Projecting Galician Culture in English: Ethics and Strategies in the Anglophone Translation of Os libros arden mal

    Get PDF
[Abstracts] Translating literary texts imbued with cultural specificity into a language of unequal hegemonic status for new audiences is a complex task which calls for consciously selected approaches in order to succeed. With this in mind, this study examines the strategies employed in Books Burn Badly (2010), Jonathan Dunne’s English-language translation of Os libros arden mal (2006), a novel originally written in Galician by Manuel Rivas. Drawing on the functional translation theories of pertinent scholars in the field, including Nord, Schleiermacher, Venuti, and Vermeer, this paper assesses Dunne’s methods in terms of their fulfilment of the Skopos, namely their ability to amplify and make accessible Rivas’ work for an anglophone readership as well as preserve the Galician history and culture that underpin and permeate the original novel. With a view of ensuring the translation’s Skopos is met, a Mediated Heuristic Strategy is put forward, an alternative and supplementary framework informed by translation theories with culture at their core, including those of Appiah and Vidal Claramonte. This study explores the significance of translation choices and their perceived impact on anglophone readers’ interpretations, taking into account the contextual, ethical and practical questions surrounding the often-overlooked translation of minoritylanguage works into a hegemonic lingua franca. The subsequent conclusions drawn offer an insight into the key role translators play in transcending established norms and successfully articulating culturally entangled works. Not only does this paper seek to aid in the expansion of Galician literature and its representative authors, but it may also offer some insight for future translations from other minority languages.Traballo fin de mestrado (UDC.FIL). Just in Time, Quality Management, Supply Chain Management, and Business Performance: A Structural Analysis

    Get PDF
Just in time, quality management, and supply chain management are three philosophies firms have used to respond to competitive forces and enhance business performance. They are also complementary strategies that can be used as part of an integrated strategy to streamline material flows, reduce waste, and improve product quality, while satisfying market demands for shorter lead times, increased responsiveness, and lower cost. This study proposes and tests a structural equation model that relates just in time, quality management and supply chain management practices with a firm’s supplier management practices and identifies their relationships with business performance. Results indicate that while just in time, supply chain management, and quality management strategies are mutually supportive, quality management alone has a direct impact on business performance

Supply Chain Integration: Cluster Analysis of the Impact of Span of Integration

    Get PDF
Purpose This paper aims to explore whether firms that integrate only with partners adjacent to them in the supply chain exhibit different patterns of supply chain practice and performance than those that also integrate with partners more distant in the supply chain. Design/methodology/approach Cluster analysis of survey data is used to partition firms based on the span of the supply chain involved in their integration efforts. Findings Firms with a broad span of integration have a greater focus on alignment with suppliers and customers, and have more of a supply chain focus than those with a narrow span. They also demonstrate higher levels of performance attributable to supply chain relationships. Practical implications Results highlight the importance to supply chain professionals of taking a broad view of the supply chain rather than focusing only on first tier suppliers and customers. They also suggest the importance of exploring opportunities to facilitate broader participation in supply chain integration efforts. Originality/value Past research has identified the importance of supply chain integration without addressing the importance of how much of the supply chain should be involved in such efforts. This study provides empirical support for the need to involve partners across the supply chain

Three Essays on a Financial Crisis: A New Keynesian DSGE Approach with Financial Frictions

This thesis aims at enhancing our understanding of a financial crisis by using New Keynesian frameworks with financial frictions and applying Bayesian methods to the dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) models. First, we use a Gertler and Karadi (2011) type closed economy DSGE model to investigate a source and the transmission mechanism of a financial crisis. We show that a collapse in borrowers' net worth could lead to a real contraction by limiting the the bankers' credit supply to non-financial firms. In addition, our simulation indicates that the central bank's credit market intervention could be an effective tool in alleviating the financial crisis by restoring the private financial intermediation. Second, we simulate a sudden stop crisis in an emerging market economy by using a small open economy DSGE model with financial frictions. We show that foreign lenders' negative perception on an emerging market economy could actually lead to a recession via sudden stops in foreign capital inflow and the rise in cost of foreign borrowing. In addition, we establish that a sudden stop crisis could be aggravated by (i) the substantial degree of financial frictions in the economy, (ii) the heavy reliance on foreign resources in capital production, (iii) the choice of a fixed exchange rate regime, and so on. Finally, we estimate the above small open economy DSGE model by using the data from South Korea and the US. We obtain sizable and significant estimates for key parameters in the model, which support the theoretical arguments above empirically

Green supply chain management practices and performance

    Get PDF
Purpose – The purpose of this study is to examine the deployment of pro-active and re-active practices in the implementation of green supply chain management (GSCM) and analyze their impact on environmental, economic, and intangible performance by considering business strategy as organizational focus. Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected from a sample of 190 ISO 14001 certified manufacturing companies in Thailand and used to test the research hypotheses. Factor analysis was used to examine the construct validity while multivariate linear regression was used to test criteria validity. Findings – The threat of legislation and regulation (re-active practices) was a consideration that resulted in companies enhancing their environmental, economic, and intangible performance. Reverse logistics practices (pro-active practices) had low levels of adoption and do not have a significant impact on GSCM performance. Research limitations/implications – This study did not consider some aspects of organizational culture interaction between key customers and suppliers in the supply chain. Originality/value – The results of this study suggest that organizations need to be aware that pursuing a low-cost strategy may impact negatively on their ability to invest in GSCM

Problems and challenges : faced by Liberian refugee children and youths as they enter the formal educational systems at the Buduburam refugee camp in Ghana

This study addresses the challenges that Liberian refugee children and youths living at the Buduburam Refugee Camp face in accessing education. Over 40,000 Liberian refugees(adult and children)settle at the Buduburam Refugee camp in Ghana where the UNHCR and other relief agencies withdrew their educational suppport to the refugees in 2000. The UNHCR's three proposed solutions to the problem of refugees is viewed from different angles by the refugees thus providing room for their own arguments and preferment. This attitude has invariably an effect on the education system at the camp since administrators/teachers, parents and the children are involved. Amidst the quest for education by children, thousands of them at the Buduburam Refugee Camp are denied the opportunity of attending schools or prefer other means at their disposal rather than the classroom. In exploring on the educational challenges facing these children, a qualitative research design using Library Research and Documentation, Semi structure interviews and Observation was employed. There were two research questions and a total of 26 respondents including children, parents, camp leaders, educational consultants and humanitarian organizations participated in the study. From their responses and analysis of major themes and research findings, poverty (87%), the dreams of resettlement(77%), lack of motivation(46%) and social life at the camp(73%)are major setbacks for refugee children and youths not being able to access education at the Buduburam Refugee Camp in Ghana

    Neighborhood Pollution and Subjective Health

    Get PDF
In response to a call for more research documenting the association between pollution and subjective health, I use data collected by The Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) between 1990 and 2007 to explore the association between neighborhood pollution and subjective health. Using regression analysis, I find that both neighborhood and individual level characteristics contribute to an association between neighborhood pollution and subjective health. Statistically, I also explore gender as a possible modifier in the proposed association and find minimal statistical support. Possible explanations for this finding are discussed in the conclusions. This research gives insight into how pollution may be associated with an individual's well-being. An addition, conclusions expand the implications of my findings on environmental justice campaigns and public health concerns.Master of Art
