    Confrontation of viewpoints in a concurrent engineering process

    We present an empirical study aimed at analysing the use of viewpoints in an industrial Concurrent Engineering context. Our focus is on the viewpoints expressed in the argumentative process taking place in evaluation meetings. Our results show that arguments enabling a viewpoint or proposal to be defended are often characterized by the use of constraints. One result involved the way in which the proposals for solutions are assessed during these meetings. We have revealed the existence of specific assessment modes in these meetings as well as their combination. Then, we show that, even if some constraints are apparently identically used by the different specialists involved in meetings, various meanings and weightings are associated with these constraints by these different specialists

    Die Kostenanalyse zur Bestimmung des Einflusses der Kapazitätsgröße und -auslastung auf den Kostenverlauf von Hilfskostenstellen (Hilfsabteilungen) erfolgt mit Hilfe von Modellkalkulationen. Eine spezielle Form der Teilkostenrechnung ermöglicht die Zurechnung der Kosten nach Kostenkategorien (jahresfix, tagesfix, ggf. chargenfix und mengenproportional) auf die entsprechenden Kostenträger (z. B. Kälte, Dampf) der jeweiligen Hilfskostenstelle. Durch computergestützte Simulationen können die Auswirkungen der verschiedenen Kosteneinflußfaktoren im einzelnen quantifiziert werden

    Cognitive bearing of techno-advances in Kashmiri carpet designing

    The design process in Kashmiri carpet weaving is a distributed process encompassing a number of actors and artifacts. These include a designer called naqash who creates the design on graphs, and a coder called talim-guru who encodes that design in a specific notation called talim which is deciphered and interpreted by the weavers to weave the design. The technological interventions over the years have influenced these artifacts considerably and triggered major changes in the practice, from heralding profound cognitive accomplishments in manually driven design process causing major alterations in the overall structure of the practice. The recent intervention is by the digital technology: on the one hand, it has brought precision and speedy processing in the design process, and on the other, it has eliminated some of the crucial actors from the practice. This paper, which forms part of a larger study on the situated and distributed cognitive process in Kashmiri carpet-weaving practice, describes the technological makeover of the design artifacts involved in this practice over the years and their resultant cognitive impact on the design process as well as on the practice

    Substructure damage identification based on wavelet-domain response reconstruction

    This article presents experimental verification on damage identification of a substructure using a wavelet-domain response reconstruction technique. The response reconstruction is based on the unit impulse response function in the wavelet domain to form a transformation matrix between two different sets of time-domain response vectors. The initial finite element model updating is performed to achieve an accurate model in the intact stage as a baseline, and measuredacceleration responses from the damaged substructure are used for the damage identification. Substructure damage identification is conducted by minimizing the discrepancy between a measured response vector and the reconstructed one. A dynamic response sensitivity-based model updating method is used for the identification of the target substructure. Local damage is identified as a change in the elemental stiffness factors. The adaptive Tikhonov regularization technique is adopted to improve the identification results with measured responses including measurement and environmental noises in laboratory. Experimental studies on a 7-storey plane frame structure are conducted to investigate the accuracy of the presented response reconstruction technique and the performance of substructure damage identification approach. Good response reconstruction accuracy is obtained with the baseline model, and the introduceddamages in the substructure can be identified effectively. The damage locations are identified correctly with a close estimation of damage extents

    Matrices or network diagrams: which visual representation is better for visualising connectivity models?

    Adjacency matrices or DSMs (design structure matrices) and node-link diagrams are both visual representations of graphs, which are a common form of data in many disciplines. DSMs are used throughout the engineering community for various applications, such as process modelling or change prediction. However, outside this community, DSMs (and other matrix-based representations of graphs) are rarely applied and node-link diagrams are very popular. This paper will examine, which representation is more suitable for visualising graphs. For this purpose, several user experiments were conducted that aimed to answer this research question in the context of product models used, for example in engineering, but the results can be generalised to other applications. These experiments identify key factors on the readability of graph visualisations and confirm work on comparisons of different representations. This study widens the scope of readability comparisons between node-link and matrix-based representations by introducing new user tasks and replacing simulated, undirected graphs with directed ones employing real-world semantics
