The youth in Kaliningrad, Gdansk and Klaipeda: geopolitical vision of the world, identity and images of the other
This work juxtaposes the analysis of the federal discourse on the exclave position of the Kaliningrad region in 1994-2012 based on the screening by the Nezavisimaya gazeta and the results of surveys of students at the Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University and the Universities of Gdansk and Klaipeda using a similar questionnaire. Students of all three universities show latent dissatisfaction with employment prospects, which is manifested in the declared intention to emigrate. The orientation of young residents of Kaliningrad and their peers from Gdansk and Klaipeda towards prevailing connections with Europe is complicated by the uncertainty of the EU-Russia relations. Young residents of Gdansk and Klaipeda reproduce dated stereotypes, and their interest in the Kaliningrad region is limited. However, as the experience of the other countries suggests, local border traffic between the Kaliningrad region and the neighbouring Polish voivodeships can contribute to the improvement of mutual images. Long-lasting eforts to diversify cooperation and promote a positive image of Kaliningrad in the neighbouring Polish regions can prove worthwhile. Apart from the measures aimed at strengthening the region's economic base, it is necessary to increase the symbolic capital of Kaliningrad to achieve harmonious development of Kaliningrad identity
Nanomechanical morphology of amorphous, transition, and crystalline domains in phase change memory thin films
In the search for phase change materials (PCM) that may rival traditional
random access memory, a complete understanding of the amorphous to crystalline
phase transition is required. For the well-known Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) and GeTe (GT)
chalcogenides, which display nucleation and growth dominated crystallization
kinetics, respectively, this work explores the nanomechanical morphology of
amorphous and crystalline phases in 50 nm thin films. Subjecting these PCM
specimens to a lateral thermal gradient spanning the crystallization
temperature allows for a detailed morphological investigation. Surface and
depth-dependent analyses of the resulting amorphous, transition and crystalline
regions are achieved with shallow angle cross-sections, uniquely implemented
with beam exit Ar ion polishing. To resolve the distinct phases, ultrasonic
force microscopy (UFM) with simultaneous topography is implemented revealing a
relative stiffness contrast between the amorphous and crystalline phases of 14%
for the free film surface and 20% for the cross-sectioned surface. Nucleation
is observed to occur preferentially at the PCM-substrate and free film
interface for both GST and GT, while fine subsurface structures are found to be
sputtering direction dependent. Combining surface and cross-section
nanomechanical mapping in this manner allows 3D analysis of microstructure and
defects with nanoscale lateral and depth resolution, applicable to a wide range
of materials characterization studies where the detection of subtle variations
in elastic modulus or stiffness are required

A description of a system of programs for mathematically processing on unified series (YeS) computers photographic images of the Earth taken from spacecraft
A description of a batch of programs for the YeS-1040 computer combined into an automated system for processing photo (and video) images of the Earth's surface, taken from spacecraft, is presented. Individual programs with the detailed discussion of the algorithmic and programmatic facilities needed by the user are presented. The basic principles for assembling the system, and the control programs are included. The exchange format within whose framework the cataloging of any programs recommended for the system of processing will be activated in the future is displayed
Muons with E_th >= 1 Gev and Mass Composition in the Energy Range 10^{18}-10^{20} ev Observed by Yakutsk Eas Array
The ratio of the muon flux density to charged particle flux density at
distances of 300 and 600 m from the shower axis (\rhom(300)/\rhos(300) and
\rhom(600)/\rhos(600)) is measured. In addition, the energy dependence of
\rhom(1000) is analysed for showers with energies above eV. A
comparison between the experimental data and calculations performed with the
QGSJET model is given for the cases of primary proton, iron nucleus and gamma-
ray. We conclude that the showers with \E\ge3\times10^{18} eV can be formed
by light nuclei with a pronounced fraction of protons and helium nuclei. It is
not excluded however that a small part of showers with energies above
