    The vibrational predissociation spectroscopy of hydrogen cluster ions

    The first infrared spectra of protonated hydrogen clusters in the gas phase have been observed. Predissociation spectra were taken with a tandem mass spectrometer: mass selected hydrogen cluster ions were irradiated inside a rf ion trap by a tunable infrared laser, and the fragment ions created by photodissociation of the clusters were mass selected and detected. Spectra for each product channel were measured by counting fragment ions as a function of laser frequency. Low resolution spectra (Deltanu=10 cm^−1) in the region from 3800 to 4200 cm^−1 were observed for the ions H + 5, H + 7, and H + 9 at 3910, 3980, and 4020 cm−1, respectively. A band was also observed for H + 5 at 3532 cm^−1. No rotational structure was resolved. The frequencies of the band maxima agree well with the frequencies predicted by previous ab initio calculations for the highest modes

    A telescope housed in a tunnel laboratory has an overburden of 573 hg cm(-2) and is located under the center of a saddle-shaped landscape. It is composed of triple layers of proportional counters, each layer of area approx. 4m x 2m and their separation 0.5m. Events are selected by triple coincidence and software track identification. The telescope is in operation for over a year and the overall count rate is 1280 hr(-1). The structure and operation of the system is reported

    On the "Poisson Trick" and its Extensions for Fitting Multinomial Regression Models

    This article is concerned with the fitting of multinomial regression models using the so-called "Poisson Trick". The work is motivated by Chen & Kuo (2001) and Malchow-M{\o}ller & Svarer (2003) which have been criticized for being computationally inefficient and sometimes producing nonsense results. We first discuss the case of independent data and offer a parsimonious fitting strategy when all covariates are categorical. We then propose a new approach for modelling correlated responses based on an extension of the Gamma-Poisson model, where the likelihood can be expressed in closed-form. The parameters are estimated via an Expectation/Conditional Maximization (ECM) algorithm, which can be implemented using functions for fitting generalized linear models readily available in standard statistical software packages. Compared to existing methods, our approach avoids the need to approximate the intractable integrals and thus the inference is exact with respect to the approximating Gamma-Poisson model. The proposed method is illustrated via a reanalysis of the yogurt data discussed by Chen & Kuo (2001)
