    Basics of Neutron Imaging

    Neutron imaging is established at many neutron sources around the world as a method for noninvasive investigations of samples and object on the macroscopic scale. Similarly to X-ray imaging, it provides the possibility to “look through” materials and allows one to “see” the inner, hidden content. However, owing to the complete different interaction mechanism, neutron imaging provides very different and complementary contrasts compared to X-rays, even if the image quality often is about the same. We report about the method’s principles, describe the state of the art, and give an outlook for new trends and developments

    Neutron radiography, tomography, and diffraction of commercial lithium-ion polymer batteries

    Imaging an intact, commercial battery as it cycles and wears is proved possible with neutron imaging. The wavelength range of imaging neutrons corresponds nicely with crystallographic dimensions of the electrochemically active species and the metal electrodes are relatively transparent. The time scale of charge/discharge cycling is well matched to dynamic tomography as performed with a golden ratio based projection angle ordering. The hydrogen content does create scatter which tends to blur internal structure. In this report, three neutron experiments will be described: 3D images of charged and discharged batteries were obtained with monochromatic neutrons at the FRM II reactor. 2D images (PSI) of fresh and worn batteries as a function of charge state may show a new wear pattern. In situ neutron diffraction (SNS) of the intact battery provides more information about the concentrations of electrochemical species within the battery as a function of charge state and wear. The combination of 2D imaging, 3D imaging, and diffraction data show how neutron imaging can contribute to battery development and wear monitoring. © 2013 The Authors. © 2013 The Authors

    Within-ring movement of free water in dehydrating Norway spruce sapwood visualized by neutron radiography

    This study is a first approach to visualize moisture distribution and movement between annual rings during sapwood drying by neutron imaging (NI). While Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] sapwood beams were allowed to dehydrate on a balance at ambient conditions, NI was performed in 1-10 min time steps. From NI raw files, radial dimensional changes were calculated during dehydration and transmission profiles were drawn for different relative moisture content (MC) steps from full saturation until equilibrium moisture content. The NI technique proved to be a useful tool to visualize the movement of free water within, and between, annual rings. Removal of free water in the middle part of the wood beam did not proceed continuously from the surface to the central part, but was strongly influenced by wood anatomy. Water is removed from earlywood during early stages of dehydration and later, at higher moisture loss (<50% MC), from the main latewood parts. It is therefore concluded that the radial dimensional changes measured at moderate moisture loss are not only caused by cell wall shrinkage of the outer wood parts located beneath the wood surface, but a result of elastic deformation of earlywood tracheids under the influence of negative hydrostatic pressure

    New insights into early bronze age damascene technique north of the alps

    Damascening, defined in this context as the inlay of one metal into a different metal base, is a rare decorative technique in the Early Bronze Age, known only from seven bronze artefacts found north of the Alps. This paper reports on the first thorough scientific examination of one such find, the axe from Thun-Renzenbühl grave no. 1. This interdisciplinary project involving several institutions in Germany and Switzerland investigated the axe by means of neutron radiographic imaging and X-ray microprobe methods, supported by microscopic examination. The result is an attempt to reconstruct the fabrication and decoration process and to reconsider the enigmatic question of the origins of the damascene technique north of the Alp

Remarkably, this is stable throughout the entire lifespan of the Republic and not just in the later years and despite the varying content of votes across the lifespan of the Republic, and (2) that nearly all parties were troubled by intra-party divisions, though, in particular, the national socialists and communists became homogeneous in the final years of the Republic.Zukunftskolleg, University of Konstan

    What traits are carried on mobile genetic elements, and why?

    Although similar to any other organism, prokaryotes can transfer genes vertically from mother cell to daughter cell, they can also exchange certain genes horizontally. Genes can move within and between genomes at fast rates because of mobile genetic elements (MGEs). Although mobile elements are fundamentally self-interested entities, and thus replicate for their own gain, they frequently carry genes beneficial for their hosts and/or the neighbours of their hosts. Many genes that are carried by mobile elements code for traits that are expressed outside of the cell. Such traits are involved in bacterial sociality, such as the production of public goods, which benefit a cell's neighbours, or the production of bacteriocins, which harm a cell's neighbours. In this study we review the patterns that are emerging in the types of genes carried by mobile elements, and discuss the evolutionary and ecological conditions under which mobile elements evolve to carry their peculiar mix of parasitic, beneficial and cooperative genes

    Molecular evolution of a gene cluster of serine proteases expressed in the Anopheles gambiae female reproductive tract

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Genes involved in post-mating processes of multiple mating organisms are known to evolve rapidly due to coevolution driven by sexual conflict among male-female interacting proteins. In the malaria mosquito <it>Anopheles gambiae </it>- a monandrous species in which sexual conflict is expected to be absent or minimal - recent data strongly suggest that proteolytic enzymes specifically expressed in the female lower reproductive tissues are involved in the processing of male products transferred to females during mating. In order to better understand the role of selective forces underlying the evolution of proteins involved in post-mating responses, we analysed a cluster of genes encoding for three serine proteases that are down-regulated after mating, two of which specifically expressed in the atrium and one in the spermatheca of <it>A. gambiae </it>females.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The analysis of polymorphisms and divergence of these female-expressed proteases in closely related species of the <it>A. gambiae </it>complex revealed a high level of replacement polymorphisms consistent with relaxed evolutionary constraints of duplicated genes, allowing to rapidly fix novel replacements to perform new or more specific functions. Adaptive evolution was detected in several codons of the 3 genes and hints of episodic selection were also found. In addition, the structural modelling of these proteases highlighted some important differences in their substrate specificity, and provided evidence that a number of sites evolving under selective pressures lie relatively close to the catalytic triad and/or on the edge of the specificity pocket, known to be involved in substrate recognition or binding. The observed patterns suggest that these proteases may interact with factors transferred by males during mating (e.g. substrates, inhibitors or pathogens) and that they may have differently evolved in independent <it>A. gambiae </it>lineages.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our results - also examined in light of constraints in the application of selection-inference methods to the closely related species of the <it>A. gambiae </it>complex - reveal an unexpectedly intricate evolutionary scenario. Further experimental analyses are needed to investigate the biological functions of these genes in order to better interpret their molecular evolution and to assess whether they represent possible targets for limiting the fertility of <it>Anopheles </it>mosquitoes in malaria vector control strategies.</p

    Neutron Imaging Facilities in a Global Context

    Neutron Imaging (NI) has been developed in the last decades from a film-based inspection method for non-destructive observations towards a powerful research tool with many new and competitive methods. The most important technical step forward has been the introduction and optimization of digital imaging detection systems. In this way, direct quantification of the transmission process became possible—the basis for all advanced methods like tomography, phase-contrast imaging and neutron microscopy. Neutron imaging facilities need to be installed at powerful neutron sources (reactors, spallation sources, other accelerator driven systems). High neutron intensity can be used best for either highest spatial, temporal resolution or best image quality. Since the number of such strong sources is decreasing world-wide due to the age of the reactors, the number of NI facilities is limited. There are a few installations with pioneering new concepts and versatile options on the one hand, but also relatively new sources with only limited performance thus far. It will be a challenge to couple the two parts of the community with the aim to install state-of-the-art equipment at the suitable beam ports and develop NI further towards a general research tool. In addition, sources with lower intensity should be equipped with modern installations in order to perform practical work best
