    The central focus of this paper is the relationship between humans and animals and the way in which it is governed by a system of binary opposition. The idea that humans are fundamentally different from and superior to animals has a philosophical history dating back to René Descartes and the Judeo-Christian Bible. As an alternative to binary opposition a new way of thinking can be called “categorical blurring”, which involves removing the focus on overarching categories to emphasize that identity is created in relation to other creatures and not in opposition to them. I utilize categorical blurring as a methodological approach for creating paintings as a way to express that humans are tangled up with animals in a relation that is mutual and co-constitutive. Animal body parts spill over into human body parts in these paintings, signaling that there is no human without the animal, no animal without the human

    Concrete with supplementary cementitious materials

    This volume contains the proceedings of the MSSCE 2016 conference segment on “Concrete with Supplementary Cementitious Materials” (SCM). The conference segment is organized by the RILEM technical committee TC 238-SCM: Hydration and microstructure of concrete with supplementary cementitious materials. TC 238-SCM started activities in 2011 and has about 50 members from all over the world. The main objective of the committee is to support the increasing utilisation of hydraulic and pozzolanic industrial by-products, natural resources and societal waste to obtain more sustainable, less CO2-intensive binders for the construction industry. The TC serves as a knowledge platform where fundamental science and practical expertise are gathered to create a horizontal overview of the research area and to implement and promote the dissemination of more integrated generic approaches into the scientific community. One of the main challenges of the TC is to deal with SCM variability and binder diversification. The present conference segment deals with theory, modeling, and results from experimental investigations with relation to the use of SCMs in concrete. The topics covered include characterization of SCMs, SCM reactivity in blended cements, cement-SCM interaction, SCM-admixture interaction, hydration products, pore solution composition, effect of SCM on fresh concrete, hardened concrete with SCM, SCM influence on microstructure and durability of concrete with SCM. All these topics have relation to the aforementioned RILEM technical committee 238-SCM. The conference segment is attended by more than 40 presenters from university, industry and practice representing 30 different countries. Hopefully, it will contribute to synthesis of research on concrete with SCMs and promote knowledge transfer from academia to practice. All contributions have been peer reviewed

    Experimental study of tensile response of Strain Hardening UHPFRC at early age

    Strain Hardening Ultra High Performance Fibre Reinforced Concrete (SH-UHPFRC), has a high tensile strength (over 10 MPa) and exhibit significant strain hardening (several ‰) under tensile loads. These appealing features make it a suitable material for improving the efficiency and durability of new or existing structures. However, in rehabilitation works, when a layer of a new material is applied on an existing structure, due to restraints from the existing structure, the shrinkage deformations lead to high tensile stresses in the new layer, which can lead to premature cracking. To characterize the effect of the restraining conditions, experimental investigations of evolution of autogenous shrinkage and development of eigenstresses were done using a Temperature Stress Testing Machine (TSTM) at quasi-isothermal curing conditions at 20oC, from the time of casting. Tests were done at partial and full restraint conditions to study the development of the eigenstresses. The tests with 100% restraint are the first of their kind on SH-UHPFRC and the results show that under full restraint conditions, the material enters into the strain-hardening zone of the tensile response

    Influence of substrate and sand characteristics on Roman cement mortar performance

    When formulating repair mortars standard test specimens should be used with caution as these cannot be considered representative of samples of mortars collected on site. This work reports an approach to repair mortar formulation which takes into account the influence of porous substrates, sand characteristics and mortar thickness on the properties of both fresh and hardened Roman cement mortars. It is shown that mortars cast on a dry absorbent substrate show modified properties such as increased strength and decreased water absorption coefficient, the degree of which is a function of sand grading and surface characteristics, sample thickness and substrate sorptivity
