    Estimation of age-specific rates of reactivation and immune boosting of the varicella zoster virus

    Studies into the impact of vaccination against the varicella zoster virus (VZV) have increasingly focused on herpes zoster (HZ), which is believed to be increasing in vaccinated populations with decreasing infection pressure. This idea can be traced back to Hope-Simpson's hypothesis, in which a person's immune status determines the likelihood that he/she will develop HZ. Immunity decreases over time, and can be boosted by contact with a person experiencing varicella (exogenous boosting) or by a reactivation attempt of the virus (endogenous boosting). Here we use transmission models to estimate age-specific rates of reactivation and immune boosting, exogenous as well as endogenous, using zoster incidence data from the Netherlands (2002–2011, n = 7026). The boosting and reactivation rates are estimated with splines, enabling these quantities to be optimally informed by the data. The analyses show that models with high levels of exogenous boosting and estimated or zero endogenous boosting, constant rate of loss of immunity, and reactivation rate increasing with age (to more than 5% per year in the elderly) give the best fit to the data. Estimates of the rates of immune boosting and reactivation are strongly correlated. This has important implications as these parameters determine the fraction of the population with waned immunity. We conclude that independent evidence on rates of immune boosting and reactivation in persons with waned immunity are needed to robustly predict the impact of varicella vaccination on the incidence of HZ.PIENTER2 serological stud

    Pedotransfer functions to estimate water retention parameters of soils in northeastern Brazil.

    Abstract: Pedotransfer functions (PTF) were developed to estimate the parameters of the van Genuchten model (1980) to describe soil water retention curves. The data came from various sources, mainly from studies conducted by universities in Northeast Brazil, by the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) and by a corporation for the development of the São Francisco and Parnaíba river basins (Codevasf), totaling 786 retention curves, which were divided into two data sets: 85 % for the development of PTFs, and 15 % for testing and validation, considered independent data. Aside from the development of general PTFs for all soils together, specific PTFs were developed for the soil classes Ultisols, Oxisols, Entisols, and Alfisols by multiple regression techniques, using a stepwise procedure (forward and backward) to select the best predictors. Two types of PTFs were developed: the first included all predictors (soil density, proportions of sand, silt, clay, and organic matter), and the second only the proportions of sand, silt and clay. The evaluation of adequacy of the PTFs was based on the correlation coefficient (R) and Willmott index (d). To evaluate the PTF for the moisture content at specific pressure heads, we used the root mean square error (RMSE). The PTF- predicted retention curve is relatively poor, except for the residual water content. The inclusion of organic matter as a PTF predictor improved the prediction of parameter (alfa) of van Genuchten. The performance of soil-class-specific PTFs was not better than of the general PTF. Except for the water content of saturated soil estimated by particle size distribution, the tested models for water content prediction at specific pressure heads proved satisfactory. Predictions of water content at pressure heads more negative than -0.6 m, using a PTF considering particle size distribution, are only slightly lower than those obtained by PTFs including bulk density and organic matter content. Resumo: Foram desenvolvidas funções de pedotransferência (PTFs) para estimar os parâmetros do modelo de van Genuchten (1980), utilizados para descrever curvas de retenção de água no solo. Os dados usados foram provenientes de diversas fontes, principalmente de estudos realizados na Região Nordeste pelas universidades, pela Embrapa e Codevasf, totalizando 786 curvas de retenção, que foram divididas em dois conjuntos de dados: 85 %, para desenvolvimento das PTFs, e 15 %, para teste e validação, considerados como dados independentes. Além do desenvolvimento das PTFs de caráter geral para todos os solos conjuntamente, desenvolveram-se PTFs específicas para as classes Argissolos, Latossolos, Neossolos e Planossolos, utilizando técnicas de regressão múltipla, com o uso do procedimento stepwise (forward e backward), para selecionar os melhores preditores. Dois tipos de PTFs foram desenvolvidos: o primeiro inclui todos os preditores, densidade do solo, teores de areia, silte, argila e de matéria orgânica, e o segundo, apenas com os teores de areia, silte e argila. A avaliação da adequação das PTFs foi com base no coeficiente de correlação (R) e índice de Willmott (d). Para avaliar as PTFs, para o teor de água em potenciais matriciais específicos, utilizou-se a raiz do erro médio quadrado (RMSE). A predição da curva de retenção por PTF é relativamente fraca, exceto para o teor de água residual. A inclusão do teor de matéria orgânica como preditor da PTF melhora a predição do parâmetro (alfa) de van Genuchten. Não houve melhora de desempenho das PTFs específicas por classe de solo, em comparação com uma PTF geral. Exceto no caso do teor de água do solo saturado, estimado pela distribuição granulométrica, modelos para a predição do teor de água em potenciais matriciais específicos são bons. Predições do teor de água em potenciais matriciais mais negativos do que -0,6 m, usando uma PTF contendo a distribuição granulométrica, são somente um pouco inferiores àquelas obtidas por PTFs, que incluem densidade do solo e teor de matéria orgânica

