Springtime Contribution of Dinitrogen Fixation to Primary Production Across the Mediterranean Sea
Dinitrogen (N-2) fixation rates were measured during early spring across the different provinces of Mediterranean Sea surface waters. N-2 fixation rates, measured using N-15(2) enriched seawater, were lowest in the eastern basin and increased westward with a maximum at the Strait of Gibraltar (0.10 to 2.35 nmol NL-1 d(-1), respectively). These rates were 3-7 fold higher than N-2 fixation rates measured previously in the Mediterranean Sea during summertime and we estimated that methodological differences alone did not account for the seasonal changes we observed. Higher contribution of N-2 fixation to primary production (4-8 %) was measured in the western basin compared to the eastern basin (similar to 2 %). Our data indicates that these differences between basins may be attributed to changes in N-2-fixing planktonic communities and that heterotrophic diazotrophy may play a significant role in the eastern Mediterranean while autotrophic diazotrophy has a more dominant role in the western basin

Analytic Narratives Revisited

The Analytic Narrative Project
In Analytic Narratives, we attempt to address several issues. First, many of us are engaged in in-depth case studies, but we also seek to contribute to, and to make use of, theory. How might we best proceed? Second, the historian, the anthropologist, and the area specialist possess knowledge of a place and time. They have an understanding of the particular. How might they best employ such data to create and test theories that may apply more generally? Third, what is the contribution of formal theory? What benefits are, or can be, secured by formalizing verbal accounts? In recent years, King, Keohane, and Verba (1994) and Green and Shapiro (1994) have provoked debate over these and related issues. In Analytic Narratives, we join in the methodological discussions spawned by their contributions
A Fred Friendly Roundtable
Taking a different approach from the other panels in the Court of Public Opinion Conference, participants in the roundtable role-played their way through a hypothetical (though familiar-sounding) legal issue involving alleged sexual assault by a student athlete, sensitive issues of race and class, and high profile media attention.
Moderator Jack Ford, a TV news veteran, assigns roles including defense attorney, District Attorney, reporter, and Chancellor to a large panel, and asks them to examine their various obligations and choices when faced with the unfolding controversy. Questions/themes/discussion topics When and how should university officials publicly address criminal investigations involving students? Do in-house investigations by universities of alleged criminal acts by students affect those students\u27 constitutional rights? How should university officials balance the rights of accused students with the safety of the rest of the student body?
