Overview of Academic Studies on Smart Care for the Elderly and Comprehensive Solution Design
Due to historical reasons and urbanization progress, demographic development change has promoted China to enter an aging society and the elders’ demand for medical care and health care has increased rapidly. Meanwhile, the rapid development of information technology is driving the “Smart Care for the Elderly” model which is based on the Internet and regards the internet of things as the medium which has gradually developed into a complete a system, and a series of solutions have been formed. This paper started with the analysis of China’s elderly population status quo, combed academic studies on domestic and foreign “Smart Care for the Elderly” and applications in recent fifteen years and explored how to build a comprehensive “Smart Care for Elderly” solution with improved functions which incorporates such key elements as information technology and social sciences
Arbitrating Traffic Contention for Power Saving with Multiple PSM Clients
Data transmission over WiFi quickly drains the batteries of mobile devices. Although the IEEE 802.11 standards provide power save mode (PSM) to help mobile devices conserve energy, PSM fails to bring expected benefits in many real scenarios. In particular, when multiple PSM mobile devices associate to a single access point (AP), PSM does not work well under transmission contention. Optimizing power saving of multiple PSM clients is a challenging task, because each PSM client expects to complete data transmission early so that it can turn to low power mode. In this paper, we define an energy conserving model to describe the general PSM traffic contention problem. We prove that the optimization of energy saving for multiple PSM clients under constraint is an NPcomplete problem. Following this direction, we propose a solution called harmonious power saving mechanism (HPSM) to address one specific case, in which multiple PSM clients associate to a single AP. In HPSM, we first use a basic sociological concept to define the richness of a PSM client based on the link resource it consumes. Then, we separate these poor PSM clients from rich PSM clients in terms of link resource consumption and favor the former to save power when they face PSM transmission contention. We implement prototypes of HPSM based on the open source projects Mad-wifi and NS-2. Our evaluations show that HPSM can help the poor PSM clients effectively save power while only slightly degrading the rich PSM clients\u27 performance in comparison with the existing PSM solutions
Regional variation in NAFLD prevalence and risk factors among people living with HIV in Europe: a meta-analysis
Background and Aim: Europe faces an elevated risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) among people living with HIV (PLWH), contributing to the region’s highest global burden of NAFLD. However, the prevalence of NAFLD across various European countries and regions remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the prevalence and risk factors associated with NAFLD among PLWH across European countries. Methods: A systematic search was conducted across four databases: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library. Data on the prevalence of NAFLD, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and fibrosis, as well as the associated risk factors, were collected among PLWH in Europe. Results: Thirty-six studies from 13 European nations were included. The prevalence of NAFLD, NASH, and fibrosis were 42% (95%CI 37–48), 35% (95%CI 21–50) and 13% (95%CI 10–15), respectively. Male gender, BMI, waist circumference, Diabetes, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, dyslipidemia, triglycerides, HDL, LDL, ALT, AST, and years on antiretroviral therapy (ART) were found to be risk factors for NAFLD. High BMI and triglycerides were associated with NASH. Patients with high BMI and triglycerides are at increased risk of significant liver fibrosis. Conclusion: The high prevalence of NAFLD, NASH, and fibrosis among PLWH in Europe highlights the need for early screening, intervention, and increased research focus on adolescents living with HIV. Furthermore, the significant variations observed between countries and regions underscore the influence of related risk factors
Quantitative evaluation of gut microbiota composition in pancreatic cancer: a pooled study
Background:
Prior research has demonstrated a positive association between the composition of gut microbiota and the incidence of pancreatic cancer. Nevertheless, a thorough quantitative and systematic evaluation of the distinct properties of gut microbiota in individuals diagnosed with pancreatic cancer has yet to be conducted. The objective of this study is to examine alterations in the diversity of intestinal microbiota in individuals diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Methods:
Search for relevant literature published before July 2023 in 4 databases: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library, without any language restrictions.
