Leadership and Corporate Social Responsibility : Mapping the Conceptual Structure of Research

    Get PDF
Purpose: The aim of the study is to identify, with the use of co-word analysis, and explore leading thematic areas in research investigating intersections between leadership and corporate social responsibility. The research process is focused around the following study questions: (1) What are the leading thematic areas in research on intersections between leadership and corporate social responsibility?, (2) Are there similarities and differences between leading topics identified through co-word analysis with the findings from previous studies employing systematic literature review and research topic profiling methodologies? (3) What is the usefulness of co-word analysis for mapping leading thematic areas comparing to systematic literature reviews and research topic profiling?Design/methodology/approach: The study employs the method of keywords co-occurrence analysis, which is a type of co-word analysis, categorized among science mapping methods. The bibliometric data for analysis are retrieved from Scopus. The analysis and visualization of keywords co-occurrence is supported by VOSviewer software.Findings: The four following thematic areas have been identified in research production on intersections between leadership and corporate social responsibility: (1) sustainable strategy and sustainable development, (2) leadership and ethics, (3) humans in the organisationalcontext, and (4) responsible leaders in sustainable and responsible organisations. Thematic areas identified through co-word analysis show similarities with the findings from previous mapping studies conducted with the use of systematic literature review and research topic profiling. More similarity is visible in the case of research topic profiling, which likewise co-word analysis is categorized among bibliometric methods. As a method used for mapping thematic structure of a research field, co-word analysis is found to show more advantages than research topic profiling and systematic literature reviews.Research and methodological implications: The study contributes to the body of knowledge through identifying leading thematic areas in research on intersections between leadership and corporate social responsibility. It is also valuable from the methodological point of view as it gives the chance to discuss advantages and disadvantages of various research methods employed for mapping the conceptual structure of a research field.Originality/value: The added value of the study is mostly of theoretical and methodological character. The study seems to be the first attempt to map the conceptual structure of the analysed research field with the use of keywords co-occurrence analysis. It also compares and contrasts the findings from various methods used for mapping the conceptual structure of the field.Paper type: Review

CSR Case Studies: Identifying Core References with Direct Citation Analysis

    Get PDF
Purpose: The aim of the paper is to identify, through citation analysis, the core references employing case study  methodology to explore CSR issues in various organizational contexts. The research process is focused on the following study questions: (1) What are the core references analysingCSR case studies? (2) What are the research contexts of the top rated case studies in CSR?Methodology: The study employs the method of direct citation analysis, which is categorized among the science mapping, bibliometric methods. As the method of citation analysis favours older publications, which have had more opportunities to receive a higher number of citations, the traditional approach based on identifying the most cited publications issupplemented with the analysis of the normalized number of citations, which mitigates such a bias. The analysis and visualization of findings are supported with VOSviewer software.Findings: The analysis has identified the core references among case studies exploring corporate social responsibility issues. Then, the identified publications have been explored and their research contexts have been recognized. The core case studies in CSR show their particular interest in such contexts and issues as: (1) heavy industries (e.g. mining and oil industries); (2) supply chains; (3) various types of businesses, including large companies, SMEs, and family businesses; (4) the perspectives of important stakeholders such as governments and NGOs; and recently (5) the food industry.Research and practical implications: Through mapping scientific output of CSR case studies, the paper contributes first and foremost to the development of management theory. It points out the most recognized publications, to be considered as role models for the followers. It may also provide inspiration for further exploration of corporate social responsibility practices with the use of case study methodology.Originality/value: The uniqueness of the paper derives from the fact that CSR case studies have not been yet mapped as a research field. Moreover, the employment of bibliometric methodology enabling objective analysis of a large number of publications and their attributes, and effective visualization techniques increase value of the study.Paper type: Review

This issue of Journal of Corporate Responsibility and Leadership(JCR&L) focuses its attention on innovations in corporate social responsibility, NGOs operations and public management. The business level perspective includes such aspects as: corporate responsibility to employees in case of company insolvency, and the manifestations and measures of frugal innovations. The NGOs and public perspective covers the cases of innovations related to professional reintegration of people with substance disorders (in Portugal), preconceptualization of the welfare states concept (in Sweden) and financing higher education institutions (in Vietnam)

Case Study Methodology in Research on Corporate Social Responsibility: General Publication Profiling and Identifying Research Contexts

    Get PDF
Purpose: The aim of the paper is to profile the scientific output in research on corporate social responsibility employing the methodology of case study. The research process is focused around the following research questions: (1) How has the research productivity in CSR case studies been changing? (2) What are the most productive contributors (countries, research institutions, source titles and scholars) to the scientific output? (3) What are the most popular contexts (geography, industry, company type) of CSR studies employing case study ethodology?  Design/methodology/approach: The study employed the method of research profiling, which is categorized among bibliometric descriptive studies. The standard version of general publication profiling, comprising four aspects used to describe the scientific output in the research field i.e.: country profiling, research institution profiling, source title profilingand author profiling, was supplemented with identification of the research contexts of CSR case studies. Research profiling was supported with citation analysis and co-authorship analysis, representing science mapping methods. VOSviewer software was employed to conduct citation analysis and co-authorship analysis and visualize the findings.Findings: The studies employing case study analysis methodology to explore corporate social responsibility issues are still within the growth phase of the research field life cycle. Research profiling of the most productive countries, research institutions, and authors indicates the leading position of the United Kingdom. The followers are both developed nations, mainly Anglo-Saxon countries (the United States, Australia, Canada) and European continental countries (Spain, Italy, Denmark), as well as developing nations (India, Indonesia, China). Source titles profiling points out the following journals of the highest prominence publishing CSR case studies: Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Cleaner Production, and Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management. The CSR case studies are embedded in the contexts of both developed and developing nations. The mining industry is found to be the sector attracting the most attention of researchers. Other industries which are often analysed in CSR studies include: tourism and hospitality, food, banking and financial services, chemical, forestry, anufacturing, public health, fashion and textile, oil industries. Research implications: Through bibliometric analysis of case  studies in corporate social responsibility, the study contributes first and foremost to management theory. Firstly, it provides the scholars interested in the field with a detailed map identifying key contributors (countries, research institutions and authors), which may be useful for establishing research collaboration. Secondly, analysing leading source titles is of high practical value for the authors considering journals for submitting their works. Finally, discovering the most often explored contexts of CSR case studies (in regard to geography, industries, and company types), on the one hand, indicates main research interests in the field, but on the other hand may be an indication to find interesting gaps to be covered in prospective case studies. Originality/value: The originality of the study derives from the fact that scientific output including CSR related case studies has not been mapped, so far. The employed methodology, including combination of the bibliometric descriptive approach represented by the research profiling framework and quantitative science mapping methods (citation and co-authorship analysis) creates the unique value of the study. Paper type: Review.
