Examining Literacy Specialist Candidates’ Self-Efficacy Beliefs in Leadership Competencies Before and After Internships in Schools
The purpose of this study was to examine differences in the self-efficacy beliefs of 25 literacy specialist candidates in three key leadership areas before and after 15-week internships in schools. The three leadership areas, identified by university faculty as important to the leadership role of literacy specialists in schools today, are: 1) serving as a resource to classroom teachers, administrators, and parents; 2) conducting staff development; and 3) engaging in literacy program development and coordination. Paired-sample t-tests used to evaluate pre/post-survey scores at the end of the 15 weeks suggest self-efficacy beliefs in all three categories grew significantly over the course of the internships. Using Bandura’s framework and the leadership competencies to code and analyze interviews, electronic communications, and reflective papers, the author shares examples of how candidates at the top and bottom of the group in self-efficacy growth compared in interpreting self-efficacy related information during the course of the internships. The FERRUM project: Experimental lifetimes and transition probabilities from highly excited even 4d levels in Fe ii
We report lifetime measurements of the 6 levels in the 3d6(5D)4d e6G term in
Fe ii at an energy of 10.4 eV, and f -values for 14 transitions from the
investigated levels. The lifetimes were measured using time-resolved
laser-induced fluorescence on ions in a laser-produced plasma. The high
excitation energy, and the fact that the levels have the same parity as the the
low-lying states directly populated in the plasma, necessitated the use of a
two-photon excitation scheme. The probability for this process is greatly
enhanced by the presence of the 3d6(5D)4p z6F levels at roughly half the energy
difference. The f -values are obtained by combining the experimental lifetimes
with branching fractions derived using relative intensities from a hollow
cathode discharge lamp recorded with a Fourier transform spectrometer. The data
is important for benchmarking atomic calculations of astrophysically important
quantities and useful for spectroscopy of hot stars.Comment: A&A, accepte
Initial experiments concerning quantum information processing in rare-earth-ion doped crystals
In this paper initial experiments towards constructing simple quantum gates
in a solid state material are presented. Instead of using specially tailored
materials, the aim is to select a subset of randomly distributed ions in the
material, which have the interaction necessary to control each other and
therefore can be used to do quantum logic operations. The experimental results
demonstrate that part of an inhomogeneously broadened absorption line can be
selected as a qubit and that a subset of ions in the material can control the
resonance frequency of other ions. This opens the way for the construction of
quantum gates in rare-earth-ion doped crystals.Comment: 24 pages, including 12 figure
Mesoscopic Thermovoltage Measurement Design
Quantitative thermoelectric measurements in the mesoscopic regime require
accurate knowledge of temperature, thermovoltage, and device energy scales. We
consider the effect of a finite load resistance on thermovoltage measurements
of InAs/InP heterostructure nanowires. Load resistance and ac attenuation
distort the measured thermovoltage therefore complicating the evaluation of
device performance. Understanding these effects improves experimental design

New Forms of Metropolitan Developments: Stockholm in the 20-th century
The main conclusion of this article is that we in many respects can observe new tendencies in the development of Stockholm from the 1970s and on. The population growth rate has for instance been high compared to other Swedish cities, and that was not the case previously. Economic and other activities have been concentrated to the inner city, which consequently has been the most dynamic part of the entire metropolitan region. Social segregation has increased and also got an ethnical dimension. One basic factor behind these new traits is supposed to be the turn from industrialism to post-industrialism
Redshift constraints for RGB 0136+391 and PKS 0735+178 from deep optical imaging
We present the results of deep I-band imaging of two BL Lacerate objects, RGB
0136+391 and PKS 0735+178, during an epoch when the optical nucleus was in a
faint state in both targets. In PKS 0735+178 we find a significant excess over
a point source, which, if fitted by the de Vaucouleurs model, corresponds to a
galaxy with I = 18.64 +- 0.11 and r_eff = 1.8 +- 0.4 arcsec. Interpreting this
galaxy as the host galaxy of PKS 0735+178 we derive z = 0.45 +- 0.06 using the
host galaxy as a "standard candle". We also discuss the immediate optical
environment of PKS 0735+178 and the identity of the MgII absorber at z = 0.424.
Despite of the optimally chosen epoch and deep imaging we find the surface
brightness profile of RGB 0136+391 to be consistent with a point source. By
determining a lower limit for the host galaxy brightness by simulations, we
