DergiPark: 379031tmsjAims: The purpose of this study is to measure and assess the depression and anxiety levels among the students at Fırat University Faculty of Medicine. Methods: This questionnaire study was performed on the students at Fırat University Faculty of Medicine between December 2014 and May 2015. It was carried out on a number of 299 undergraduate students under supervision. In this study, Beck Depression Inventory and Beck Anxiety Inventory were used. In statistical analyses, chi-square and independent t tests were applied for categorical and continuous data, respectively, with p lt; 0.05 being considered as significant. Results: Among those who were enrolled in the study, 25.5% were at the 1 graders, 12.4% were at the 2graders, 16.4% were at the 3rd graders, 18.1% were at the 4th graders, 18.1% were at the 5th graders and 9.4% were at the 6th graders. 6th graders showed significantly lower mean scores for Beck depression inventory as compared to 1st and 5th graders (p=0.007 and p=0.015, respectively). 1st graders had significantly the highest mean score of Beck anxiety among others (p=0.016, p=0.001, p lt;0.001, p=0.031 and p lt;0.001 respectively). 81.6% of undergraduate students reported to have been studying at the faculty of medicine by voluntarily. This ratio was 85% for female, and 77.7% for male subjects with no significant difference between the groups (p=0.104). 54.4% of female and 41.7% of male subjects were living with their family (p=0.026). Among all the undergraduate students enrolled in this study, 11.4% failed the class at least once during their academic calendar. However, this ratio was significantly less among female subjects (6.2% vs. 17.3%, p=0.003). Conclusion: No significant difference was found between those with and without failure at class, those coming up voluntarily and involuntarily, and those living with and without their parents in terms of Beck A and D score

Fetal Adrenal Suppression Due to Maternal Corticosteroid Use: Case Report

During pregnancy, steroids are usually used in maternal diseases such as adrenal failure or other autoimmune diseases, e.g. idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), Crohn’s disease, systemic lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, scleroderma, Addison’s disease and hyperemesis gravidarum, HELLP syndrome. Endogenous or exogenous maternal steroids are metabolized by the placental enzyme 11 beta-hydroxy steroid dehydrogenase type 2. Prednisolone and methylprednisolone are highly sensitive to this enzyme, while dexamethasone and betamethasone are less well metabolized. Steroids which can cross the placental barrier are administered in cases like fetal lupus, congenital adrenal hyperplasia and for enhancement of fetal lung maturation, whereas steroids used in maternal diseases are usually the ones with low affinity to the placenta; however, in case of long-term use or in high doses, placental enzyme saturation occurs and thus, resulting in fetal adrenal suppression. Antenatal steroids can lead to low birth weight, as observed in our patient. Here, we report a case with fetal adrenal suppression due to maternal methylprednisolone use presenting with early hypoglycaemia and late hyponatremia in neonatal period and requiring three-month replacement therapy

YÖK Tez No: 621659Bu araştırma hemşirelerin göğüs tüpü bulunan hastaların bakımına ilişkin bilgi düzeylerini belirlemek amacıyla tanımlayıcı olarak yapıldı. This study was conducted as a descriptive study in order to determine the nurses' knowledge about the care of patients with chest tubes. The power of the study was calculated as 100% with 152 nurses and 5 % error level, taking into account the knowledge level of the nurses. The research data were collected by face to face interview method using a questionnaire consisting of two sections titled "Introductory Characteristics of Nurses" and "Knowledge of Nurses on Patient Care with Chest Tube" (ANNEX-1) and a total of 64 questions. Descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation, median, number, percentage, etc.) were calculated in the evaluation of the data and were performed using the IBM SPSS v22 program. For quantitative variables; Kolmogrov Smirnov test, Box-line graphs, t-test, Mann Whitney U test, one way analysis of variance, Tukey test, Kruskal Wallis test, Dun-Bonferroni test were used. Significance level was accepted as p <0.05. Nurses, on average over 100 points; It was 45.34 points for the questions about the insertion and follow-up of the chest tube, 48.16 points for the questions about complications, 59.14 points for the questions about nursing care, and 51.69 the sum of all questions. According to the answers of the nurses, there was a lack of information about the patient's mobilization, dressing of the incision site, keeping the patient mobile, clamping the tube and complications that might develop in the patient. A standardized procedure for the care of patients with chest tubes is recommended in order to provide more holistic nursing care to the patient for the identified deficiencies
