    Bilateral intracranial beta activity during forced and spontaneous movements in a 6-OHDA hemi-PD rat model

    Cortico-basal ganglia beta oscillations (13–30 Hz) are assumed to be involved in motor impairments in Parkinson’s Disease (PD), especially in bradykinesia and rigidity. Various studies have utilized the unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) rat PD model to further investigate PD and test novel treatments. However, a detailed behavioral and electrophysiological characterization of the model, including analyses of popular PD treatments such as DBS, has not been documented in the literature. We hence challenged the 6-OHDA rat hemi-PD model with a series of experiments (i.e., cylinder test, open field test, and rotarod test) aimed at assessing the motor impairments, analyzing the effects of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), and identifying under which conditions excessive beta oscillations occur. We found that 6-OHDA hemi-PD rats presented an impaired performance in all experiments compared to the sham group, and DBS could improve their overall performance. Across all the experiments and behaviors, the power in the high beta band was observed to be an important biomarker for PD as it showed differences between healthy and lesioned hemispheres and between 6-OHDA-lesioned and sham rats. This all shows that the 6-OHDA hemi-PD model accurately represents many of the motor and electrophysiological symptoms of PD and makes it a useful tool for the pre-clinical testing of new treatments when low β (13–21 Hz) and high β (21–30 Hz) frequency bands are considered separately

    Dopaminergic computations for perceptual decisions

    Studies linking the brain's dopamine signals with learning and decision making have enjoyed enormous progress using predominantly value-based decision-making tasks. However, recent studies have demonstrated pervasive dopamine signaling also during perceptual decision making. These signals have been shown to depend on both feedback and perceptual parameters such as perceptual decision confidence and sensory statistics. Here, we review recent studies investigating dopamine signals in simple and complex forms of perceptual decision tasks across species and dopaminergic circuits. We discuss how reinforcement learning (RL) models can account for key aspects of learning during perceptual decision making and its dopaminergic underpinnings, thus bridging the gap with the literature on dopamine in value-based decisions. Finally, we propose that RL may provide a promising framework to address current challenges in the dopamine literature, such as explaining the function of its heterogeneous responses and its role in learning from naive to expert

    The effect of turbulence in brain dynamics information transfer measured with magnetoencephalography

    Fast, efficient information transfer is essential for the brain to ensure survival. As recently shown in functional magnetic resonance imaging with high spatial resolution, turbulence appears to offer a fundamental way to facilitate energy and information transfer across spatiotemporal scales in brain dynamics. However, given that this imaging modality is comparably slow and not directly linked with neuronal activity, here we investigated the existence of turbulence in fast whole-brain neural dynamics measured with magnetoencephalography (MEG). The coarse spatial observations in MEG necessitated that we created and validated a empirical measure of turbulence. We found that the measure of edge-centric metastability perfectly detected turbulence in a ring of non-local coupled oscillators where the ground-truth was analytically known, even at a coarse spatial scale of observations. This allowed us to use this measure in the spatially coarse, empirical large-scale MEG data from 89 human participants. We demonstrated turbulence in fast neuronal dynamics and used this to quantify information transfer in the brain.     Impressions of the scientific training in fishery and aquaculture biotechnology in Mar del Plata, Argentina: Communication, networking, and multidisciplinary research

    In this Letter, we report the outcomes of the first edition of the ‘Marine Biotechnology and Aquaculture for Sustainable Development’ training that took place in August 2022 in Mar del Plata, Argentina. We learned about the current fishery and aquaculture production in South America, with emphasis to the recent program ‘Pampa Azul’ released by the Argentinean authorities. Lectures of recent studies that contributed to the Argentine marine biotechnology and the prospects of fishery and aquaculture technology in the Amazon region were given to the participants. The importance of circular bioeconomy within the context of fishery and aquaculture was highlighted in detail via seminary discussions. At the end of the Letter, participants gave a glimpse into the lessons learned from the training, illustrating that interdisciplinary communication and face-to-face networking are essential attributes to expand collaborative research in the South American countries.Fil: Paggi Matos, Ângelo.
