    Efficient Optical Modulation of Terahertz Transmission in Organic and Inorganic Semiconductor Hybrid System for Printed Terahertz Electronics and Photonics

    Highly efficient optical modulation of terahertz (THz) transmission through Si substrate coated with thin layer of organic π-conjugated materials was investigated under various laser light irradiation conditions using THz time-domain spectroscopy. As in the pioneering work by Yoo et al. [Yoo et al., Applied Physics Letters. 2013;103:151116-1–151116-3.], we also used copper phthalocyanine (CuPc). It was perceived that the charge carrier transfer from Si to CuPc is crucial for the photo-induced metallization and efficient optical modulation of THz transmission. We found that the thickness of CuPc layer is a critical parameter to realize high charge carrier density for efficient THz transmission modulation. We also fabricated a split-ring resonator (SRR) array metamaterial on CuPc-coated Si utilizing superfine inkjet printer and succeeded in obtaining efficient modulation of resonant responses of SRR array metamaterials by laser light irradiation. We have further investigated THz transmission modulation through Si substrates coated with another four solution-processable π-conjugated materials. Two of them are π-conjugated low molecules such as the [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) and 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl) pentacene (TIPS-pentacene), and another two are the π-conjugated polymer materials such as poly[5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-2-methoxycyanoterephthalyliden] (MEH-CN-PPV) and poly(benzimidazobenzophenanthroline) (BBL). Among these four π-conjugated materials, PCBM- and TIPS-pentacene showed better modulation efficiencies even higher than CuPc. Our findings may open the way to fabricating various types of THz active devices utilizing printing technologies

    Statistical Verification of Anomaly in Chiral Angle Distribution of Air-Suspended Carbon Nanotubes

    Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) have long attracted attention due to their distinct physical properties, depending on their chiral structures (chiralities). Clarifying their growth mechanism is important toward perfect chirality-controlled bulk synthesis. Although a correlation between the chirality distribution and the carbon atom configuration at an open tube edge has been predicted theoretically, lack of sufficient statistical data on metallic and semiconducting SWCNTs prohibited its verification. Here, we report statistical verification of the chirality distribution of 413 as-grown individual air-suspended SWCNTs with a length of over 20 μm using broadband Rayleigh spectroscopy. After excluding the impact of the difference in the number of possible SWCNT structures per chiral angle interval, the abundance profile with chiral angle exhibits an increasing trend with a distinct anomaly at a chiral angle of approximately 20°. These results are well explained considering the growth rate depending on armchair-shaped site configurations at the catalyst–nanotube interface

    Protein Transduction Method for Cerebrovascular Disorders

    Many studies have shown that a motif of 11 consecutive arginines (11R) is one of the most effective protein transduction domains (PTD) for introducing proteins into the cell membrane. By conjugating this &#34;11R&#34;, all sorts of proteins can effectively and harmlessly be transferred into any kind of cell. We therefore examined the transduction efficiency of 11R in cerebral arteries and obtained results showing that 11R fused enhanced green fluorescent protein (11R-EGFP) immediately and effectively penetrated all layers of the rat basilar artery (BA), especially the tunica media. This method provides a revolutionary approach to cerebral arteries and ours is the first study to demonstrate the successful transductionof a PTD fused protein into the cerebral arteries. In this review, we present an outline of our studies and other key studies related to cerebral vasospasm and 11R, problems to be overcome, and predictions regarding future use of the 11R protein transduction method for cerebral vasospasm (CV).</p

    本稿では,「長崎と天草地方の潜伏キリシタン関連遺産」における世界文化遺産への登録過程のうち,特にストーリーの再構築に焦点を当て,潜伏キリシタンを世界遺産化することの課題を空間の政治学の視点から検討した。「長崎の教会群とキリスト教関連遺産」からの転換において,構成資産を可能な限り維持しつつ,禁教期における潜伏キリシタンの信仰生活に焦点化したストーリーへの再構築が図られた。この変更は,世界遺産登録を目指す国・県が作成する世界遺産推薦書における価値の見直しという形で具現化した。ナショナル/リージョナルでのスケールでの資産への価値づけの言説は,必ずしもローカルアクターの想いを反映するものではなかったものの,世界遺産登録を目指す共犯関係が成立し,表立ったコンフリクトは生じていない。グローバル・ナショナル/リージョナル・ローカルという三者の空間的関係を信仰世界の理解という視点からみると,そこには近代知が生み出した学問的なカテゴリーによる信仰世界の解題という状況が生じていること,またツーリズムとの関係でいえば,この世界遺産をいかにして可視化し,それをいかに語るのかが大切であることが指摘された
