The End of the World
Our fear of the world ending, like our fear of the dark, is ancient, deep-seated and perennial. It crosses boundaries of space and time, recurs in all human communities and finds expression in every aspect of cultural production – from pre-historic cave paintings to high-tech computer games. This book examines historical and imaginary scenarios of Apocalypse, the depiction of its likely triggers, and imagined landscapesin the aftermath of global destruction. Its discussion moves effortlessly from classic novels including Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four and Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake, to blockbuster films such as Blade Runner, Armageddon and The Terminator. The author also takes into account religious doctrine, scientific research and the visual arts to create a penetrating, multi-disciplinarystudy that provides profound insight into one of Western culture’s darkest and most enduring preoccupations

Estimating the prevalence of female genital mutilation in Portugal
UID/SOC/04647/2013OBJECTIVES: Due to globalized migratory processes, female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) has spread to other countries, including countries in Europe, where, with a few exceptions, it remains a concealed problem. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first national extensive study to estimate the prevalence of FGM/C in Portugal. STUDY DESIGN: Prevalence estimation. METHODS: Using extrapolation of country-of-origin prevalence data and the 2011 Census data, this study estimated: the prevalence of FGM/C in Portugal among women of reproductive age (15-49 years) and among all women aged ≥15 years; and the number of girls aged <15 years living in Portugal who have undergone or will probably undergo FGM/C. RESULTS: It is estimated that 6576 women aged ≥15 years living in Portugal have undergone FGM/C, with cases distributed unevenly throughout the national territory. In addition, it is estimated that 1830 girls aged <15 years living in Portugal have undergone or are likely to undergo FGM/C. CONCLUSIONS: This study estimated that more than 6000 women living in Portugal have undergone FGM/C, and many girls remain at risk. These two groups need different types of interventions. Awareness of the number and geographical dispersion of cases of FGM/C will enable more informed and targeted definition of public health policies for protection of females who have undergone or are at risk of undergoing FGM/C.authorsversionpublishe

Understanding the role of insular African mangroves as nursery areas for the early life stages of fish
A maior riqueza
Mangroves have been recognized worldwide as crucial nursery areas for fish larvae and juveniles.
Although critical for managing coastal fish stocks, information about larval fish communities in African
island mangroves is scarce and these potential nursery areas in São Tomé Island have remained
understudied. Fish larvae were collected over four weeks from October to November 2020 using light
traps, passive plankton tows and seine nets in a multi-habitat approach. To overcome species
identification constraints, both morphology and molecular analysis were taken under consideration for
specimen identification. A total of 4,010 larvae were caught across all methods belonging to 16 families
or 27 species. Few species dominated the ichthyoplankton community of which, the most abundant
families were Cichlidae – the invasive Oreochromis mossambicus (47%) - and Gobiidae (43%),
constituted by seven taxa. The remaining 14 families only accounted for about 10% of total larvae
captured, with three new species were recorded for the first time in these mangroves and three more
species are new records for São Tomé Island. Taxa composition and richness varied considerably
between sampling techniques. The highest taxa richness and diversity were recorded in the Malanza
mangrove (27 species) while Praia das Conchas (9 species) was not able to sustain similar levels of
biodiversity. Differences on fish larvae composition were found within the studied mangroves, depicting
a strong influence by habitat type and a relative position within each system. These community
composition patterns were marginally influenced by environmental variables such as water temperature
and dissolved oxygen. Overall, a total of eleven taxa have commercial interest and their presence as
juveniles and larvae in São Tomé mangroves reinforces the need for conservation of these ecosystems
with direct implications for the sustainability of the local fisheries
Health care costs of domestic violence against women – evidence from Portugal
Our main objective is to estimate the additional health care costs to the Portuguese National Health Service
(NHS) due to domestic violence against women. We collected information through a survey addressed to
health care centres’ female users. Both victims and non-victims of violence were inquired. We estimate
costs according to five different groups – consultation costs, health care treatment and therapeutic costs,
costs of complementary and diagnostic exams, drugs costs and transport costs. The estimations have been
split into two perspectives – the NHS perspective (public perspective) and private perspective of inquired
women (out of pocket payments).
The timeframe of our calculations is one year, referring to all costs generated by domestic violence
situations in the last twelve months. Essentially costs were estimated through the product of total number of
episodes by the average estimated price per episode. Additionally, for the private costs, we also considered
the costs originated by income losses, the opportunity cost of time spent on health care treatments and the
work inability caused by sickness.
The results suggest that the victims of domestic violence’s additional demand for health care is
valued €140 per annum, that is about 22% higher than health care costs of non-victims. These results match
those of similar studies for the United States, taking account of per capita differences in health care
spending. A large proportion (90%) of the additional costs associated with domestic violence is supported
by the NHS, where consultations and drugs are the most important contributors of such costs. Health
consequences of domestic violence result from losses in quality of life and worst health status of victims
and correspond to additional permanent economic costs of domestic violence episodes
In HĂ©lia Correia’s contemporary version, women reproduce and highlight some of the signs already present in Greek tragedy and epic poetry in what concerns the problematic of female sexuality and passion, as countervailing forces to the male warlike instinct, which they eventually overthrow. The reading presented here focuses on different aspects of the juxtaposition of the sexes in the context of war: namely, the dynamic between mother and daughter as agents of female solidarity in confrontation with the male warlike imperative; the mother-son relationship as inscribed in the filial oedipal dilemma of choice between the warrior father and the atavistically loved mother; the question of maternity/paternity and of the voluntary or refused sacrifice of sons and daughters to the interests of war; and the problem of the passional representation of the enemy as an object of desire and figuration of the ideal of the beloved.