    As informações dos parâmetros hidráulicos de solo constituem em dados importantes em estudos com modelagem do fluxo de água, transporte de solutos ou contaminantes bem como em simulação de crescimento vegetal. O objetivo desse estudo foi otimizar os parâmetros hidráulicos do solo pelo método de modelagem inversa. Os solos pertencem a duas áreas experimentais conduzidos em área comercial de cana-de-açúcar. O programa PEST (Parameter ESTimation) foi utilizado com o intuito de minimizar a soma dos quadrados dos resíduos entre o conteúdo de água no solo medido nos dois experimentos pelo método gravimétrico, com o conteúdo de água no solo simulada pelo modelo SWAP/WOFOST. A variação do índice estatístico RMSE entre o conteúdo de água no solo medida em campo com o simulado pelo modelo foi semelhante em ambos os locais e em média apresentou valor de 0,0281 e 0,0274 m3 m-3. O método de modelagem inversa realizado pelo programa PEST mostrou ser eficaz na otimização dos parâmetros hidráulicos do solo em ambos os locais de estudo

    Exactly Soluble Model for Umklapp Scattering at Quantum-Hall Edges

    We consider the low-energy, long-wave-length excitations of a reconstructed quantum-Hall edge where three branches of chiral one-dimensional edge excitations exist. We find that, in addition to forward scattering between the three edge-excitation branches, Coulomb interaction gives rise to a novel Umklapp-type scattering process that cannot be accounted for within a generalized Tomonaga-Luttinger model.     Structure-Sensitive Mechanism of Nanographene Failure

    The response of a nanographene sheet to external stresses is considered in terms of a mechanochemical reaction. The quantum chemical realization of the approach is based on a coordinate-of-reaction concept for the purpose of introducing a mechanochemical internal coordinate (MIC) that specifies a deformational mode. The related force of response is calculated as the energy gradient along the MIC, while the atomic configuration is optimized over all of the other coordinates under the MIC constant-pitch elongation. The approach is applied to the benzene molecule and (5, 5) nanographene. A drastic anisotropy in the microscopic behavior of both objects under elongation along a MIC has been observed when the MIC is oriented either along or normally to the C-C bonds chain.     Coulomb effects on the quantum transport of a two-dimensional electron system in periodic electric and magnetic fields

    The magnetoresistivity tensor of an interacting two-dimensional electron system with a lateral and unidirectional electric or magnetic modulation, in a perpendicular quantizing magnetic field, is calculated within the Kubo formalism. The influence of the spin splitting of the Landau bands and of the density of states (DOS) on the internal structure of the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations is analyzed. The Coulomb electron - electron interaction is responsible for strong screening and exchange effects and is taken into account in a screened Hartree-Fock approximation, in which the exchange contribution is calculated self-consistently with the DOS at the Fermi level. This approximation describes both the exchange enhancement of the spin splitting and the formation of compressible edge strips, unlike the simpler Hartree and Hartree-Fock approximations, which yield either the one or the other.Comment: 20 pages, revtex, 7 ps figures, to appear in Phys.     Language motivation in a reconfigured Europe: access, identity, autonomy

