A historic cohort study of kidney transplant recipients with a failed graft was conducted to examine the associations between sleep disorders and kidney transplant outcomes. Adult kidney transplant recipients who were transplanted and failed or died with a functioning graft during the designated study time period (January 1, 1997 to September 1, 2015, inclusive) were included (n=299). The primary independent variables, any sleep disorder and any sleep-disordered breathing disorders, were defined through a diagnosis in a subject’s medical record. Transplant outcomes included: death with a functioning graft, graft survival time, and patient survival time after graft failure. Chi-square statistics were used to compare the proportion of death with a functioning graft between subjects with versus without any sleep disorder and to help inform the censoring approach for graft survival time. Kaplan Meier survival curves were used to examine the relationship of any sleep disorder to survival time. Cox regression models, examined the adjusted relationship of any sleep disorder to the outcomes, graft survival time and patient survival time after graft failure. Sub-analyses also examined associations between sleep-disordered breathing disorders and these outcomes. The prevalence of any sleep disorder in this cohort was 20%, with the majority consisting of sleep apnea diagnoses, a sleep-disordered breathing disorder. Given a statistically significant (p≤0.01, adjusted model) sleep disorder by transplant-year heterogeneity, Cox regression models were stratified by transplant-year for the graft survival outcome. Having a sleep disorder, namely, sleep apnea, was associated with a statistically significantly increased risk of graft failure or cardiovascular related death with a functioning graft among patients transplanted in 2009-2015 (adjusted HR=2.94, p In a single-center cohort of kidney transplant recipients with a failed graft, a sleep apnea diagnosis increased the risk of graft loss nearly three-fold among patients transplanted between 2009-2015. Further research is needed to better understand this relationship and whether prevention strategies, including treating sleep apnea, might increase longevity in kidney transplant patients

    Get PDF
With the emergence of social enterprises, the number of support services to foster social enterprises’ development has also risen. Therefore, a new type of incubators, that focusses on supporting those organizations which aim at alleviating environmental, economic and societal problems has been established. This master thesis is exploring how such incubators influence the development of social enterprises. The incubation process is analyzed through the lens of social enterprises through a qualitative study approach based on semi-structured interviews with founders of social enterprises who have been or are currently being part of the incubation program of Project Together, the incubator studied. The study shows that founders of social enterprises use incubators to enhance their personal development as well as the development of their businesses. Thereby, coaching and the access to networks are perceived as the most important aspects of incubation. Furthermore, incubation does not have a direct influence on the most challenging aspects of social enterprises which are achieving financial stability, retaining as well as acquiring employees and developing leadership skills. However, by enhancing the personal development of its incubatees, incubators provide social entrepreneurs with the required skills to enhance communication with stakeholders such as investors and employees. This study contributes to theory, since it establishes a framework explaining the incubation process and its influences on the social enterprises. The framework also helps managers of incubators to better tailor their offer to social enterprises.

An Analysis of Product Dimensions Out of Specification as Quality Claim Improvement Activity : Application of 8D Method in the Injection Plastic Industry

    Get PDF
Every company tries to find ways to maintain its market position in an increasingly competitive business environment. In order to be successful, companies need to achieve their objectives and goals to make their vision a reality while adhering to their mission. Company claims report in the few years still hasn’t solved yet. Such complaints are significant because customersatisfaction can only be improved if the root causes of the problem is clearly identified. In the plastic industry that produces parts for the automotive industry, a systematic method named 8D is used to analyze product conformity to specifications. The 8D method consists of nine disciplines problem-solving. The original purpose of 8D method was to eliminate the defect causing the problem, thus restoring customer satisfaction and level up the quality level of the company. This research established the suitability of the 8D for complaint settlement. 8D involves teamwork to solve the problem and using a 9-step structural approach. This case study resulted that the 8D is effective. The total customer claims at the end of last year until this year in Dec 2020 totaled zero (0) and process rejection for incorrect dimensions were reduced from 0.07 % to 0.01%

Interaction Between Departments: Strategies for Improving Interdepartmental Collaboration through Communication

Collaboration within libraries can be a challenge; with specific jobs and areas of expertise, it is easy to focus only inward. But collaborating with the staff in other departments may help librarians be more effective information providers. The University of New Mexico Libraries has tried to meet this challenge by instituting formal and informal communication mechanisms. One-time learning opportunities and groups that meet regularly were created between different departments. This chapter will describe the ways in which the University of New Mexico Libraries organized these events and groups, which methods met with the best success and participation, and advice on how to apply these suggestions in other libraries

Incidental Detection of Onchocerca Microfilariae in Donkeys (Equus asinus) in Italy: Report of Four Cases

    Get PDF
This paper reports the occurrence for the first time in Italy of autochthonous Onchocerca infection in donkeys. Four jennies, bred on the same farm, were referred to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of Pisa for a check-up on ovarian activity (n = 3) or for veterinary support during the delivery (n = 1). Microfilariae were incidentally detected during the blood smear examination of one jenny. Peripheral blood samples were then collected from the other three jennies and the presence of microfilariae was investigated by Knott's test. Circulating unsheathed microfilariae were identified in all the animals. The level of microfilaraemia was between 1 and 31 microfilariae in 2 mL of blood. Hematological changes showed moderate eosinophilia in one case or both remarkable eosinophilia and basophilia in another case. Based on molecular findings by PCR and sequencing, the microfilariae showed 98% sequence similarity with Onchocerca sp. in the NCBI GenBank database (Accession No.: MK541848.1). The present report provides evidence that Onchocerca is an etiological agent of parasitic infection in donkeys in Italy. Our findings highlight the importance of screening in donkeys for Onchocerca even in the absence of clinical indications

A mold is a tool for printing plastic products. The way it works is by installing the mold on a plastic injection machine, and then the machine does the injection process to put molten plastic material into the mold. In the mold, there is a cavity that matches the shape of the product to be made. Before a mold can be used, it must be designed and manufactured. ATK Polytechnic of Yogyakarta has one injection molding machine with several molds available. The available molds do not yet have a design based on various information, analysis, and calculations, so this research will make a mold design that is expected to be a guideline for making plastic injection molds and is expected to be able to analyze the needs for cavities, gates, ejector systems, cooling system. In this study, the design and calculation of mold construction, including the cavity, parting line, gate, ejector, cavity plate, core plate, runner, and cooling, were discussed. The purpose of this study is to determine how to design a basic mold construction with a two-mold plate system, with the resulting product being a tensile test specimen. The result of this tensile test specimen mold design is a mold base design drawing with a mold size of 350mm x 500mm x 255mm, the number of cavities being 4 cavities per mold, and the volume of the tensile test specimen mold being 33.0122 cm3

It is 2am. A professor wakes up with a new direction for her research; she must immediately learn about bioethics. In a dorm a student is finally ready to begin a paper on Cuba. Where do they turn? The library web site presents them with a bewildering array of resources and no librarian on hand to serve as intermediary. How can librarians facilitate research in their absence? What interfaces can be designed to educate users in their search? What metadata is needed to enable accurate retrieval? What is the librarian’s role in the increasingly indirectly-mediated information-seeking environment? Can the reference interview be effectively translated into a search interface? This paper describes a step towards resolving these issues by creating an on-line tool to assist users in selecting the database(s) most germane to their research needs
