Quality Upgrading, Skill Demand and International Trade: The Case of German Manufacturing

    Get PDF
The present paper contributes to the ongoing debate about how international trade can affect the demand for skills in industrial countries by estimating the impact of quality competition on the relative demand for low skilled workers in German manufacturing between 1995 and 2004. Results reveal a statistically significant negative effect albeit relatively small in size with quality competition accounting for approximately 5% of the overall decline in low skilled workers\u27 wage bill share. This effect entirely stems from quality competition with other advanced countries. The influence of trade in different qualities with newly industrializing economies is negligible

Magnetic field compensation coil design for magnetoencephalography

While optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) can be attached to the head of a person and allow for highly sensitive recordings of the human magnetoencephalogram (MEG), they are mostly limited to an operational range of approximately 5 nT. Consequently, even inside a magnetically shielded room (MSR), movements in the remnant magnetic field disable the OPMs. Active suppression of the remnant field utilizing compensation coils is therefore essential. We propose 8 compensation coils on 5 sides of a cube with a side length of approximately 2 m which were optimized for operation inside an MSR. Compared to previously built bi-planar compensation coils, the coils proposed in this report are more complex in geometry and achieved smaller errors for simulated compensation fields. The proposed coils will allow for larger head movements or smaller movement artifacts in future MEG experiments compared to existing coils

Recoverable Robust Knapsacks: the Discrete Scenario Case

Admission control problems have been studied extensively in the past. In a typical setting, resources like bandwidth have to be distributed to the different customers according to their demands maximizing the profit of the company. Yet, in real-world applications those demands are deviating and in order to satisfy their service requirements often a robust approach is chosen wasting benefits for the company. Our model overcomes this problem by allowing a limited recovery of a previously fixed assignment as soon as the data are known by violating at most k service promises and serving up to l new customers. Applying this approaches to the call admission problem on a single link of a telecommunication network leads to a recoverable robust version of the knapsack problem

Laser-Supported CD133+ Cell Therapy in Patients with Ischemic Cardiomyopathy: Initial Results from a Prospective Phase I Multicenter Trial

Objectives: This study evaluates the safety, principal feasibility and restoration potential of laser-supported CD133+ intramyocardial cell transplantation in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy. Methods: Forty-two patients with severe ischemic cardiomyopathy (left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) >15% and 3 myocardial segments) determined in the preoperative MRI was inversely correlated with a LVEF increase after laser-supported cell therapy (p = 0.024). Conclusions: This multicenter trial demonstrates that laser-supported CD133+ cell transplantation is safe and feasible in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy undergoing CABG, and in most cases, it appears to significantly improve the myocardial function. Importantly, our data show that the beneficial effect was significantly related to the extent of transmural delayed enhancement, suggesting that MRI-guided selection of patients is mandatory to ensure the effectiveness of the therapy.
