    Visibility and the Policing of Public Space

    From studies of ‘panoptic’ CCTV surveillance to accounts of undercover police officers, it is often mooted that visibility and invisibility are central to the policing of public space. However, there has been no comprehensive and critical assessment of this axiom. Drawing on the practices of a variety of policing providers and regulators, and the work of geographers, criminologists and other social scientists, this paper examines how and why visibility underpins the policing of public space. We begin by considering the ways in which policing bodies and technologies seek to render themselves selectively visible and invisible in the landscape. The paper then moves on to explore the ways in which policing agents attempt to make ‘incongruous’ bodies, behaviours and signs variously visible and invisible in public space. We then offer a sympathetic critique of these accounts, arguing that more attention is needed in understanding: (i) how other senses such as touch, smell and sound are socially constructed as in and out-of-place and ‘policed’ accordingly; and (ii) how the policing of undesirable bodies and practices is not simply about quantitative crime reduction, but conducted through qualitative, embodied performance.     Platforms, sex work and their interconnectedness

    This article examines the interconnectedness of sex work with the platform economy. It does this by mobilizing two concepts from the platform economy literature: the platform stack (which captures the structure of platforms) and interpenetration (which describes the processes through which platforms intersect). Exploring these concepts, the article draws on a dataset of linked platforms used by 54 cam workers and documented observations of 55 different platforms. These platforms include those designed for sex workers as well as those with a more generalist function. In mapping this platform ecology, the article highlights some of the opportunities, barriers and risks that platform interpenetration presents for sex workers

    Biomarkers of oxidant stress, insulin sensitivity and endothelial activation in rheumatoid arthritis: a cross-sectional study of their association with accelerated atherosclerosis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Women with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have increased morbidity and mortality due to coronary heart disease. Chronic systemic inflammation is known to accelerate atherosclerosis and increase arterial stiffness in patients, but other mechanisms may also be involved. Biomarkers of oxidant stress, inflammation, insulinaemia and endothelial dysfunction were measured in blood and urine from 46 RA patients and 48 age-matched controls. Plaque formation and intima-medial thickness (IMT) were measured using B-mode carotid Doppler scan.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>The prevalence of plaque was increased (p = 0.042) in RA patients between 50–59 years old compared to the same age group in controls. 8-isoprostane (p = 0.004), C-reactive protein (p < 0.001), interleukin-6 (p < 0.001), insulin (p = 0.035), adiponectin (p = 0.012), vascular cell adhesion molecule (VCAM) (p = 0.029) and E-selectin (p < 0.001) were all increased while selenium (p = 0.003) and LDL-cholesterol (p = 0.025) were both decreased in all RA patients. 8-isoprostane correlated with 10 year cardiac risk (r = 0.55, p < 0.001), VCAM with IMT (r = 0.37, p = 0.012) and E-selectin with rheumatoid factor titre (r = 0.43, p = 0.003) in RA patients. In the control group, age, carotid IMT, VCAM, systolic blood pressure and smoking status were all associated with plaque development whereas in RA patients only age was associated with plaque.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The burden of atherosclerosis is particularly increased in middle-aged women with RA. Patients with RA have increased levels of oxidant stress, inflammation, insulin and soluble adhesion molecules. As the association between classical risk factors was much weaker in RA patients compared to controls, these additional factors may be more important in the accelerated development of atheroma in RA.</p

    "Maybe I’m a quiet activist": sex work scholars and negotiations of ‘minor’ academic-activism

    With the intensification of calls for social ‘impact’ from research, there is renewed emphasis on academic-activism as a means to realize social change. But what ‘counts’ as activism in these visions of academic-activist impact? Drawing on interviews with sex work scholars in the United Kingdom and Aotearoa New Zealand, we examine the borders—and the disruption of borders—between ‘traditional’ forms of activism and a wider array of more ‘minor’ practices frequently perceived as too ‘ordinary’ to claim that label. In doing this, we explore quiet, implicit and everyday forms of activism, arguing that activism is embodied, frequently undertaken by those who do not self-identify as activists, and sits ambivalently within broader institutional drives for research-based ‘impact’

    Mesenchymal stem cells inhibit T-cell function through conserved induction of cellular stress

    The physiological role of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) is to provide a source of cells to replace mesenchymal-derivatives in stromal tissues with high cell turnover or following stromal tissue damage to elicit repair. Human MSCs have been shown to suppress in vitro T-cell responses via a number of mechanisms including indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO). This immunomodulatory capacity is likely to be related to their in vivo function in tissue repair where local, transient suppression of immune responses would benefit differentiation. Further understanding of the impact of locally modulated immune responses by MSCs is hampered by evidence that IDO is not produced or utilized by mouse MSCs. In this study, we demonstrate that IDO-mediated tryptophan starvation triggered by human MSCs inhibits T-cell activation and proliferation through induction of cellular stress. Significantly, we show that despite utilizing different means, immunomodulation of murine T-cells also involves cellular stress and thus is a common strategy of immunoregulation conserved between mouse and humans.</div