    In this paper, I propose that we need to develop an appropriate set of conceptual tools for examining motivational issues pertaining to linguistic diversity, mobility and social integration in a rapidly changing and expanding Europe. I begin by drawing on research that has begun to reframe the concept of integrative motivation in the context of theories of self and identity. Expanding the notion of identity, I discuss the contribution of the Council of Europe's European Language Portfolio in promoting a view of motivation as the development of a plurilingual European identity and the enabling of access and mobility across a multilingual Europe. Next, I critically examine the assumption that the individual pursuit of a plurilingual identity is unproblematic, by highlighting the social context in which motivation and identity are constructed and embedded. To illuminate the role of this social context, I explore three inter-related theoretical frameworks: poststructuralist perspectives on language motivation as 'investment'; sociocultural theory; and theories of autonomy in language education. I conclude with the key message that, as with autonomy, language motivation today has an inescapably political dimension of which we need to take greater account in our research and pedagogical practice

    Murine iNKT cells are depleted by liver damage via activation of P2RX7

    Invariant natural killer T cells (iNKT) constitute up to 50% of liver lymphocytes and contribute to immunosurveillance as well as pathogenesis of the liver. Systemic activation of iNKT cells induces acute immune-mediated liver injury. However, how tissue damage events regulate iNKT cell function and homeostasis remains unclear. We found that specifically tissue-resident iNKT cells in liver and spleen express the tissue-damage receptor P2RX7 and the P2RX7-activating ectoenzyme ARTC2. P2RX7 expression restricted formation of iNKT cells in the liver suggesting that liver iNKT cells are actively restrained under homeostatic conditions. Deliberate activation of P2RX7 in vivo by exogenous NAD resulted in a nearly complete iNKT cell ablation in liver and spleen in a P2RX7-dependent manner. Tissue damage generated by acetaminophen-induced liver injury reduced the number of iNKT cells in the liver. The tissue-damage-induced iNKT cell depletion was driven by P2RX7 and localized to the site of injury, as iNKT cells in the spleen remained intact. The depleted liver iNKT cells reconstituted only slowly compared to other lymphocytes such as regulatory T cells. These findings suggest that tissue-damage-mediated depletion of iNKT cells acts as a feedback mechanism to limit iNKT cell-induced pathology resulting in the establishment of a tolerogenic environment

    Desenvolvimento de funções de pedotransferência para regiões do Nordeste brasileiro.

    Modelos para simulação do fluxo de água no solo e previsão de produtividade de culturas requerem informações sobre parâmetros das curvas de retenção e condutividade hidráulica do solo. Funções de pedotransferência (PTFs) se constituem numa alternativa para obtenção dessas informações, a partir de dados de textura e estrutura disponíveis em levantamentos de solos. Neste trabalho, foram ajustadas PTFs para os parâmetros do modelo de van Genuchten (vG), utilizando dados de 838 curvas de retenção de diferentes locais do Nordeste. As PTFs apresentaram boa qualidade de ajuste para os parâmetros Tetar e Tetas em contraste com a baixa capacidade preditiva para loga e n. Tais resultados sugerem a viabilidade do seu uso em modelos de simulação do balanço hídrico simplificado e para algumas aplicações práticas de irrigação. No entanto, para uso em modelos complexos de fluxo de água é importante avaliar a sensibilidade das variáveis prognósticas (produtividade agrícola, concentração de solutos) a variações nos parâmetros de vG. A alta variabilidade observada tanto nas propriedades morfológicas como nos parâmetros de vG para a região de estudo sugere o agrupamento dos dados em classes texturais ou tipos de solos