Results:
A total of 12 studies were included, including 535 patients with pancreatic cancer and 677 healthy controls. Analysis was conducted on 6 phyla, 16 genera, and 6 species. The study found significant and distinctive changes in the α-diversity of gut microbiota, as well as in the relative abundance of multiple gut bacterial groups at the phylum, genus, and species levels in pancreatic cancer patients.
Conclusion:
Overall, there are certain characteristic changes in the gut microbiota of pancreatic cancer patients. However, further research is warranted to elucidate the specific mechanism of action and the potential for treatment
Effect of low-intensity transcranial ultrasound stimulation on theta and gamma oscillations in the mouse hippocampal CA1
Previous studies have demonstrated that low-intensity transcranial ultrasound stimulation (TUS) can eliminate hippocampal neural activity. However, until now, it has remained unclear how ultrasound modulates theta and gamma oscillations in the hippocampus under different behavioral states. In this study, we used ultrasound to stimulate the CA1 in mice in anesthesia, awake and running states, and we simultaneously recorded the local field potential of the stimulation location. We analyzed the power spectrum, phase-amplitude coupling (PAC) of theta and gamma oscillations, and their relationship with ultrasound intensity. The results showed that (i) TUS significantly enhanced the absolute power of theta and gamma oscillations under anesthesia and in the awake state. (ii) The PAC strength between theta and gamma oscillations is significantly enhanced under the anesthesia and awake states but is weakened under the running state with TUS. (iii) Under anesthesia, the relative power of theta decreases and that of gamma increases as ultrasound intensity increases, and the result under the awake state is opposite that under the anesthesia state. (iv) The PAC index between theta and gamma increases as ultrasound intensity increases under the anesthesia and awake states. The above results demonstrate that TUS can modulate theta and gamma oscillations in the CA1 and that the modulation effect depends on behavioral states. Our study provides guidance for the application of ultrasound in modulating hippocampal function
Complete Sequence of a F33:A-:B- Conjugative Plasmid Carrying the oqxAB, fosA3, and blaCTX-M-55 Elements from a Foodborne Escherichia coli Strain
This study reports the complete sequence of pE80, a conjugative IncFII plasmid recovered from an Escherichia coli strain isolated from chicken meat. This plasmid harbors multiple resistance determinants including oqxAB, fosA3, blaCTX-M-55, and blaTEM-1, and is a close variant of the recently reported p42-2 element, which was recovered from E. coli of veterinary source. Recovery of pE80 constitutes evidence that evolution or genetic re-arrangement of IncFII type plasmids residing in animal-borne organisms is an active event, which involves acquisition and integration of foreign resistance elements into the plasmid backbone. Dissemination of these plasmids may further compromise the effectiveness of current antimicrobial strategies.Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technolog
Implicit scene context-aware interactive trajectory prediction for autonomous driving
The accurate prediction of behaviors of surrounding traffic participants is critical for autonomous vehicles (AV). How to fully encode both explicit (e.g., map structure and road geometry) and implicit scene context information (e.g., traffic rules) within complex scenarios is still challenging. In this work, we propose an implicit scene context-aware trajectory prediction framework (the PRISC-Net, Prediction with Implicit Scene Context) for accurate and interactive behavior forecasting. The novelty of the proposed approach includes: 1) development of a behavior prediction framework that takes advantage of both model- and learning-based approaches to fully encode scene context information while modeling complex interactions; 2) development of a candidate path target predictor that utilizes explicit and implicit scene context information for candidate path target prediction, along with a motion planning-based generator that generates kinematic feasible candidate trajectories; 3) integration of the proposed target predictor and trajectory generator with a learning-based evaluator to capture complex agent-agent and agent-scene interactions and output accurate predictions. Experiment results based on vehicle behavior datasets and real-world road tests show that the proposed approaches outperform state-of-the-art methods in terms of prediction accuracy and scene context compliance
