Understanding incentives for prefix aggregation in BGP

Proceeding of: ReArch'09, Proceedings of the 2009 workshop on Re-architecting the internet, (49-54), 1 December 2009, Rome, Italy.Over the last few years, a significant amount of the effort of the Future Internet architecture is devoted in order to improve the scalability of the next generation routing architecture. In this paper, we study providers’ incentives to perform prefix aggregation or deaggregation of non-customers routes. This is essentially a tradeoff between reduced router memory and reduced capacity of attracting customer traffic. We study the case where two ISPs compete for attracting traffic, by using game theory. In particular, we propose a game-theoretic model and we analyze the properties of the equilibrium. In a symmetric case, if a single Autonomous System (AS) is found to be deaggregating a given prefix, then all others will have the incentive to do the same, even if they end up with lower benefits. We find that pure equilibria do not always exist and we derive the conditions based on two model parameters. These findings suggest that BGP instability can be a common problem in a competitive scenario.European Community's Seventh Framework ProgramPublicad

The virtualization of small cells as envisaged by 5G, allows enhanced mobile edge computing capabilities, thus enabling network service deployment and management near the end user. This paper presents a cloud-enabled small cell architecture for 5G networks developed within the 5G-ESSENCE project. This paper also presents the conformity of the proposed architecture to the evolving 5G radio resource management architecture. Furthermore, it examines the inclusion of an edge enabler to support a variety of virtual network functions in 5G networks. Next, the improvement of specific key performance indicators in a public safety use case is evaluated. Finally, the performance of a 5G enabled evolved multimedia broadcast multicast services service is evaluated.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

C-V2X Communications for the Support of a Green Light Optimized Speed Advisory (GLOSA) Use Case, Journal of Telecommunications and Information Technology, 2021, nr 2

Rapid expansion of 5G affects a number of sectors, including vehicular communications relying on cooperative intelligent transportation systems (C-ITS). More specifically, in the context of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV), a particular emphasis is placed on modern cellular V2X (C-V2X) technologies aiming to further improve road safety. This work originates from the detailed scope of the ongoing 5G-DRIVE research project promoting cooperation between the EU and China, with the aim of demonstrating IoV services that rely on vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications. With the C-V2X approach serving as a point of departure, we analyze and describe a specific green light-optimized speed advisory (GLOSA) use case, for which we provide a detailed descriptive framework, a proposed architectural framework for trials, as well as specific KPIs for the joint assessment of trials between the EU and China. We also discuss the context for performance test procedures to be conducted as part of the intended trials. GLOSA provides end-users with short-term information on upcoming traffic light status to optimize traffic flows, help prevent speed limit violations, improve fuel efficiency, and reduce pollutio

Energy-aware cost prediction and pricing of virtual machines in cloud computing environments

With the increasing cost of electricity, Cloud providers consider energy consumption as one of the major cost factors to be maintained within their infrastructure. Consequently, various proactive and reactive management mechanisms are used to efficiently manage the cloud resources and reduce the energy consumption and cost. These mechanisms support energy-awareness at the level of Physical Machines (PM) as well as Virtual Machines (VM) to make corrective decisions. This paper introduces a novel Cloud system architecture that facilitates an energy aware and efficient cloud operation methodology and presents a cost prediction framework to estimate the total cost of VMs based on their resource usage and power consumption. The evaluation on a Cloud testbed show that the proposed energy-aware cost prediction framework is capable of predicting the workload, power consumption and estimating total cost of the VMs with good prediction accuracy for various Cloud application workload patterns. Furthermore, a set of energy-based pricing schemes are defined, intending to provide the necessary incentives to create an energy-efficient and economically sustainable ecosystem. Further evaluation results show that the adoption of energy-based pricing by cloud and application providers creates additional economic value to both under different market conditions

The network architecture evolution journey will carry on in the years ahead, driving a large scale adoption of 5th Generation (5G) and 5G-Advanced use cases with significantly decreased deployment and operational costs, and enabling new and innovative use-case-driven solutions towards 6th Generation (6G) with higher economic and societal values. The goal of this chapter, thus, is to present the envisioned societal impact, use cases and the End-to-End (E2E) 6G architecture. The E2E 6G architecture includes summarization of the various technical enablers as well as the system and functional views of the architecture

Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density

Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data
