g dosages of Ova. Characterizing the persistence of the nanoparticle platform shows that in vivo persistence and immunomodulatory activity can be tailored by altering copolymer chemistry. Polyanhydride nanoparticle vaccines against Ova show an increased ability to expand CD8+ T cells as compared to Alum and soluble Ova. These same polyanhydride nanoparticle vaccines expand CD4+ T cells and promote a T follicular helper (CXCR5high PD-1high) cell phenotype important for germinal center formation. The polyanhydride platform designed vaccines against H5N1 using a stabilized trimeric H5 antigen were evaluated in multiple dose and route regimens and elicit neutralizing antibody activity and expanded CD4+ cellular recall responses when administered subcutaneously. These results demonstrate that the polyanhydride particle platform can be used to effectively enhance immune responses in subunit immunizations
