    Position dependent velocity profiles in granular avalanches

    We present velocity profile measurements in granular avalanches flowing down a flat chute with wide rectangular cross section. The flow is recorded through a transparent side-wall by a high-speed camera, which is able to capture 1,825 pictures in a second. Due to the high frame rate of the camera, several flow features can be observed. Quantitative statements can be made by analysing the images with a pattern matching algorithm. This provides us with flow-normal velocity profiles with a very high temporal and spatial resolution. We find that even on flat surfaces, velocity profiles are strongly changing through the flow and for the range of investigated chute angles (from 26° to 36°) clear trends can be recognised. In the head of the avalanche the velocity is highest, decreasing continuously over the length of the avalanche. Thus, the investigated granular avalanches stretch through the flow. The experimental method allows us to study the evolution of characteristic flow properties such as depth averaged velocity, slip velocity, surface velocity, shear rates or flow depth.     Clinical relevance of molecular characteristics in Burkitt lymphoma differs according to age

    While survival has improved for Burkitt lymphoma patients, potential differences in outcome between pediatric and adult patients remain unclear. In both age groups, survival remains poor at relapse. Therefore, we conducted a comparative study in a large pediatric cohort, including 191 cases and 97 samples from adults. While TP53 and CCND3 mutation frequencies are not age related, samples from pediatric patients showed a higher frequency of mutations in ID3, DDX3X, ARID1A and SMARCA4, while several genes such as BCL2 and YY1AP1 are almost exclusively mutated in adult patients. An unbiased analysis reveals a transition of the mutational profile between 25 and 40 years of age. Survival analysis in the pediatric cohort confirms that TP53 mutations are significantly associated with higher incidence of relapse (25 ± 4% versus 6 ± 2%, p-value 0.0002). This identifies a promising molecular marker for relapse incidence in pediatric BL which will be used in future clinical trials

    DAPHNE: An Open and Extensible System Infrastructure for Integrated Data Analysis Pipelines

    Integrated data analysis (IDA) pipelines—that combine data management (DM) and query processing, high-performance computing (HPC), and machine learning (ML) training and scoring—become increasingly common in practice. Interestingly, systems of these areas share many compilation and runtime techniques, and the used—increasingly heterogeneous—hardware infrastructure converges as well. Yet, the programming paradigms, cluster resource management, data formats and representations, as well as execution strategies differ substantially. DAPHNE is an open and extensible system infrastructure for such IDA pipelines, including language abstractions, compilation and runtime techniques, multi-level scheduling, hardware (HW) accelerators, and computational storage for increasing productivity and eliminating unnecessary overheads. In this paper, we make a case for IDA pipelines, describe the overall DAPHNE system architecture, its key components, and the design of a vectorized execution engine for computational storage, HW accelerators, as well as local and distributed operations. Preliminary experiments that compare DAPHNE with MonetDB, Pandas, DuckDB, and TensorFlow show promising results

    Contrasting disease patterns in seropositive and seronegative neuromyelitis optica: A multicentre study of 175 patients

    BACKGROUND: The diagnostic and pathophysiological relevance of antibodies to aquaporin-4 (AQP4-Ab) in patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) has been intensively studied. However, little is known so far about the clinical impact of AQP4-Ab seropositivity. OBJECTIVE: To analyse systematically the clinical and paraclinical features associated with NMO spectrum disorders in Caucasians in a stratified fashion according to the patients' AQP4-Ab serostatus. METHODS: Retrospective study of 175 Caucasian patients (AQP4-Ab positive in 78.3%). RESULTS: Seropositive patients were found to be predominantly female (p 1 myelitis attacks in the first year were identified as possible predictors of a worse outcome. CONCLUSION: This study provides an overview of the clinical and paraclinical features of NMOSD in Caucasians and demonstrates a number of distinct disease characteristics in seropositive and seronegative patients

    This work aims to give an overview of wireless communication technologies (WCT) for underground applications. Difficulties regarding the harsh mining environment and operational constraints for WCT implementation and use are discussed. Selected technologies are then classified regarding underground mining-specific use cases in advanced mining operations. Use-case-based application categories such as ‘automation and teleoperation’, ‘tracking and tracing’ and ‘Long-Range Underground Monitoring (LUM)’ are defined. The use cases determine requirements for the operational suitability and also quantify evaluation criteria for the evaluation of WCT. The result is a comparison by category of the wireless technologies, which underlines potentials of different technologies for defined use cases, but it can be concluded that the technology always has to be evaluated within the use case and operational constraints

    This data set origins from the AFK (“Aufbereitung feinkörniger Komplexerze”, BMBF grant number 033R128) project. The main target within this project was to produce a cassiterite concentrate, which is suitable for the subsequent production of tin. Various processing steps and the material specific behaviour were investigated within the progress of the project. The present data set derives from dry magnetic separation tests.
