Dust emission by powder handling: Influence of the hopper outlet on the dust plume
Dust generation in solids handling involving free fall of bulk materials and impacts on a stockpile can cause many problems in industry and be a great danger for operators health. This paper describes an experimental set up to characterize the dust plume formed in free fall of powders from a hopper and investigates the influence of various outlet geometries on the dust plume. Evaluation of the Boeing PAN AIR technologies code (A502i) through prediction of separation forces on the GBU-24
The Boeing PAN AIR Technologies code (A502i) is investigated to explore its suitability for determination of separation forces on ordnance. To this end, A502i is first assessed by applying it to three problems for which other solutions and experimental data are available, i.e. steady flow past a rectangular, parabolic arc wing and a delta wing at both subsonic and supersonic conditions. Good agreement is found in all cases. A502i is then applied to the GBU-24's being in two configurations for a subsonic case and a supersonic case. Avian Conservation Practices Strengthen Ecosystem Services in California Vineyards
Insectivorous Western Bluebirds (Sialia mexicana) occupy vineyard nest boxes established by California winegrape growers who want to encourage avian conservation. Experimentally, the provision of available nest sites serves as an alternative to exclosure methods for isolating the potential ecosystem services provided by foraging birds. We compared the abundance and species richness of avian foragers and removal rates of sentinel prey in treatments with songbird nest boxes and controls without nest boxes. The average species richness of avian insectivores increased by over 50 percent compared to controls. Insectivorous bird density nearly quadrupled, primarily due to a tenfold increase in Western Bluebird abundance. In contrast, there was no significant difference in the abundance of omnivorous or granivorous bird species some of which opportunistically forage on grapes. In a sentinel prey experiment, 2.4 times more live beet armyworms (Spodoptera exigua) were removed in the nest box treatment than in the control. As an estimate of the maximum foraging services provided by insectivorous birds, we found that larval removal rates measured immediately below occupied boxes averaged 3.5 times greater than in the control. Consequently the presence of Western Bluebirds in vineyard nest boxes strengthened ecosystem services to winegrape growers, illustrating a benefit of agroecological conservation practices. Predator addition and sentinel prey experiments lack some disadvantages of predator exclusion experiments and were robust methodologies for detecting ecosystem services
The Reactor Antineutrino Anomaly
Recently new reactor antineutrino spectra have been provided for 235U, 239Pu,
241Pu and 238U, increasing the mean flux by about 3 percent. To good
approximation, this reevaluation applies to all reactor neutrino experiments.
The synthesis of published experiments at reactor-detector distances <100 m
leads to a ratio of observed event rate to predicted rate of 0.976(0.024). With
our new flux evaluation, this ratio shifts to 0.943(0.023), leading to a
deviation from unity at 98.6% C.L. which we call the reactor antineutrino
anomaly. The compatibility of our results with the existence of a fourth
non-standard neutrino state driving neutrino oscillations at short distances is
discussed. The combined analysis of reactor data, gallium solar neutrino
calibration experiments, and MiniBooNE-neutrino data disfavors the
no-oscillation hypothesis at 99.8% C.L. The oscillation parameters are such
that |Delta m_{new}^2|>1.5 eV^2 (95%) and sin^2(2\theta_{new})=0.14(0.08)

Improved modelling of helium and tritium production for spallation targets
Reliable predictions of light charged particle production in spallation
reactions are important to correctly assess gas production in spallation
targets. In particular, the helium production yield is important for assessing
damage in the window separating the accelerator vacuum from a spallation
target, and tritium is a major contributor to the target radioactivity. Up to
now, the models available in the MCNPX transport code, including the widely
used default option Bertini-Dresner and the INCL4.2-ABLA combination of models,
were not able to correctly predict light charged particle yields. The work done
recently on both the intranuclear cascade model INCL4, in which cluster
emission through a coalescence process has been introduced, and on the
de-excitation model ABLA allows correcting these deficiencies. This paper shows
that the coalescence emission plays an important role in the tritium and
production and that the combination of the newly developed versions of the
codes, INCL4.5-ABLA07, now lead to good predictions of both helium and tritium
cross sections over a wide incident energy range. Comparisons with other

Tendencias en el desarrollo temporal del mal del ciprés en parcelas permanentes de una reserva forestal nacional de Austrocedrus chilensis (Patagonia, Argentina)
Longevity is a characteristic of forest trees that influences their responses to challenges by biotic and abiotic stresses and the temporal development of symptoms. Monitoring programs have been extensively used to detect the impact of climatic change, air pollution and outbreaks of pathogens on forest health, growth and dynamics. In Argentina, forests of Patagonian cypress are affected since mid twenty century by a mortality process called «mal del ciprés» (cypress mortality), but information about their temporal progression is scarce. In the present work we used a database from a program of dasometric permanent plots to analyse the temporal development of cypress mortality on plot and tree level, and determine qualitatively the spatial distribution of affected trees. Particular pulses of appearance of affected trees shared by all plots, rapid or slow progress of mortality at tree level and a homogeneous distribution of affected trees without a clear pattern of expansion from a central point were determined. The results indicate that the episodic appearance of affected trees can be related with warm and dry climatic periods and suggest that the individuals affected by cypress mortality share some special characteristics such as genetic background, developmental conditions or physiological mechanisms for drought responses.La longevidad de las especies arbóreas afecta la respuesta a estreses bióticos o abióticos y, en gran medida, determina el desarrollo temporal de los síntomas. Por tal motivo, los programas de monitoreo se han empleado para detectar el impacto del cambio climático, la polución ambiental o estallidos de patógenos en la sanidad y dinámica de los bosques. En Argentina, los bosques de Austrocedrus chilensis sufren desde 1945 una mortalidad masiva conocida como «mal del ciprés»; sin embargo, hay escasa información sobre su progresión temporal. En el presente trabajo una base de datos de un programa de parcelas permanentes se empleó para analizar el desarrollo temporal de la mortalidad a nivel de parcela e individuo y la distribución espacial de los árboles afectados. Se determinó que la aparición de síntomas sigue un patrón de pulsos compartido por todas las parcelas, con mortalidad rápida o lenta a nivel de individuo y una distribución homogénea de la mortalidad sin un patrón de expansión desde un punto central.
