    An investigation into the Gustafsson limit for small planar antennas using optimisation

    The fundamental limit for small antennas provides a guide to the effectiveness of designs. Gustafsson et al, Yaghjian et al, and Mohammadpour-Aghdam et al independently deduced a variation of the Chu-Harrington limit for planar antennas in different forms. Using a multi-parameter optimisation technique based on the ant colony algorithm, planar, meander dipole antenna designs were selected on the basis of lowest resonant frequency and maximum radiation efficiency. The optimal antenna designs across the spectrum from 570 to 1750 MHz occupying an area of 56mm×25mm56mm \times 25mm were compared with these limits calculated using the polarizability tensor. The results were compared with Sievenpiper's comparison of published planar antenna properties. The optimised antennas have greater than 90% polarizability compared to the containing conductive box in the range 0.3<ka<1.10.3<ka<1.1, so verifying the optimisation algorithm. The generalized absorption efficiency of the small meander line antennas is less than 50%, and results are the same for both PEC and copper designs.Comment: 6 pages, 10 figures, in press article.     Polarizablity of 2D and 3D conducting objects using method of moments

    Fundamental antenna limits of the gain-bandwidth product are derived from polarizability calculations. This electrostatic technique has significant value in many antenna evaluations. Polarizability is not available in closed form for most antenna shapes and no commercial electromagnetic packages have this facility. Numerical computation of the polarizability for arbitrary conducting bodies was undertaken using an unstructured triangular mesh over the surface of 2D and 3D objects. Numerical results compare favourably with analytical solutions and can be implemented efficiently for large structures of arbitrary shape.Comment: Peer-reviewed articl

    Voice processing abilities in children with autism, children with specific language impairments and young typically developing children

    It is well established that people with autism have impaired face processing, but much less is known about voice processing in autism. Four experiments were therefore carried out to assess (1) familiar voice-face and sound-object matching; (2) familiar voice recognition; (3) unfamiliar voice discrimination; and (4) vocal affect naming and vocal-facial affect matching. In Experiments 1 and 2 language-matched children with specific language impairment (SLI) were the controls. In Experiments 3 and 4 language-matched children with SLI and young mainstream children were the controls. The results were unexpected: the children with autism were not impaired relative to controls on Experiments 1, 2 and 3, and were superior to the children with SLI on both parts of Experiment 4, although impaired on affect matching relative to the mainstream children. These results are interpreted in terms of an unexpected impairment of voice processing in the children with SLI associated partly, but not wholly, with an impairment of cross-modal processing. Performance on the experimental tasks was not associated with verbal or nonverbal ability in either of the clinical groups. The implications of these findings for understanding autism and SLI are discussed

    Proposal for demonstrating the Hong-Ou-Mandel effect with matter waves

    The Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) effect is a striking demonstration of destructive quantum interference between pairs of indistinguishable bosons, realised so far only with massless photons. Here we propose an experiment which can realise this effect in the matter-wave regime using pair-correlated atoms produced via a collision of two Bose-Einstein condensates and subjected to two laser induced Bragg pulses. We formulate a novel measurement protocol appropriate for the multimode matter-wave field, which---unlike the typical two-mode optical case---bypasses the need for repeated measurements under different displacement settings of the beam-splitter, thus dramatically reducing the number of experimental runs required to map out the interference visibility. The protocol can be utilised in related matter-wave schemes; here we focus on condensate collisions and by simulating the entire experiment we predict a HOM-dip visibility of ~69%. By being larger than 50%, such a visibility highlights strong quantum correlations between the atoms and paves the way for a possible demonstration of a Bell inequality violation with massive particles in a related Rarity-Tapster setup.Comment: Essentially the same version as v2, except in Nature Communications style; for Supplementary Information see the source fil

    Benchmark experiments with global climate models applicable to extra-solar gas giant planets in the shallow atmosphere approximation

    The growing field of exoplanetary atmospheric modelling has seen little work on standardised benchmark tests for its models, limiting understanding of the dependence of results on specific models and conditions. With spatially resolved observations as yet difficult to obtain, such a test is invaluable. Although an intercomparison test for models of tidally locked gas giant planets has previously been suggested and carried out, the data provided were limited in terms of comparability. Here, the shallow PUMA model is subjected to such a test, and detailed statistics produced to facilitate comparison, with both time means and the associated standard deviations displayed, removing the time dependence and providing a measure of the variability. Model runs have been analysed to determine the variability between resolutions, and the effect of resolution on the energy spectra studied. Superrotation is a robust and reproducible feature at all resolutions

    Microlensing in phase space II: Correlations analysis

    Applications of the phase space approach to the calculation of the microlensing autocorrelation function are presented. The continuous propagation equation for a random star field with a Gaussian velocity distribution is solved in the leading non-trivial approximation using the perturbation technique. It is shown that microlensing modulations can be important in the interpretation of optical and shorter-wavelength light curves of pulsars, power spectra of active galactic nuclei and coherence estimates for quasi-periodic oscillations of dwarf novae and low-mass X-ray binaries. Extra scatter in the brightness of type Ia supernovae due to gravitational microlensing is shown to be of order up to 0.2 stellar magnitudes depending on the extent of the light curves.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 17 pages, 8 figures.     Simultaneous muscle force and displacement transducer

    A myocardial transducer for simultaneously measuring force and displacement within a very small area of myocardium is disclosed. The transducer comprised of an elongated body forked at one end to form an inverted Y shaped beam with each branch of the beam constituting a low compliant tine for penetrating the myocardium to a predetermined depth. Bonded to one of the low compliance tines is a small piezoresistive element for converting a force acting on the beam into an electrical signal. A third high compliant tine of the transducer, which measures displacement of the myocardium in a direction in line with the two low compliant tines, is of a length that just pierces the surface membrane. A small piezoresistive element is bonded to the third tine at its upper end where its bending is greatest. Displacement of the myocardium causes a deformation in curvature of the third tine, and the second small piezoresistive element bonded to the surface of its curved end converts its deformation into an electrical signal
